This approach to University Education led to around three quarters of our students graduating from our undergraduate courses with either a 2:1 or First Class Honours degree in 2013. OUR CAMPUS UCLan urnley has been developed around a strong partnership between urnley College and the University of Central Lancashire that has been in place for over 20 years. The campus itself is now in its fifth year of delivering first class education and is the only University within the heart of Pennine Lancashire. There are a variety of stately homes, museums and national trust locations, including Towneley Hall, Gawthorpe Hall, Weavers Triangle and Queen Street Mill, the latter of which was used as a location for the Oscar award winning King s Speech in 2010. The town also plays host to the annual urnley International Rock and lues Festival, which takes place each May, and features artists from around the world playing in locations across the town. Class Environment The new UCLan urnley campus first opened its doors in 2009, showcasing a purpose built, state of the art campus, with first class facilities and resources available across all areas. TEACHING FACILITIES Our range of teaching facilities includes interactive whiteboard and full lecture recording facilities in every teaching and IT Lab. Fees & Finance UCLan urnley offers a high quality university experience, with a range of first class programmes, whilst also providing good value for money. Our teaching, support and facilities are of the highest standard and we offer good value by keeping our fees low, in order to ensure that a first class university education can be accessed by everyone. Our Courses Explained FOUNDATION ENTRY Foundation Entry courses are a preparatory year of a degree for those who do not have the academic requirements for direct entry and/or those who have been out of education for a while and need to refresh their study skills, before embarking on the first year of the course. ACCREDITED PRIOR LEARNING (APL) OR ACCREDITED PRIOR EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING (APEL) APL is based on the premise that a number of applicants to UCLan urnley will already have experience within their chosen field, and we welcome this on most courses. POSTGRADUATE AND MASTERS PROGRAMMES Postgraduate programmes, such as Postgraduate Certificates and Masters Degrees, are designed for those who already hold a A/Sc honours degree. A/Sc/Eng DEGREES These are full degree programmes which prepare you for employment, entry to graduate schemes or postgraduate study. You can access our degree courses on a full time or part time basis. Most full-time courses require 15 hours study time in class each week. FOUNDATION DEGREES, HNC AND HND PROGRAMMES These are university level programmes, combining both academic and vocational skills, designed to improve your career prospects and earning potential in industry. The business courses at UCLan urnley will give you a deep understanding of business and administration disciplines and will develop the leadership, project management and administrative skills needed in today s competitive business environment. These degree programmes have been developed alongside employers to prepare you for the modern business world. We are committed to developing students with the knowledge and skills that meet the expectations of business and to create work-ready graduates, as well as enhancing the existing skills of current employees who are looking to progress within the workplace. We have strong links with a number of high profile businesses and regularly invite guest speakers to talk to and work with students. The programmes allow for a great deal of flexibility in career choices, leaving students well placed for a diverse range of career opportunities to choose from. TEACHING, LEARNING & ASSESSMENT Students will be taught by lecturers with extensive business experience, bringing a real-world learning experience into the lecture theatre. Many courses also incorporate specialist speakers, company visits, real life consultancy and projects. Work-based learning is integral to the course aims, enabling the evaluation of skills and knowledge in practice and you will be able to complete a work based project on behalf of your organisation. Assessment is continuous and students can expect coursework assignments including essays and reports, oral presentations, analysing case studies, investigating relevant companies and tackling briefs from industry. Teamwork skills are also developed through group assessments. A few modules have a written examination but formal examination accounts for no more than 50 per cent of the final mark. The programme is designed to enable students to become effective community leaders within various professional situations. It follows a three stage learning process: theoretical perspectives, application of theory in practice, and reflection on application. The programme will engage the student in acquiring transferable skills in leadership and management, whilst also allowing them to explore concepts relating to community within a broader social and cultural context.
