Support for Mental Health and Wellbeing Mental health is about how we cope with life s stresses and strains. We all haves days when small things feel overwhelming and we need some help and support. Our mental health is affected by a number of factors including social, economic, environmental and biological causes. It is also influenced by our ability to talk about problems and find the right kinds of support. This information has been produced to make it easier to find support available for patients living in the Great Horton area. Bradford and Airedale Mental Health Advocacy Group User-led mental health organisation providing independent advocacy support, helping people to say what they want, secure their rights, represent their interests and obtain the services they need. Advocacy for anyone suffering mental ill health or mental distress at Lynfield Mount Hospital, Moorlands View, Airedale Centre for Mental Health or within the community across Bradford and Airedale. Statutory advocacy services for people subject to sections under the Mental Health Act and for people who are unable to make specific life-changing decisions (assessed as lacking capacity) under the Mental Capacity Act. Link Project feeding back views of service users and carers about the services they receive in to service planning. Training and support for people who wish to be volunteer advocates. It works with a very diverse array of local people and groups, providing a range of engaging and highly stimulating environmental activities. It has a number of outdoor food-growing sites across the district including allotment spaces in the Haycliffe Lane, Scotchman Road and Queen's Road areas and at Wibsey Park Community Garden, which hosts healthy eating sessions, social therapeutic horticulture sessions and group growing activities. It provides a Bradford-wide information service (recently awarded the Information Standard) and an emergency planning service, giving carers peace of mind and reassurance should an unpredictable incident occur. Assists people on an ongoing basis as well as those in crisis. One-to-one counselling is available at the group or the client's own home, in addition to a 24-hour telephone answering service. All bereaved people are welcome at the weekly support group, which meets at Great Horton Methodist Church Wednesdays 2:00-3:30. Volunteers are required to undertake care of bereavement counselling training. Leaflets are available by request. This consists of various therapeutic and recreational activities; learning and volunteering opportunities; trips out; men- and women-only groups. The organisation also offers a health and wellbeing service providing a range of activities in the community to help people maintain mental wellbeing. Provides therapeutic and support groups, drop-in groups, ESOL classes (via external organisations), advice sessions, advocacy, information and outreach. Polish Befriending Service 17 Edmund Street, Bradford BD5 0BH This befriending and outreach service provides support for Polish and European communities. An outreach service is provided by two outreach officers. The Polish Community Centre runs on Wednesdays and social day care on Fridays. On the third Monday of each month there is a wellbeing cafe. Services include befriending, volunteering and training opportunities. The organisation is aimed at adults and young people from BME communities. Support available includes art-based activities, group relaxation sessions and a computer class. It also offers a range of complementary therapies, a counselling service and a headwear for hair loss service. There is access to welfare rights advice and a drop-in information service. It offers free counselling to carers over 50, caring for a family member, partner or friend who is confused or suffering from dementia, is frail, disabled or has mental health or substance misuse problems. Counselling can help carers deal with difficult feelings such as guilt, anger or resentment and also enable them to look at their own health and wellbeing and plan for the future. Relate may

also be able to arrange for a sitter from the Time Out team to sit with your loved one whilst you attend sessions.
