Admissions Timeine SNU s academic year begins in the Spring. The university offers admissions for the Fa semester as we as the Spring. Pease note the foowing important dates: Order Deadine Notes 1. On-ine Appication ²Freshmen ²Transfer ²Graduate Jan. 9 (Mon), 2012 ~Feb. 28 (Tue),2012 (by 6:00pm) * Find Internationa Admission at the SNU website and create an account during the specified period (Korean) http://admission.snu.ac.kr (Engish) http://en.snu.ac.kr * Entrance to the program is in Fa 2012. 2. Submission of Documents (Send by post or visit in person) ²Freshmen ²Transfer ²Graduate Jan. 9 (Mon), 2012 ~Feb. 29 (Wed),2012 (by 6:00pm) The required documents shoud arrive at the SNU Office of Admissions by this date. Appicants must have aready competed the onine appication. The venue for document submission is expected to draw very arge crowds cose to deadine. To ensure proper handing of your case, pease submit your documents as eary as possibe. 3. Performance Test (for undergraduate appicants of Korean origin who received the entire education abroad) Mar. 29 (Thu), 2012 * Ony appies to undergraduate appicants of Korean origin appying to the foowing programs : Fine Arts, Music, or Physica Education * The detais wi be notified individuay by the representatives of the reevant Coege/Department directy. 4. Announcement of Admissions Decision Apr. 20 (Fri), 2012 * Resuts wi be posted on the SNU website (Korean) http://admission.snu.ac.kr (Engish) http://en.snu.ac.kr 5. Registration Aug. 2012 (TBA) * At the branches of NongHyup Bank nationwide. 6. Korean Proficiency Test Aug. 2012 (TBA) * The abovementioned SNU website wi indicate those who are required to take the Korean Proficiency Test on the admission resut announcement screen. The dates above are subject to change without a prior notice. Pease Note 1. If it is not possibe to appy onine during the designated period, appicants may submit their appication materias via post or in person. Ony accepted if the documents arrive before the deadine: Feb. 28 th 2012. In such case, pease make sure to incude the appication fee with your appication packet. 2. The dates and deadines isted above are in accordance to the appication process for the Fa 2012 semester. 2

Admissions Criteria Admissions decisions are based on the candidate s academic achievements and potentia, as we as his or her persona accompishments. The admissions committee reviews a number of factors records of past studies such as Grade Point Average (GPA), study pan, persona statement, and etters of recommendation. Other achievement records and specific quaifications such as anguage proficiency are aso taken into consideration. The candidate s appication is reviewed in the context of the eve of studies competed, quaity of achievements, and characteristics of institutions attended. Finay, the appropriateness of the appicant s academic goas and the suitabiity of preparation for the proposed program of studies are assessed. Interviews, examinations, and/or additiona documents may be required from the appicant, based on the poicy of the specific coege or department. If the appicant is appying to the Fine Arts, the Music, the Department of Physica Education or the Fine Arts Education Major, the appicant wi be notified individuay as necessary. Appication Instructions Pease observe the foowing instructions before beginning your appication. Form 1: Appication Form Form 1 contains your persona information. Pease specify your desired area of study, using Appendix 1 of this booket as a reference. Undergraduate Freshmen Appicants: Indicate the coege and corresponding admissions unit. Undergraduate Transfer Appicants: Indicate the coege and department. Graduate Appicants: Indicate the coege or professiona schoo and corresponding major. Fi out this form at the SNU website (http://admission.snu.ac.kr or http://en.snu.ac.kr), according to the specifications in the section tited Submitting Your Appication on page 15. The appication fee ( 90,000) must be paid onine with this portion of the appication. NOTE: If you are unabe to make the payment onine, pease incude the fee in your appication package with the rest of the appication materias to be submitted via post or in person. The fee shoud be in the form of a bank draft (US$75) payabe to Office of Admissions, SNU. š Form 2: Persona Statement & Study Pan Persona Statement This is an opportunity for you to convey the information about yoursef and your accompishments that coud not be adequatey expressed through other portions of the appication. 3

