Make Some Noise is always looking for the next generation of music leaders. We want to open doors for young musicians who can share their skills with others. Not only does this lead to work opportunities for young people who have come through our projects, but it also gives younger participants a role model close to their own age, showing what they can achieve in music. We employ trainee leaders on all our projects, some of whom are young musicians from Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire. Our Youth Liaison Officer also runs a Young Leaders scheme which leads to Arts Award silver or gold qualifications and includes workshop skills training. Two young DJs Tom and Mark used their new skills to run sessions at youth centres around Cannock Chase. Youth workers were impressed that the young leaders were able to engage a group of girls who were usually reluctant to take part. Both found the scheme helped them improve their own musical skills too. Make Some Noise Ambassador, Samantha is a singer and performer who also took part in a variety of our projects. Now growing in confidence and involved in our Young Leaders programme, she shares her love of music with others. Teenage years are tough, and I find music to be an escape. I always get satisfaction when shy people come to our workshops and work on doing something they love. EXPLORING NEW MUSICAL STYLES dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise gives young people the chance to discover exciting new musical worlds. We want to break down barriers to musical styles which might be unfamiliar and challenging. We believe young people should not be restricted by the limits of the music they know and like so far. Make Some Noise can introduce them to musical composition of other cultures, or classical forms like opera. Our Junknazium project invited pupils from a primary school to compose their own musical material by turning junk yard scrap into instruments. Using the theme passport to the world the song created by the children was then performed at the school and the Victoria Hall in Hanley. Through our Youth Operatunity programme, employing some of the most dynamic and inspiring music leaders in their field, Make Some Noise helped three young groups create their own short operas on the theme of teenage fears. The project culminated in the unique theatrical production that was FrightFest. Youth Operatunity is breaking the myths that opera is a form of expression only available to rich people. USING MUSIC TO INSPIRE dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise s vision is that the lives of children and young people in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent will be significantly enhanced by high quality opportunities to make music. Make Some Noise believes music inspires young people, and for many is also a catalyst for positive change. We explore innovative approaches that work towards better access to music for young people. Our core business falls into three categories: Music Making: We make it happen. Since 2001 we have worked with over 15,000 children and young people to make music of many styles. Make Some Noise manages or commissions experienced music leaders to work in a wide range of settings for example with babies & toddlers, with challenging or excluded young people, with families, in schools or theatres, in youth or community venues. Leadership: We support our music leaders to develop their musical and workshop skills, through training and advice, so they can offer the highest quality musical experiences to young people. We also help young musicians to get started in sharing their leading skills. Information and Advocacy: We want these opportunities to be sustainable, so we work to convince all our partners of the benefits and impact that music making can have on the children and young people they work with, and to raise funds for future work. USING MUSIC TO ENRICH FAMILY LIFE dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise brings music making to children and their families, in school and after-school. Music is not just a subject in the school curriculum. It is a fun, rewarding activity helping children learn, create and work together to achieve. In after-school clubs, playtimes, lunchtimes and family learning days, Make Some Noise works with schools, extended schools co-ordinators and family learning teams, to run singing, composition, song writing, and instrumental activities. Make Some Noise provides opportunities for children and young people to engage in positive extended school activities across Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire. These sessions enable children to focus on musical activities such as improvisation, composition, vocal work and technology. Our Sing Up Burton project has seen singing leaders working regularly in 15 schools in the town to make singing a daily part of school life. Three new vocal leaders have been trained, and experts have visited from around the country to share their songs and techniques. We use talented leaders with the skills to work with a variety of age groups, including parents and children together. Make Some Noise songwriting and digital music workshops for families can bring music to community centres, libraries or art galleries. The families commented on the opportunity to just have fun together. Everyone participated brilliantly and it was good to see children with a mixture of ages and abilities getting on and having a very positive experience. Parents seemed genuinely as keen as the young people to have a go. This really did give a great sense of togetherness with the idea of music creation. EARLY START FOR A LASTING IMPACT dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise believes music making can never start too early. From birth, children can relate to