2 Sunderland Psychological Wellbeing Service provides a range of therapeutic support delivered in Primary Care Centres, GP practices and community settings. Who is Sunderland Psychological Wellbeing Service for? The service is for people aged 16 years and over who present with mild to moderate depression and anxiety disorders. Including: Mild to moderate depression Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Stress/Work related stress Relationship difficulties Family stress Loss/Adjustment disorder Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Agoraphobia Health Anxiety Social Anxiety Panic Disorder Specific Disorder Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Coping with illness/ chronic conditions Anger problems (where eating disorders anxiety and/or depression are also present) Eating disorders We also offer general mental health assessment and advice. If you have any doubt about the suitability of our service for your patient, our staff are happy to discuss this with you. 2

3 Services available Self-Help Classes The self-help classes are weekly sessions for 4-5 weeks. We offer a wide range of self-help classes (lasting minutes per class and running over a period of 3-5 weeks) including: Depression, Panic, Stress Control, Anger, Relaxation, Sleep, Post-Natal and Depression. We also offer a once only 90 minute Well Woman Workshop. This class is designed to assist women to self manage their pre-menstrual problems. Guided Self Help Individual work utilising self-help materials. Appointments are by telephone or face to face for up to 6 sessions. Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPN s) CPN service providing assessment and a range of treatments for depression and anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) One to one interventions for depression and anxiety difficulties using a formulation driven CBT approach for up to 16 sessions. Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) IPT is a treatment for depression focusing on interpersonal relationships in a context of dispute, role change, grief or isolation. 3

4 Services available Eye Movement Desensitisation Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy EMDR for trauma. Much of the mind s natural coping mechanism occurs during Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep. This therapy utilises this natural process in order to successfully treat traumatic symptoms. Military Veterans Wellbeing Group A 12 week psycho-educational programme offering an introduction to emotional wellbeing for ex-members of the armed forces. Counselling for Carers Counselling to assist with creating a healthy balance caring and other aspects of life. Employment Support Advisors A service providing advice about training and employment opportunities for people with depression and anxiety. Couple Therapy Counselling for couples where one of the partners is experiencing depression and this is causing problems in relationship; provided in partnership with RELATE. As our service is part of the Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust we can assist with referrals to other services within the Trust. We are not able to offer support with housing and employment issues. Please refer to the appropriate agency. 4

5 How to refer to Sunderland Psychological Wellbeing Service Patients can self refer on Fax referral line: Please note that information sent to the Trust via is sent at your own risk. GP and professional referrals may be made by fax, telephone or post. The referral should include: Referrer s name, address and contact details Patient s name, address, date of birth, telephone number NHS number (if known) Brief description of the problem and previous treatment Risk information (self-harm history, suicidal intent, ideation or harm to others ) Current medication 5

6 Sunderland Psychological Wellbeing Service is happy to advise and discuss referrals. People presenting with the following diagnosis would not be suitable for the service. A referral to the secondary care mental health teams may be more appropriate. Please contact us for further advice. Disorders which may be unsuitable for Sunderland Psychological Wellbeing Service Bipolar disorder Acute psychotic symptoms Complex eating disorders Schizophrenia Mania Major drug or alcohol problems Personality disorders (where this is the primary focus) Complex presentation/disorder which may require care co-ordination Significant issues in regard to risk to self and others People presenting with high risk/high distress requiring urgent assistance should be discussed with the crisis team on
