Outline Introduction Current Users Chiller Plant Cooling Tower South Campus Athletic Fields King Library Dual Plumbing Planned Users Main Campus Irrigation Student Union Dual Plumbing Steam Plant Make-Up Feed SPX Dual Plumbing
Regulatory Framework California i Code of Regulations Title 22 Chapter 16 of the 2010 California Plumbing Code Department of Public Health (DPH) South Bay Water Recyclers: inspection authority for piping systems.
Public Water Source SJSU is Public Water System (PWS) with source wells and distribution systems the operational authority is under jurisdiction of DPH Drinking Water and Cross- Control Programs SJSU Recycled Water Program operational authority is under SBWR by delegated authority under DPH 25,000 FTE population p 10 city blocks and 88 acres plus another 60 acres of Spartan Athletic Fields 52 buildings and 5,000,000 GSF
Overall Usage: Campus Annual Potable Water Usage is approximately 435 AF per year (142,000,000, gallons) Through conversion to Reclaimed Water and conservation we can reduce this usage by up to 45%. How it Breaks Down: Academic Usage (current) : 223 AF per year Irrigation Usage (60% complete) : 120 AF per year King (complete) : 15 AF per year Student Union (20% complete) : 17 AF per year Cogen/Steam Plant Make-up water (F) : 60 AF per year (Does not include cooling tower or south campus totals of 61 AFY)
Water Sources: Main Campus Well (SJSU) San Jose Water Company (SJWC) South Bay Water Recycling (SBWR) South Campus Well (SJSU) Water Retailers: SJSU SJWC Back-up potable to SJSU RW provider
Chronology Where to start. Campus has had source wells since the 1940 s or before. Main campus has (6) interties to SJWC, (3) potable, (3) RW 2000 Reclaimed Water used in Central Plant Cooling Tower 2001 Reclaimed Water at South Campus athletic fields 2003 King Library Built dual plumbed 2007 Reclaimed Water main in San Fernando by SJWC 2011 In March SJSU Connects King Library to San Fernando 2011 In September SJSU Connects Campus Irrigation 2013 Target for Steam Make-Up Feed
Central Plant Recycled water approved 2000 Recycled water used as make-up water for cooling towers Four-year re-certification complete it 2010, in discussion with SBWR modifications made to procedure because all pipe is above ground and connections visible. Increased effluent impacts peak discharge and fee s 2013 project will convert boiler make up with filtration and chemical treatment only
South Campus Recycled water approved 2001 Spartan Stadium, Athletic Fields Installed three phases, completed in 2008
Map of South Campus sign at every entrance sign at every entrance and by picnic areas
2007 South Campus Issues Drawings needed Piping Schedule 40 Groundwater well Site signage
South Campus Lessons Learned Drawings needed prepared drawing at south campus, as built irrigation at main campus Piping i Schedule 40 concern was over pressurization, many pipe types on main campus
South Campus Lessons Learned Water Wells Code of Regulations, Title 22, Article 4, Section 60310 Groundwater Well Aquitard exists Annular seal extends to aquitard Well is housed Surface water drains away University approves 50 no buffer zone South Campus has RW adjacent, Main Campus has potable adjacent
South Campus Lessons Learned Signage Conduct survey Some signage in place at south campus, added more Main campus started with signs in core, approved to only place at perimeter
Main Campus Existing irrigation areas Signage, when to add and when not Eating areas convert to drip Edible gardens site supervisor training i Remove known cross connections and above grade appurtenances Cross-connection

Cross-Connect Connect One Way Test of Irrigation Step One is remediate cross connections Step two is shut off irrigation and turn on every controller check for water, at same time check pressure in every building Construct Improvements Repeat One Way Test of Irrigation Present Annual Cross Control Surveys
Main Campus Schedule February to May 2011 remediate cross-connections at 23 sites, remove 90 hose bibs on 23 buildings, replace lids and add hundreds of valve tags May and June complete first one way test and assemble annual test forms April 2011 submit DPH Plans, conduct bidding June to July 2011 Construct Improvements August to September 2011 perform final one way test September 2011 final request for ARRA reimbursements
Summary Staff Development important - - forces you to know your system Public Education - - tie to sustainable operations Currently used in Cooling Tower, South Campus, King Library Main campus conversion in 2011 (ARRA funded project) Financial Benefits net difference of $3.75/ccf typical For example main Campus Irrigation will save Annual Sewer Savings $ 94,000/yr Annual Pumping Savings (net cost for recycled water) $ 68,000/yr Close cooperation with SBWR, SJWC, DPH keeps increasing recycled water use at SJSU! $162,000/yr