rhythm, tone and pulse, responding to music with keen attention and movement. Not only is music great fun for children, but it also helps develop motor skills, speech, note pitching, rhythm, counting, turn taking, and listening skills. Music can help parent and child bonding too. Make Some Noise s Early Years music programmes train child care workers, parents and musicians to feel confident in leading music activities with children. Experienced music leaders offer fun music sessions in a nursery setting, combined with training workshops for childcare staff and parents. Staff or carers can then start to lead the music, with observation and support. Activities include songs, clapping games, free expression with instruments, and movement to music. Instrument packs are supplied. Working with highly experienced and renowned early years musicians, Make Some Noise delivers high quality music programmes in childcare settings across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Partners include Children s Centres, Staffordshire County Council Early Years Childcare Unit, Stoke Early Years Development Childcare Partnership, City Music and Performing Arts Service and Staffordshire Community and Learning Partnership. MUSIC MAKING FOR ALL dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise offers opportunities for young people in youth and community venues. Music is always near the top of the list when young people are asked what they like to do in their leisure time. Make Some Noise works with youth and community centres to offer workshops open to all young people in their local area. We target priority areas where large numbers suffer poverty or isolation, for example parts of Stoke-on-Trent which are in the most deprived areas in England, or rural Staffordshire villages where it s hard for young people to get to activities. Music making in youth centres close to where they live provides a fantastic creative outlet for young people, giving them alternatives to boredom and street life. Make Some Noise s Sound Check programme is delivered by highly skilled professional musicians in youth centres around Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent. Teenagers have the chance to learn instruments or improve their playing, as well as working on song writing, digital composition, performing and promoting gigs. Each venue is provided with a kit of instruments stored at the youth centre. Young people taking part also have the chance to work towards Arts Award, Youth Achievement and Duke of Edinburgh awards. Sound Check in Cheadle has been a great success. Young people who took part last year are now giving peer support to newcomers and getting involved in performing with them. Several different bands have come out of the project. It s raised aspirations and brought groups from two rival high schools in the town to work together. MUSIC MAKING WITH YOUNG PEOPLE AT RISK dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise works with young people in challenging situations. Music inspires young people, and many relate to the world through their music. Often youngsters excluded from school, on the edge of crime, or separated from their families need new and creative activities to get them learning and working with others. Music making can also be a great way for young people experiencing mental health issues to express themselves and get involved in something positive and rewarding. Working with Children in Care teams, Pupil Referral Units, Youth Offending Institutions, Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, Make Some Noise runs creative music workshops led by skilled music leaders. Our SoundProof project for example, provides a great opportunity for young people to express themselves through lyrics, produce their own beats using professional software, and compose an entire pop, rap or dance track from scratch. As they get to grips with music technology they learn transferable IT skills, as well as creating new music, gaining a boost in self esteem, and learning to enjoy learning. The young people work towards the Arts Award, which gives them an accreditation for their music achievements, a real step forward in getting back to school, or on to college or work. SoundProof at CEDARS Pupil Referral centres was well targeted and very successful. The leaders worked well with some very vulnerable children, emotionally, behaviourally and socially disaffected. DEVELOPING PROFESSIONAL MUSIC LEADERS dynamic music making with young people

Make Some Noise works with experienced and new music leaders, to help them improve their skills and confidence. Make Some Noise works with over 30 musicians each year on projects with a wide range of children and young people, from toddlers to older teens, and families. The well being and confidence of the musicians leading our work is a high priority. We offer the chance to observe others leading workshops, to lead in a trainee role with support and feedback, and to take the lead on projects from start to finish. The Make Some Noise Ensemble was set up in 2008 to celebrate the musicianship and enthusiasm of a core group of 7 musicians, who have the chance to play and compose together in a relaxed setting. SoundProof and Sound Check music leaders are all trained as Arts Award advisors, so they can now support young people in gaining their awards via the regular music workshops. Make Some Noise is a partner in MusicLeader West Midlands which offers one to one advice, group development sessions, training courses and online resources. We are also a partner in developing community artists throughout Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire, through a programme called Partners in Participatory Arts. These networks give us access to a wealth of opportunities for our musicians to flourish and find opportunities.