Incude famiy background, academic achievements, extracurricuar commitments and accompishments, vounteer work, empoyment experience, and your reasons for appying to SNU. Other appropriate topics may incude the foowing but not imited to: persona interests, pastime activities, opinions on music, the arts, etc. Study Pan The Study Pan shoud state your academic goas and career aspirations. You may incude questions that you hope to answer through your program of study and/or a timeine for how you pan to meet your objectives. It is advised that you review the requirements for the desired degree. We recommend that you discuss your academic goas with a teacher or professor prior to composing your study pan. š Form 3: Recommendation Two etters of recommendation from teachers or professors are required. Compete your part of this form and, aong with a stamped and addressed enveope, suppy them directy to two recommenders who know you we. Be sure to give them adequate time to compete the forms before the appication deadine. Recommendations shoud be seaed in an officia enveope and signed across the back by the recommenders. Your recommenders shoud give us their appraisas of the contributions you made in their casses or academic fieds. They are asked to give their persona impressions about your character, inteectua abiity, aptitude in research, and the quaity of your previous works and potentia. š Form 4: Financia Certification Form 4 shoud ist the avaiabe financia resources for your tuition and other expenses. No other documents reated to sponsorship are necessary. NOTE: If admitted, the foowing ist of documents wi be required for the issuance of visa: bank statements, certificate of empoyment / business registration, tax payment information, etc. š Transcripts, Graduation Certificates, Degree Certificates These documents detai your academic achievements and are required from every institution that you ve attended in the past (excuding eementary & midde schoo records). Transcripts must provide a record of the courses you have taken in each year of study aong with the fina grades. If an institution cannot provide a year-by-year record, then the schoo officia must at east provide us with a isting of the discipines you have studied (i.e. Engish, Bioogy, History, etc.) and a summary of your achievements in each. 4

Pease submit officia transcripts as issued directy by the institutions you have attended. You must aso submit officia evidence of the conferras of a degrees, dipomas, or professiona tites showing the date of the conferras (month and year). š Additiona Materias Other reevant materias may be required, according to the poicy of the specific coege or department that you are appying to. Appicants to the Fine Arts, the Music, the Department of Physica Education or the Fine Arts Education Major shoud submit appropriate portfoios, videotapes, CDs, tapes, or other indicators of artistic or athetic abiity. NOTE: Appicants appying to the Fine Arts or Music must refer to the instructions provided on the appicabe Coege s homepages. š Suppementary Materias APPLICANTS TO UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMS 1) Records of tests and various awards attained in high schoo wi be considered in the admissions decision if submitted. w The reevant country s quaifying test for high schoo graduation or university admission test: British GCE A-Leve, Japanese Admission Center Exam, Chinese Unified Exam, German Abitur, French Baccaaureate, etc. w Standardized tests and other indicators of academic achievement: IB Dipoma, IB Certificate, AP, SAT, AICE, AEA, etc. w w Records of acceerated and rigorous coursework: AP, IB, Honors, etc. Officia etter or other document by the high schoo that indicates the appicant s cass rank or percentie (if not stated in appicant s academic transcript) w Proof of anguage proficiency: TOPIK, KLPT, TEPS, TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIK, HSK, JLPT, DELF/DALF, DELE, ZD, etc. 2) Officia schoo introduction/profie(s) pubished by the appicant s high schoo or the government education ministry wi be considered in the admissions decision. The introductory document may incude information on the high schoo s curricuum, avaiabiity of acceerated and rigorous academic tracks, size of student body, grade distribution of enroed students, distribution of standardized test performance, student seection process, admissions requirements and ratio of students entering higher institutions. APPLICANTS TO GRADUATE PROGRAMS Proof of anguage proficiency: TOPIK, KLPT, TEPS, TOEFL, IELTS, TOEIK, HSK, JLPT, DELF/DALF, DELE, ZD, etc. Academic awards, certificates, test reports (GRE, GMAT, etc.) š 5

