Keeping Your World Connected... DATA CENTRE PROTECTED POWER STRATEGY

About Borri... Borri Ltd is an independent power protection company which works closely with its sister brand Borri S.p.A based in Italy, manufacturing and supplying highefficiency Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems. Borri S.p.A has been manufacturing in Italy for over 75 years, has a turnover in excess of 80 million euros with offices and distributors across the globe, providing customers with an unparalleled range of products and services. In the UK, Borri provide full turnkey UPS solutions, electrical infrastructures and SLA driven maintenance contracts to over 2,000 customer sites in a variety of sectors, from academia to manufacturing. Why choose Borri? With over 80 years experience in designing and manufacturing sophisticated, high specification UPS solutions, Borri consistently delivers firstclass power protection, ultimate reliability and superior efficiency levels. Our experience in demanding industries such as petrochemical, offshore and industrial applications has empowered us to meet the most exacting standards. This precision engineering and painstaking attention to detail has been carried over to the extensive work we now carry out within the IT and data centre industry. Renowned for first-class design and meticulous manufacturing procedures, Borri UPS solutions installed within data centre environments can still provide trouble free operation 20 years after the original commissioning. >> Protection always comes first The role of a UPS is to provide essential back-up power, to safeguard computerised infrastructure from common electrical threats and to protect critical, irreplaceable and confidential data files. It is therefore paramount that protective capabilities of a UPS are considered the priority in any purchasing decision. Our message to all business is Do not compromise Any UPS system installed in an organisations data centre should offer the highest levels of protection available. With disturbances to the electrical supply being one of the major causes of IT downtime, the UPS system is regarded as the most critical infrastructure device in the data centre. Interruption to electrical supply can cost organisations hundreds of thousands of pounds per hour in lost revenues and productivity. In an environment where electrical disturbances and transients are a daily occurrence, it is vital for data centres to be fully protected so any significant disruption can be avoided. 2

DATA CENTRE PROTECTION >> How does efficiency fit in? Efficiency and cost savings are becoming as equally important in decision making criteria as operational requirements and design characteristics in the modern data centre. Data centre owner/operators are being pressurised to choose UPS systems, not purely on their protective capabilities but also on lowest capital expenditure, size, aesthetics and how much energy it uses. Borri fully embraces the demands for higher efficiency, lower running costs and reduced C02 emissions and we fully understand the demands organisations have to reduce costs without compromising the protective capabilities of the UPS. >> The best of both worlds Borri has been a traditional manufacturer of power protection products for nearly 80 years, and as such, its data centre UPS systems have been designed to truly offer the highest levels of protection to the connected IT layer. B9000FXS 200-300KVA B9000FXS 60-160KVA As Borri continue to firmly advocate the benefits of transformer based UPS design, a design which we strongly believe delivers the highest levels of back-up power protection, we have also managed to achieve superior levels of efficiency and significantly reduce running costs. The best of both worlds: Ultimate UPS power protection and efficiency without compromise. >> High efficiency Maximum protection Borri s FXS series delivers industry leading levels of efficiency for a transformer-based UPS design. The B9000FXS and B9600FXS have independent TUV certification, proving total efficiencies in excess of 95 percent at only part load, whilst running in permanent Online Double Conversion mode. Our UPS systems operate at the highest levels of efficiency available for permanent Online Double Conversion mode with transformer protection. Operating in real life environments, we will fully advocate that the loss of 1-2 percent efficiency against an offline or eco mode is a sacrifice worth making to ensure ultimate protection to the connected IT layer. 3

>> Ultra High efficiency Pushing the boundaries Whilst Borri firmly urges users to consider protection over all other deciding factors, we also believe that data centre owner/operators need a choice. In the face of rocketing energy costs and political pressures to be the greenest, we know some operators will look at risk vs reward and some may be prepared to push the boundaries to achieve even greater levels of efficiency. As an innovative, forward thinking manufacturer of sophisticated UPS solutions, our FXS high efficiency features are now built in, as standard, to all of our data centre UPS systems. Borri s Smart Online (SOL) FXS package of features allows the user to increase efficiency of the UPS beyond 95 percent and achieve industry leading levels of efficiency. The SOL feature intelligently monitors the quality of power supplied, and chooses the most efficient operating mode based on the environmental conditions at the time. Unlike other UPS systems, SOL allows the user to select how and when it is to operate in a high-efficiency, direct line mode. Importantly, data centre operators can take full control, consideration can be now be given to the power output, day-today energy consumption and environmental impact, as the FXS upgrade gives data centre operators the flexibility as to whether they operate in On-line Double Conversion (VFI) for complete protection or run Smart Online mode for even higher efficiency. The flexibility of the system allows for this decision to be constantly reviewed and changed as required by the data centre. >> The protected power strategy For small data centres Small data centres, computer rooms, wiring closets however such locations are classified, these are more often than not treated differently to larger data centre facilities. Whatever the size of the location, they still house critical IT services and store valuable, if not priceless, company and customer information. Therefore it is important that power protection strategies for such facilities are carefully considered. We tend to see the UPS strategy in such facilities to follow a pay as you grow methodology procuring rack based UPS systems as a new server or new rack enclosure is installed. In very small quantities of UPS or where the connected load is less critical, such power strategies can work really well, however as facilities organically grow the management of this type of distributed UPS strategy can be very difficult. Often these UPS systems have no remote monitoring functionality so the user is only aware of a problem either when in front of the UPS of when impacting the IT services. Regular preventative maintenance procedures are relatively expensive for smaller UPS and are often overlooked. 4

