WELCOME MEDICAL LABORATORY TECHNOLOGY ADMISSIONS PACKET Thank you for your interest in the Medical Laboratory Technology program at the Essex Campus of The Community College of Baltimore County. The A.A.S. degree program in Medical Laboratory Technology is designed to prepare students to function in the highly complex arena of laboratory medicine. Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) perform a variety of complex laboratory tests which play an important role in the detection, diagnosis, and treatment of many diseases and in the promotion of health. They develop data on blood, tissues, and other human body fluids by using highly computerized and automated instruments. They interpret patient results, evaluate quality control test results, and maintain equipment in good working order. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics states that employment for Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLTs) is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2014, as the volume of laboratory tests continues to increase, with both population growth and the development of new tests. The Medical Laboratory Technology program at CCBC offers the full range of clinical and didactic experiences for students who wish to practice as MLTs. Students will complete clinical rotations in local hospitals and reference laboratories. The program offers articulation agreements with regional four-year schools to enable MLT program graduates to transfer and complete a bachelor s degree in Medical Laboratory Science for those wishing to continue their education. ACCREDITATION Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the Board of Certification examination given by the American Society For Clinical Pathology. The program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) WWW.NAACLS.ORG; 5600 N. River Road, Suite 720, Rosemont, IL. 60018-5119; (773)714-8880. There are scholarships available to students in the MLT Program. For more information, please email Candice Grayson at cgrayson@ccbcmd.edu FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS 1. What does certification mean and is it necessary to work in a clinical lab? Certification assures competency so you can work in a variety of lab settings. When you pass certification exams, you can use the initials of your certification after your name. Most laboratories desire certified personnel to do moderate and high complexity testing. Institutions are increasingly requiring the successful completion of the certification exam part of a new employee probation requirement. 2. What are clinical rotations? Didactic courses are offered on-campus in both day and evening classes and while they provide both an opportunity to experience lab work and build lab skills, clinical rotations provide students a real-work experience. 3. Where do students get clinical experience? Clinical experience is obtained in hospital laboratories, independent free standing laboratories and physician based offices. 4. What is the employment outlook for Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs)? The US Bureau of Labor Statistics states that employment is expected to grow faster than the average for all occupations through the year 2014, as the volume of laboratory tests continues to increase, with both population growth and the development of new tests. 5. What is the median annual salary for a MLT? Nationally, the median annual salary for MLT s is approximately $45,000. 6. Can I further my education after completing this program? Students can further their education, as the MLT associate degree program prepares students to transfer into a Medical Laboratory Science bachelor s degree program. 10 P a g e
