Hibbing Community College s Online Medical Laboratory Technician Program may be just what you are looking for! Program Description The Online Medical Laboratory Technician Option offers individuals who are currently employed in a clinical laboratory the opportunity to move up the laboratory career ladder without having to quit their jobs or relocate and go back to school full-time. Attending part-time, students earn an Associates of Applied Science degree that allows them to sit for national certification exams. Medical Laboratory Technician Online Program The didactic (lecture) component of this program will be delivered online by experienced Hibbing Community College faculty. The laboratory component of each course is completed with the help of a designated mentor or facilitator where you are employed or at another approved clinical site. The mentor/facilitator works with you on assigned laboratory exercises and serves as a proctor for written examinations. A detailed list of laboratory expectations is provided with each course. (These laboratory competencies can be reviewed by your mentor in advance by contacting the course instructor). At the end of the course, your mentor signs off on these labs, including comments on your performance.
2 Program Mission Statement/Goals Hibbing Community College Medical Laboratory Technician program is a NAACLS accredited program committed to improving the quality of care as an integral component of the health care team. With the collaboration of our clinical affiliates, MLT graduates will adhere to the highest ethical and safety standards expected of health care professionals, provide high quality, reliable patient laboratory results, and maintain exceptional levels of confidentiality, integrity, and professionalism. Working collectively and collaboratively exhibiting skills in leadership, perseverance, and integrity, Identifying, collecting, and processing patient specimens in accordance with current HIPAA laws and regulations. Adhering to and practicing all clinical safety guidelines to include chemical, biological, and safety as it relates to patient laboratory testing Demonstrating identification and understanding of basic red cell and white cell development stages and morphologies and relating findings to hematologically normal as well as diseased states Demonstrating a basic understanding of urinalysis and body fluids in chemistries and microscopic findings relating to healthy and diseased states Demonstrating a basic understanding of microbiology, and mycology in identification methodologies and findings in normal as well as disease states Possessing foundational knowledge of blood banking to include blood typing, antibody identification, transfusion services, neonatal workups, component therapy, and administration Working concept of the bodies chemistries, systems, and markers including acid/base balance, proteins, enzymes, therapeutic drug monitoring, toxicology and instrumentation Demonstrating professional conduct and interpersonal communication skills with patients, laboratory personnel, other health care professionals, and with the public. Persevering in becoming life-long learners, exemplifying critical thinking skills and a desire for personal engagement Medical Laboratory Technician Online Program Program Mission/Goals MLT Competencies Program Accreditation Program Completion: Upon graduation from Hibbing Community College and initial employment, the medical laboratory technician will be eligible to take the ASCP Board of Registry Exam. Degree confirmation is not contingent upon the passage of the Board of Registry. HCC does not guarantee that the MLT program will meet the requirements necessary for individual state licensure. 3 Essential Functions The following Essential Functions are intended to identify technical standards needed in the Medical Laboratory Technician curriculum and are representative of the standards expected in industry. The college will make all reasonable accommodations required by law to enable otherwise qualified individuals to participate in this program. Medical Laboratory Technician Program Essential Functions Admission Criteria Admissions Criteria Hibbing Community College is an open enrollment campus, which means any student with a high school diploma or GED will be accepted. Students who do not meet the above requirements may still be accepted after taking the ability to benefit exam. Due to Federal and State requirements HCC will not accept students physical presence in certain states. Please check with admissions regarding your state s acceptability. *To be accepted into the online MLT Program, you must be currently employed in an accredited (JACHO/CAP/COLA/CLIA) laboratory that can provide a multidisciplinary laboratory experience and you must have an available lab department to include microbiology and immunohematology (blood bank). Prior to your acceptance into the MLT Online Program, your employer must sign a Statement of Support (included). Your application will not be approved until this Statement of Support is reviewed by the MLT Program Director. All individuals designated as Preceptors listed on the Facility Fact Sheet must complete a Facility Fact Sheet and submit as well. Institutions with CLIA certification must submit preceptor continuing education documentation. Academic Requirements Few MLT courses require college level reading and/or an Accuplacer Math score of 69 or better. Those not meeting these requirements will be guided to pursue refresher or redial courses prior to admission to the MLT program. Applications to the Online MLT Program will be accepted on a firstqualified, first-admitted (based on the date of your completed application) until the class limit has been reached. You can begin the Online Program in any semester providing the maximum student enrollment (25 students) has not been reached. When applicant numbers exceed program capacity, applicants are placed on a wait-list based on date of receipt of a completed application by the Admissions Office. If an applicant is not successful in gaining acceptance into the program, the applicant may request that his/her application be reconsidered for the following semester. There is no additional cost for this request. Working closely with an academic advisor, students may be able to fulfill some of their general education program requirements while waiting for an opening in the program.
