2 msc economics The Programme The LUMS MSc Economics programme has been designed to set a new standard in graduate eve economics education in the country, and to meet the growing need for we-trained economists in both the pubic and private sectors. The programme provides strong grounding in theory and appication, and is based upon a rigorous curricuum consisting of core and eective courses with the option of Master s thesis and speciaisations in Deveopment Economics, Economic Theory and Finance, Money & Banking. The core courses are Microeconomic Anaysis, Macroeconomic Anaysis, Econometric Anaysis, Mathematica Anaysis and Appied Econometrics. The eective courses are offered from the areas of concentration of the avaiabe facuty, which incude Deveopment Economics, Game Theory and Appied Game Theory, Pubic Finance, Growth Modes, Trade and Deveopment, Poitica Economy, Industria Organisation, Labour Economics and Agricutura Economics. The one year track is aimed at appicants with a strong academic background in economics and the two year track is aimed at candidates who do not have the adequate economics grounding. The first year of the two year track requires candidates to deveop a suitabe background in economics by successfuy competing a required number of economics courses. In the one year track students wi be required to compete either 30 credit hours of course work, or 26 credit hours of course work and a Master s thesis (4 credit hours). Under the two-year stream, students wi have to compete undergraduate eve courses (28 credit hours) in the first year and 30 credit hours in the second year, same as in the one year track. Research Faciities LUMS envisions becoming a cutting-edge research institute for the region and faciitates research for students and facuty aike. Its muti-discipinary ibrary serves the facuty, students, researchers and staff of the university. Its coection is ideay suited to encourage and support both schoary pursuits and practica research activities. Supported by state-of-the-art technoogy and systems. The ibrary has an extensive coection of over 200,000 printed and 130,000 onine books, 35,000 journas, and 30,000 other materias incuding audios, videos, CD-ROMs, ad DVDs, to faciitate various research and academic pursuits. The Data Resource Unit (DRU) is an onine repository of data resources deveoped by the Department of Economics at LUMS to faciitate academic and poicy oriented research on Pakistan. With a few exceptions, the data resources at the Department of Economics mosty consist of individua and househod-eve data from Pakistan s househod and abour force surveys, government surveys, financia and provincia deveopment statistics and LUMS surveys. DRU aows its users instant onine access to datasets pertaining to miions of househods and individuas and accompanying documentation in the form of origina questionnaires and additiona materia e.g., code books and section-wise description of data sets. This exhaustive hub of data resources is constanty being updated. Presenty, about 90 datasets are avaiabe on-ine or offine in SPSS and Stata format. 2

Residentia Coeges To increase interaction and understanding between newy arriving freshmen and existing students, and encourage personaised interaction with mentors, LUMS has adopted the Residentia Coege mode. A residentia coege is an independenty governed community within the university and acts as a facuty-ed society for both hoste residents and day schoars. Presenty there are four Residentia Coeges functioning at LUMS. Each Residentia Coege hods activities and socia events for students to buid a more cohesive environment and sense of community. Societies Students are encouraged to take part in a number of student-run cubs or societies, catering to a diverse range of interests. Whether it is the LUMS Adventure Society (LAS), the LUMS Entrepreneuria Society (LES), the LUMS Mode UN Society (LUMUN), or Sports at LUMS (SLUMS), students are made to fee part of the LUMS community. 5

6 msc economics Admission Criteria LUMS ensures strict adherence to merit. The admission criteria for the MSc Economics programme is: Academic record Entrance GRE (Genera)/ LUMS Graduate Admissions Test (LGAT) scores LUMS Pacement Test (for one-year track students ony) Letters of recommendation Academic record Any one of the foowing academic quaifications wi satisfy the eigibiity requirements for admission: Sixteen years of education resuting in a Master s or four year Bacheor s degree from a recognised university Three year BA/BSc Honours from a recognised internationa university Students with insufficient training in Mathematics/ Economics are strongy advised to take the two year track. Fina decision regarding eigibiity for the one-year or two-year programme wi be taken by the Admissions Committee. Candidates with degrees from institutions not isted with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan wi be required to get an equivaence certificate from the HEC. Entrance Test Graduate Record Examination (GRE) GRE (Genera) is offered as a computer adaptive test wordwide. GREs taken more than five years prior to the admission deadine wi not be considered vaid. It is important to note that ony GRE resuts that are received by LUMS directy from Educationa Testing Service (ETS) in the US wi be accepted. LUMS code for GRE is OR 6

7 LUMS Graduate Admission Test (LGAT) LGAT is offered as an aternative to candidates who are unabe to take the GRE. LGAT is administered in Karachi, Lahore and Isamabad simutaneousy. LUMS MSc Economics Pacement Test (For one-year students ony) A students appying to the one-year MSc Economics programme must take the pacement test. However, this test is not required for candidates appying for the two year track. The pacement test is administered in Karachi, Lahore and Isamabad and tests the intermediate eve of micro and macro economic theory. The average number of credit hours taken per year is 30. Students wi be responsibe for buying their own books and other reading materia. Estimated expenses for reading materia is Rs per credit. Financia Assistance LUMS provides financia assistance to deserving candidates every year. Schoarships and oans are awarded on need and merit basis. Currenty, 45% of the students at LUMS are getting financia assistance in the forms of schoarships and oans which are both need and merit-based. Last year PKR 1, 024, 650 were given as financia assistance to Lums MSc Economics students. 7
