ARTS, INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS CLA Course Descriptions Performing Arts Program Description Hermiston High School s Performing Arts cluster skill sets are designed to prepare students for a variety of fields in music after they graduate from high school. This program is intended to give students a step up in the areas of music education, music performance, and music composition. Music will be approached from multiple angles with the many performance opportunities that HHS offers. It will also be approached in the academic setting where students will learn about music history, ear training, and how to analyze written music. Music (Instrumental) Courses 8500HS Concert Band Prerequisites: Prior band experience in middle school. This ensemble is for intermediate-level high school band students. These students will learn how to be more proficient players by playing high quality band literature that will improve their sight-reading skills, technical abilities, and tone production. Students will listen to professional musicians in order to provide a clear image of what their instrument should sound like. This ensemble will compete in local and regional contests. 8505HS Marching Band/Pep Band Prerequisites: Prior band experience in middle school. Must be enrolled in Concert Band or Wind Ensemble. The marching band is the most visual aspect of the band program. It is a high energy performance ensemble that performs at all home football and basketball games. Students will learn how to march and play at the same time. They will also learn about the esprit de corps that marching bands are so famous for. This group always makes a positive impact on the atmosphere at home games. Some evening rehearsals may be required. This ensemble will compete in local and regional contests. 8510HS Wind Ensemble Prerequisites: Audition Based. Prior band experience in high school or middle school. This is the most advanced concert ensemble. The focus will be advanced high school and collegiate level repertoire. Emphasis will be placed on individual sight-reading, advanced technical skills, and musicality. Students will have a clear understanding of what their instrument should sound like and will strive for that sound. This class will be offered for a dual credit opportunity. This ensemble will compete in local and regional contests. 8520HS Jazz Band Beg Prerequisites: Must be enrolled in Concert Band or Wind Ensemble. This band serves as an introduction to the large jazz ensemble genre. Emphasis is placed on scale reading and chord reading and applying those skills to improvisation. Students will memorize melodies and chord changes, and learn how to play meaningful solos. Students will also explore a variety of different jazz standards from many genres.
8530HS Jazz Band 1 Prerequisites: Audition Based. Must be enrolled in Concert Band or Wind Ensemble. This is the premier jazz ensemble at the high school made up of the most advanced musicians. Students will learn to apply scales and chords to improvisation and to songs. Students will learn a number of jazz standards as well as modern jazz literature. This ensemble will compete in local and regional contests. This class may be offered for college credit. 8540HS Percussion Ensemble Prerequisites: Prior percussion experience in middle school. This ensemble is structured for any music student who would like to pursue percussion studies. Advanced percussion students will explore the vast realm of percussion ensemble repertoire that will present them with unique challenges that they may not face in a band setting. Beginning percussion students will learn how to play many of the standard concert percussion instruments and will also perform quality ensemble literature on a regular basis. This ensemble will compete in local and regional contests. During the Fall term this class will be utilized to rehearse marching band cadences and halftime music. This class is required for percussion students. Music (Choral) Courses 8550HS Music Appreciation Prerequisites: Prior experience in music preferred. Resulting from a blend of classroom lectures, audio examples, video examples and live performances, this course will familiarize the student with the many aspects of music. Material to be covered will include the elements of music (melody, harmony, form, rhythm, musical notation, etc.), history of Western art music, jazz and the origins of American popular music. This class is principally a survey of Western art music designed for today s youth. 8610HS Chamber Choir Prerequisites: Audition Based This class meets for 90 minutes, 2-3 days per week (Block Schedule). Any sophomore and above looking to take their musicianship to the next level is welcome to audition for this mixed choir. Focus will be on increasing one s musical knowledge and musicianship, furthering one s proper vocal technique, and exploring the next level of choral literature. This choir participates in the state choral competition, so attendance not only for concerts, but festivals and competitions is required. 8600HS Concert Choir Prerequisites: Audition Based. This class meets for 90 minutes, 2-3 days per week. Anyone wanting to sing is welcome to join this mixed choir. Focus will be on revisiting the fundamentals of music, learning healthy vocal technique, and exploring choral literature. 8620HS Con Brio Prerequisites: Audition Based. Must be enrolled in Chamber Choir. This class meets for 90 minutes, 2-3 days per week (Block Schedule). This ensemble is for the top female musicians. Focus will be on developing vocal technique, music literacy and performing advanced literature, especially tailored for women.