4 Frequently Asked Questions Is the program accredited? Yes, the program is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences; 5600 N. River Rd., Suite 720, Rosemont, IL Do you accept students from outside Minnesota? Yes. Students in Hibbing Community College s Online MLT Program come from all across the country. However, state legislatures change rulings and regulations. We may need to check with your state upon your application. Medical Laboratory Technician Online Program Frequently Asked Questions Can international students apply? Yes, if you meet the application requirements. But this has proved to be very difficult. You must perform your laboratory competencies in a clinical laboratory that is accredited by U.S. standards JCHAO, CAP, COLA, or CLIA. For more information about International Applications, contact our Admissions Department. How long does it take to complete the program? The program is sequenced into cohorts and can be completed in 3 years. The Online MLT program takes 3 years because, taking into account your very busy lives, you take an average of 6 8 credits per semester rather than the credits of a full-time load. 6-8 credits each semester will keep you more than busy! I understand that all of the MLT program courses are online. What about the general education and support courses? All of the course requirements for the A.A.S degree are offered online. Do I ever have to come to campus? No, but we encourage you to come and celebrate your graduation during our commencement exercises! What about tests? Won t I have to go to campus to take tests? No. Some courses may require that tests or other assignments be proctored at a location convenient to you. Information about test proctoring and acceptable test sites can be found at: I have an unpredictable work schedule. Will I have to be online at a specific time and day? No. All communication within the online courses is asynchronous, that is, by message centers and . Students can log on and participate when it is most convenient for them. How can I get help if I need it? Course instructors interact directly with students typically through , instant messaging, and online discussion boards. Each instructor will post information about the best method to contact them in the course materials. You can contact the school s academic counselors for help if you are feeling overwhelmed or just need to talk about how things are going. I have already earned credits at another college. Will those credits transfer? Credits earned at accredited colleges and universities usually transfer. You will need to submit an official transcript from each college you attended and they will be evaluated by a transfer specialist in our counseling office.

6 Statement of Support MLT Online Program Hibbing Community College, Hibbing, Minnesota is excited to be able to offer a fully accredited MLT program Online. The online program option allows a valued employee the opportunity to further their educational goals and obtain certification required for advanced levels of laboratory work without changing jobs, relocating or going back to school full-time. The didactic component of this program will be delivered online by experienced Hibbing Community College faculty. The laboratory component of the program will be completed at the student s work place or other approved clinical site with the help of a designated mentor or facilitator. This facilitator/mentor works with the student on assigned laboratory exercises and serves as a proctor for written examinations. To complete the required laboratory assignments, the student will need access to laboratory procedure manuals, laboratory instrumentation, and bench supplies and reagents at the facility. Before the student can be accepted into the Online program, the student must obtain this Statement of Support indicating that their employer understands and is willing to undertake these responsibilities. In addition, the Facility Fact Sheet (see attached) must be completed and reviewed by Hibbing Community College s Academic Affairs and Standards Committee before the student s application can be finalized. 7 Statement of Support 1. The purpose of this Agreement shall be to provide laboratory support and instructional mentoring to students enrolled in the MLT Online program at Hibbing Community College. 2. The laboratory support shall be provided at located at hereafter referred to as the CLINICAL FACILITY. RESPONSIBILITIES OF HIBBING COMMUNITY COLLEGE: A. Hibbing Community College will designate a Faculty Member for the purpose of providing adequate direction and coordination of the student s off-site laboratory training. B. Hibbing Community College will provide the CLINICAL FACILITY with written objectives for each online course. C. Hibbing Community College and Faculty will be responsible for the planning, development, and evaluation of all online courses. RESPONSIBILITIES OF CLINICAL FACILITY: A. The CLINICAL FACILITY will maintain current accreditation by recognized regional and/or national agencies (e.g., CLIA, CAP, COLA, JCAHO). The CLINICAL FACILITY will notify the MLT Program Director of any reduction, cancellation or proposed cancellation of such accreditation. B. The CLINICAL FACILITY will designate a qualified staff member to serve as a Mentor/Clinical Facilitator for the student s laboratory training. C. The Mentor/Facilitator: 1. shall provide directly or through his/her designee supervision of student s laboratory activities at the CLINICAL FACILITY. 2. shall serve as a proctor for written examinations. 3. shall keep any student records required by Hibbing Community College. JOINT RESPONSIBILITIES: A. Prohibition Against Discrimination. Hibbing Community College and the CLINICAL FACILITY jointly agree that the parties shall not discriminate in their training or education of any person or in the conditions of training or education or in other actions taken as a result of this Agreement by reason of race, sex, color, creed, religion, age, national origin, disability, marital status, status with regard
8 to public assistance, sexual orientation, or membership or activity in a local commission as defined by law. In consideration of the mutual benefits to the respective parties, Hibbing Community College and the CLINICAL FACILITY agree to the terms set forth above. Students work together with their designated mentor(s) to complete the listed competencies before a course grade will be awarded. Expected levels of proficiency are defined for each skill. LEVEL 1: Discussed: Student is able to discuss appropriate procedural steps and demonstrates an understanding of concepts. Competency is successfully demonstrated by the student explaining the procedure or principle to the student mentor. LEVEL 2: Practiced: Student has practiced the skill under the direction and supervision of the student s mentor. It is requested that the student's laboratory skill evaluation be completed by the clinical mentor in the presence of the student so as to allow verbal feedback to the student regarding the student's progress and performance.
