Student Feedback - Blackboard The first of the video lectures is posted and available. Please give me some feedback. Can you open and see it ok on your computer? What is your opinion of this type of instruction media compared to your other experiences with online courses. Thanks, Dr. Smith I really appreciate you taking the time to create video lectures; it seems like they will help to eliminate a lot of problems that typically arise in online courses. I was able to download and open the file without any issues. Please continue to do them! i feel like they help a lot of other students and not just me! thank you! This is very helpful to be able to see problems worked out and seeing them explained as if I was in an actual classroom. Thank you for your time you spent on this. You working out the parallel exercises are really helpful. Helps make the problems easier to understand. Thank you Please keep doing the videos, I know it is a lot of work on your end. All your work makes our physical science easier to understand! Thank you!! The video lectures are great! It's nice to have someone demonstrate how to do the problems rather than just reading and trying to figure it out. 50% of class gave feedback. 100% in favor of new format (video lecture).

Online vs. Blended Currently using Lecture Videos in Chemical Analysis, CHEM-3425, with a blended format. Only Juniors and Seniors Most commonly ranked at the most difficult course in the Chemistry major. Strong emphasis on critical thinking. All lectures on course material are delivered using video lectures. Meet on day per week for discussion, working problems, and assessment. Largest enrollment in 16 years!

Equipment Requirements Smart Board SMART Notebook software with video lecture installed Microphone to capture your voice Video convertor Prism Video File Convertor (~$40) Converts wmv video (Smart Board capture video) into Quicktime format (*.mov) Allows access from PC, Mac, Ipad, or Smart Phone

Procedure to make video Copy PowerPoint presentation (one page at a time) into SMART Notebook file. Open SMART Notebook using SMART Board. Perform audio check with test video. Start recording Go over all of the presentation Stop recording Save to H: drive with common identifying name (*.wmv) Open video in Video Convertor to convert into *.mov Copy converted video into Carmine drive Create a URL link in Bb. Set to open in new window.

Challenges Availability to SmartBoard to record video lectures. Need graphics-user interface to write equations or provide other information Tablets can be used, by cheaper one don t let you see what you are written. Difficult to highlight or go back to a particular point Sound.. Requires a wireless or hardwired microphone. Compatibility???? Always run a voice check prior to recording for 1 hr. Hard lessons learned! Time It takes me ~2 hours to make an equivalent of a 1 hr lecture and get it posted on Bb. Slow internet connection with students. Have them save to flash drive and watch later Go to high speed connection for downloads (e.g. public library)