DATA CENTRE PROTECTION >> Recommended UPS For small data centres Data centers around the globe are likely to consume 19% more energy next year than in 2011, according to a report from DatacenterDynamics. BORRI B8000FXS 10kVA - 40kVA 3 PHASE As the units are typically user-installed, the likelihood of accidental or even malicious disconnection of UPS or connection to the IT load is heightened. On top of this, in most instances such UPS systems are significantly less efficient than a larger centralised UPS, therefore making the data centre more costly to run, potentially consuming more than 25% more power than the IT layer alone. Borri strongly recommends that a well-designed and robust protected power strategy should be implemented in small data centres, either a retrofit to an existing facility or for new build facilities. Having a centralised UPS system offers significant advantages in terms of management, monitoring, redundancy and significantly reduces annual maintenance programmes ensuring the UPS system is regularly inspected and tested alerting to current or potential pending issues. The innovative design of the Borri B8000 FXS makes it one of the most technologically advanced UPS of its kind. Exclusively developed by Borri, the FXS series delivers an advanced combination of low input current distortion, unity power factor input, high overall efficiency and maximum load protection ensuring ultimate power quality. BORRI B500 B500EVO 6-10kVA 10-20kVA SCALABLE SINGLE PHASE Incorporating Borri s Online Double Conversion Technology, the new B500 and B500 EVO series are extremely low maintenance and have been designed as a true easy parallel UPS solution. The B500 range was developed around the highest level of protection, this means that the output is VFI (Voltage & Frequency Independent) allowing the critical load power to be constantly maintained by the UPS inverter. 5

A survey by the organizers of Data Centre World conducted a survey of 6000 IT Decision makers, 71% have replaced inefficient equipment, however 76% have confirmed their Data Centres will be using more electricity in 2012. >> Large data centre Greater potential to save The larger the data centre, the greater potential for energy waste, and therefore the greatest potential to realise significant cost savings and carbon reduction. Cooling solutions in the data centre have been, for many years now, a high priority and data centre owner/operators have embraced new designs and technologies investing in changes to improve overall data centre efficiency and improved PUE. But there is more to do The data centre UPS System provides a fantastic opportunity to further increase a data centre facilities efficiency, and therefore PUE. A simple replacement of an older technology with a high efficiency UPS, such as a Borri UPS, can easily yield 10-20% improvement in efficiency and significantly more for a redundant UPS solution running at very low % loads. When we consider the large amount of energy being consumed by the IT layer in the data centre 24 x 7 x 365, such an efficiency improvement can deliver massive savings. The savings alone can achieve an ROI of a full replacement UPS Solution in less than 2 years! However, efficiency can sometimes come at a cost, and often a cost too high to bear. Unfortunately as the size of the data centre grows the impact of any outage can become unthinkable. Recent high profile failures have proved that outages sometimes are immeasurable. In many instances high efficiency means reduced protection. The once de facto standard of Online Double Conversion topology for mission critical applications such as data centres is an increasingly grey area with the introduction of certain high efficiency UPS solutions advocating a normal mode of operation as Offline or Line Interactive. Therefore the balance between efficiency and availability are competing challenges faced by all Data Centre owner/operators today making the correct choice of UPS an incredibly difficult decision. 6

DATA CENTRE PROTECTION Why not make that decision a little easier? The Borri portfolio of high efficiency UPS systems are built to operate in full VFI online double conversion mode, from 60kVA are complete with an isolation transformer, to ensure the highest level of protection to your connected load and have been independently certified to operate with an overall efficiency greater than 95% at part load. This is truly efficiency without compromise and the perfect balance of efficiency and availability. Organisations have never relied more on their IT Services than they do today. Outages of service, no matter what length, cannot be tolerated in today s aggressive commercial world. The data centre, for most organisations is their most valuable and critical asset. Well suited to large data centre applications, the B9600 FXS series from 400kVA is scalable in UPS modules up to a configuration of 6.4MVA. Two independent groups of UPS can be synchronised together to provide zero break transfer for a Tier four UPS design. With independent certification showing overall efficiency of greater than 95% at part load while running in Online Double Conversion, the large data centre can enjoy complete protection without compromising the requirement to drive down PUE. >> Recommended UPS For large data centres BORRI B9000FXS 60kVA - 300kVA BORRI B9600FXS 400kVA - 800kVA The innovative design of the Borri B9000 FXS and B9600 FXS range makes it one of the most technologically advanced UPS of its kind. Exclusively developed by Borri, the FXS series delivers an advanced combination of low input current distortion, unity power factor input, high overall efficiency and maximum load protection ensuring ultimate power quality. 7
