Introduction The financial services industry across the globe is undergoing strategic transformation as the focus shifts from short term profitability to long term success. The sustainability challenge i.e. embedding environmental, social, economic and financial aspects in the organisation s DNA is now increasingly recognised as the most critical challenge that the financial institutions face today. In these times of historic change, when the increasing regulations, growing competitive pressures, widespread digitisation, volatile market conditions and rising environmental and social concerns are reshaping financial industry s landscape across the continents, there is a need for stakeholders to come together and jointly address the sustainability challenge. The Conference The overall objective of the Global Sustainable Finance Conference is to contribute in sustainability transformation of the financial services industry by providing an international forum to key stakeholders from across the world for sharing knowledge and experiences and for working together for a strong, fair, safe and resilient financial services industry that works in harmony with the natural environment. The conference aims to address the following areas. This global forum was launched in 2011 by EOSD 1 and ADFIAP 2 in cooperation with the City of Karlsruhe under the auspices of the World Federation of Development Finance Institutions (WFDFI) 3 and was endorsed by the United Nations Environment Program Financial Institutions (UNEP FI) 4. Global Issues that are Re-Shaping Financial Services Sector Environmental Change» Global warming, loss of biodiversity and unprecedented natural disasters» How environmental change is causing financial and reputational risks for banks, other financial intermediaries and public and private equity investors! The Unfolding Challenges Resource shortages, growing social discontent, changing regulatory environment, fierce competition, fast track digitisation, high volatility in markets and other global issues that are changing the way financial institutions operate Stepping Back A Look at the BIG Picture 1 EOSD is a specialized organisation for developing and executing sustainability strategies, projects, programs and initiatives that contribute in implementing the EU strategy for sustainable development. 2 ADFIAP is the focal point of all development banks and other financial institutions engaged in the financing of sustainable development in the Asia Pacific region. It has 131 member institutions in 45 countries. 3 WFDFI is the global focal point for institutions providing and promoting sustainable development finance. It has 328 member institutions in 154 countries and territories around the world. 4 UNEP FI is a platform associating United Nations and the financial sector globally. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland.