Engish Proficiency Appicants shoud submit a score report of a recognized Engish Proficiency Test (TOEFL, TEPS, IELTS, TOEIC or any other supporting documents which demonstrate appropriate anguage proficiency). Native speakers of Engish are exempt from this requirement. N.B. Depending on the academic department, faiing to demonstrate one s Engish proficiency may adversey affect one s candidacy for acceptance. NOTE: We accept TOEFL scores sent to us directy by ETS if it arrives before deadine. The officia ETS code of SNU is 7972. You may submit a photocopy of the Examinee s Score Report for review purposes ony, but this is not a substitute for an officia score report. š Korean Proficiency Appicants shoud submit a score report of a recognized Korean Proficiency Test [Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), Korean Language Proficiency Test (KLPT) or any other supporting documents which demonstrate appropriate anguage proficiency.] N.B. Depending on the academic department, faiing to demonstrate one s Korean proficiency may adversey affect one s candidacy for acceptance. Based on the submitted appication materias, the admissions committee wi decide whether each admitted student shoud take the additiona test or not. Admitted students who are notified for the Korean Proficiency Test at SNU Language Education Institution (LEI) shoud refer to the test schedue incuded in the Reference Guide for the Admitted Internationa Students for the date and ocation of the test. Note: The foowing individuas can be exempt from the Korean Proficiency Test at SNU LEI and whether or not this rue appies wi be determined by the department in which the appicant appied: 1) He or she was admitted to the Graduate Schoo of Internationa Studies for Internationa Commerce, Internationa Cooperation or Internationa Area Studies. 2) He or she hods a Bacheor s degree from SNU. 3) He or she hods a Master s degree from SNU. 4) He or she competed and passed Leve 5 or above at the SNU Language Education Institute. 5) He or she received Leve 5 or above on the Korean Proficiency Test administered by a Korean Embassy or Consuate. Students whose Korean proficiency is beow the eve required to effectivey participate in cass (i.e. Leve 4 and beow) wi be required to take Korean Language casses at the SNU Language Education Institute (http://ei.snu.ac.kr) at their own expense. Whether or not this rue appies wi be determined by the department in which the student is enroed. 6

Important Notes for A Appicants SNU does not generay acknowedge internationa schoos ocated in Korea as foreign schoos. A documents shoud be in Engish or Korean. Documents in any other anguage shoud be accompanied by a notarized Engish or Korean transation issued by the country in which the document was originay produced. If any of the submitted materias contain fase information, admission wi be rescinded. Origina documents shoud be submitted. Shoud they be unavaiabe, however, copies must be authorized by the originating institution before they are submitted. Students whose graduations were pending at other institutions during the time of appication shoud submit their Graduation Certificates and the Certificates of their degrees to the Office of Admissions within 15 days after their enroment at SNU. Faiure to submit this document may revoke the admission offer. Undergraduate transfer appicants of Korean origin must submit the entire record of their Certificate of Facts Concerning the Entry and Exit. In case of submission of fase or unverifiabe information (especiay those resuting from mutipe passport handing) or faiure to submit a of the requisite records may adversey affect one s candidacy for acceptance. Undergraduate transfer appicants must submit a of the reevant documents from their respective universities (i.e., officia transcripts, etters of attendance, etc.) to demonstrate the current matricuation status and attendance at their present bacheor s degree program. Be sure to make and keep photocopies of a competed forms. Submitted documents become property of SNU and wi not be returned to the appicants. The appication fee is nonrefundabe. Admitted students may not defer enroment to a ater semester. Students who wish to defer enroment must re-appy. Korean citizens who hod dua citizenship are considered as Appicants of Korean Origin. They are not eigibe to appy as foreign students. Those appicants who were admitted to SNU within the ast 5 years through internationa admissions and intend to appy to a Master s or Doctora program are exempt from submitting the foowing: Officia certificates of graduation and transcripts from schoos and/or universities outside of Korea Certificate of Facts Concerning the Entry and Exit Officia document indicating parent-chid reationship between the appicant and his/her parent Appicants exempt from submitting any of the above documents shoud submit the Certificate of Attendance or Graduation at SNU instead. 7

