H. DUANE BIERLEIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP The DUANE AND DOROTHY BIERLEIN FOUNDATION has established a scholarship to honor the memory of Duane Bierlein. Duane was the president of Schaefer & Bierlein at the time of his death and the scholarship has been created to present an opportunity to a deserving student. Duane Bierlein was born in 1923 to a farm family. At that time, the eldest male child was expected to work on and eventually take over the family farm. To that end, Duane completed the eighth grade and quit school in order to work with his father on the farm. WWII was declared and Duane was called on to serve his country in the Navy. Upon returning from the war, Duane realized that farming was not his calling and began working for a local auto dealer as a mechanic/body man. After becoming engaged to Dorothy, he began working for her father at Rummel & Schaefer, an auto dealer selling Dodges and Plymouths. Through the years, he worked his way through all aspects of the mechanical side of the business and eventually became the owner of the entire business. Although being very successful in his own right, Duane always felt that he could have been more successful had he gotten additional formal schooling. Duane was a man of integrity that became a success the old fashioned way, he worked hard for it. This scholarship was established to assist a graduating senior to pursue their educational and career dream in an automotive service related field. Duane always felt that those who chose to earn their living with their hands deserved as much opportunity and respect as any other vocation. Duane s family hopes to keep that vision alive by awarding this scholarship to someone who isn t afraid to keep a little grease under their nails.