8630HS Majazzty Prerequisites: Audition Based. Must be enrolled in Chamber Choir. This is the premier vocal jazz ensemble at the high school made up of the most advanced musicians. Students will learn improvisation and advanced level 3+ songs. Students will learn a number of jazz standards as well as modern jazz literature. This ensemble will compete in local and regional contests. This class may be offered for college credit. Drama (Acting) Courses 1400HS Drama Production Prerequisites: None Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of acting through theatre games, improvisation, monologue work, and one act plays. Students will also be introduced to theatre mechanics; costuming, make-up and stagecraft and the history of the theatre will also be touched upon. Application Instructions 1. Students can apply for the Music (Instrumental) cluster skill set through Paul Dunsmoor in Room 107 in the spring prior to the school year that they would like to start the program. 2. Students can apply for the Music (Choral & Acting) cluster skill sets through Joshua Rist in Room 109 in the spring prior to the school year that they would like to start the program. 3. Complete program of study checklist. 4. Complete exit interview and review checklist with music instructors. Requirements to receive a Completion Certificate, Graduation Stole: Performing Arts Programs: Students must earn a B grade or higher in each course taken toward the completion of this CLA. Students will complete a performance exam, earning a minimum score of 21/30 in the areas of: sound quality, technique, and musicality as defined by the 2012 OBDA/OSAA Instrumental Evaluation Scale. Students will complete a written reflection in which they will summarize their growth throughout the program. Applicant will submit all materials by the application deadline (graduation year). Deadline for 2014 seniors is April 4, 2014.

8050HS Drawing and Painting 1 Elective grades 9, 10, 11, 12 Credits: - Fees: $10 Prerequisite: None You will explore various drawing techniques using pencil, pen, ink and charcoal and pastels. You will learn to compose designs using the basic elements and principles of design and become aware of contemporary and historical works of art. This class is a prerequisite to Drawing and Painting 2. Students who enjoy doodling, are creative, and are interested in careers such as fashion design, architecture, interior design, and graphic design would benefit from this class. 8055HS Drawing and Painting 2 Credits: - Fees: $15 Prerequisite: Drawing & Painting 1 The emphasis in this class is learning to paint and is taught back to back with Drawing and Painting 1A. You are required to take Drawing 1A first. The student will further develop their understanding of the elements and principles of design. Advancing your techniques in drawing will be explored somewhat but painting techniques and mediums will be emphasized. A history of art will be explored for a better understanding of today s artwork! This class would be beneficial for any student wishing to pursue a possible career in advertising, graphic design, architecture, set design, automotive design and gaming design. 8065HS Drawing and Painting 3 Elective grades 9, 10, 11, 12 - Fees: $15 Prerequisite: Drawing & Painting 2 Honors Credit This class is a continuation of Drawing and Painting 2 with further exploration of drawing and painting techniques. Historical and contemporary art is studied for a better understanding of today s artwork! This class would be beneficial for students wishing to express themselves in a creative way. Drawing and Painting 3 also can assist those students who wish to develop their portfolio in preparation for college entrance. Students interested in career areas such as advertising, graphic design architecture, and fashion design would greatly benefit from this class. Students will move from static web page development into creating dynamic web pages for user interactivity. The Photography class provides a solid foundation for those looking to learn the industry-standard program Adobe Photoshop. Real-world, practical examples offer opportunities to take digital photos to obtain a well-rounded understanding of digital photography. The Photography class is a valuable resource that will give students the confidence they need to edit images with skill and ease using Photoshop.