Pease be sure that the University issues ony the Certificate of Admissions for student VISA (type: D2) appication for the admitted students. However, for information on submitting the Approva Number of Visa Issuance for Chinese students, pease refer to the Office of Internationa Affairs website (http://oia.snu.ac.kr/info/visa). A transfer and graduate appicants must submit a document that verifies the current institution is equivaent to a four-year coege/university. Verification of Academic Record form wi be part of the appication and you wi be abe to print upon competion of onine appication. Detaied account of individua admissions decision for each appicant cannot be discosed. Pease be sure that, in principe, any modification or canceation wi not be accepted after competing the appication. Appicants shoud take fu responsibiity for any disadvantages due to the mistakes or omissions on the appication. Foreign students, whose parents are not citizens of Korea and have obtained their entire education abroad, may submit the Certificate of Facts Concerning the Entry and Exit issued by the Korea Immigration Office, as a substitute for the certificate of parents-chid reationship and copies of parents passport. If the appicant does not have the means to obtain the certificate and cannot receive assistance from someone residing in Korea, he/she must submit the Permission of Inquiry of Certificate of Entry and Exit (Form5) as a substitute. Pease verify the accuracy of the information on the required form as the appicant wi take fu responsibiity for any disadvantages arising from errors or omission of the necessary information on the form. Appicants who transferred during their prior course of studies, must submit their fu compete academic records from a of the appicabe institutions incuding Transcripts and Certificate of Graduation/Attendance. If the appicant appies through more than one registration number (dupicate appication), he/she wi be disquaified from the admission. Appicants appying to the Fine Arts or Music must refer to the instructions regarding the additiona materias (portfoio, photographs of works, recordings of performances, etc.) provided on the appicabe Coege s homepages. 8

Important Notes about APOSTILLE Requirements For Newy Admitted Students Since Juy 14, 2007, the Repubic of Korea has been part of the 1961 Hague Convention aboishing the Requirement of Legaization for Foreign Pubic Documents. The Convention provides for the simpified certification or pubic (incuding notarized) documents to be used in countries that have joined the convention. The Apostie ensures that pubic documents issued in one signatory country wi be recognized as vaid in another signatory country. Apostie certificates are to be submitted within 15 days after enroment at SNU. For information regarding how to get an Apostie, pease refer to the website www.hcch.net. A. Newy admitted students from countries which are signatories to the convention must meet the foowing requirements: Pease refer to the ist of signatory countries on Apostie certificates in Appendix 4. 1. Officia certificates (transcripts, dipomas, etc.) from pubic schoos or institutions shoud be submitted with the attachment of Apostie. 2. Officia certificates (transcripts, dipomas, etc.) from private schoos or institutions, however, shoud be officiay notarized by a notary, agency or any other authority competent under the aw of the country of origin of the certificates, and then, shoud be submitted with the attachment of Apostie. N.B. A documents shoud be in Engish or Korean. accompanied by a notarized Engish or Korean transation. Document in another anguage shoud be B. Admitted students from countries which are NOT signatories to the convention and do not recognize the Apostie must meet the foowing requirements: 1. A documents shoud be in Engish or Korean. accompanied by a notarized Engish or Korean transation. Document in another anguage shoud be 9

Notes for Appicants of Korean Origin Appicants of Korean origin who competed their entire education (primary, secondary, postsecondary) outside of Korea must submit the Certificate of Facts Concerning the Entry and Exit. 1. The certificate must contain compete records from birth to present and if there are any missing records, appicant must submit the Certificate of Attendance corresponding with the vacant period aong with the Certificate of Facts Concerning the Entry and Exit. 2. If the appicant has modifications to their persona information (from being naturaized as a foreign citizen, change of name, issuance of a new passport and etc.), he/she must submit compete records of their entry and exit from birth to present incuding those records from prior to the appicabe change. 3. Submitting Your Appication Appication Form 1. The standard method for submitting Form 1 of the appication is via the NOTICE of website; (http://admission.snu.ac.kr) or (http://en.snu.ac.kr). The appication fee ( 90,000) shoud be paid onine as we. 2. For Fa 2012, the deadine for onine appication is 18:00 (oca time Korea), Feb. 28 th, 2012. A reevant information must be entered, and the appication fee paid, prior to this time. Appicants who fai to appy onine due to unforeseen circumstances must appy in person at the Office of Admissions before 18:00 of this date. 3. The appication fee ( 90,000) must be paid onine with this portion of the appication. NOTE: If you are unabe to pay the appication fee via our internet payment process, you shoud incude the fee with the appication materias you send by mai. The fee shoud be in the form of a bank draft (US$75) payabe to Office of Admissions, SNU. 4. Appicants whose forms and supporting documents are incompete or unsatisfactory wi be disquaified from the admissions process. Origina documents shoud be submitted. Shoud they be unavaiabe, however, copies must be authorized by the originating institution before they are submitted.
