The Fisher of Men St. John Fisher Council 12856 Newsletter Update! Serving the Catholic Communities of St James and St Thomas More February 2013 Vol 7 No 3.2 12 for 12 During the past twelve months, St John Fisher has added twelve new knights, either by transfer or making the decision to become members of our brotherhood. Here are some of their stories.. Samuel Agube Samuel is originally from Nigeria and was born to a very strong catholic family. He is in the USA courtesy of his wife Emem Kenneth Abarah, who is a citizen of the USA by birth. THey have been married for over 13 years and are blessed with three beautiful children- Theresa-13, Mary -12 and Hannah- 6. Samuel is a Production Engineer by profession and works on a contract basis for Nursecore and Atwork healthcare services. Samuel and his family are members of St. James parish and are ardent and unwavering catholic apologists. Sameul s desire to play a bigger role at St James led him to become a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was assisted in that direction by SK Joe Kosikowski. Sam is very proud to be a member of the Knights of Columbus and intends to continue on until receiving his 4 th degree.

Matthew DeMouy Matthew is the son of a Knight, one of four brothers who are Eagle Scouts, and a volunteer at St James for many activities. He graduated from ASU with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and works for General Dynamics in Phoenix. Matthew is currently working on his Master s Degree in Education so he can work as a teacher at either the Community College or High School levels. Growing up in Georgia, Matthew s family are descendants of two French brothers who came to America during the American Revolution. They moved to Arizona in the mid 90 s and live close by St James where they attend Mass. Matthew describes himself as a humble person who lets his accomplishments speak for him. He became a Knight in November of last year and plans to continue to at least full Knighthood. James Epling James became a First Degree Knight last September 10 th, five days later he attained full Knighthood by completing his 2 nd and 3 rd Degrees. Motivated he is and he was just selected as the Knight of the Month for January 2013. James worked several shifts at Cardinal Stadium during the football season, helping out when spaces became available due to others not being able to complete their shift. Brian Ferber A Knight for just over two months, Brian Ferber was recruited by SK Joe Kosikowski at St James. He chairs the Stewardship Committee for St James and is active with St James Youth Ministry. He has been involved in Boy Scouts for many years and is a Vigil member of the Order of the Arrow although he is less active in scouting recently than in the past. Learning his trade in the USAF, Brian has worked for the same company (with 4 company name changes along with a 2500 mile relocation) for 35 years in different capacities but is currently a Customer and Product Support engineer for Honeywell at Sky Harbor. His three children Zach, Katie, and Bree all live in the area. His youngest, Bree, graduated in December from ASU after spending her last semester with an internship in Sydney, Australia. Brian and his wife Allison have been married for 28 years, Allison works as a lead teacher in a Christian Child Day Care Center in downtown Phoenix. They have lived in the area for 16+ years after moving here from upstate Connecticut. Brian plans to continue with his journey into Knighthood by gaining his 2 nd and 3 rd degrees sometime early next month.

Gerry Mendoza Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, Gerry is the manager of Old Dominion Freight Line in Phoenix. Growing up as next door neighbors, Gerry and his wife Ana have been married for 33 years and have two sons, Nicholas and Andrew. Andrew is about to graduate from Culinary School in Scottsdale and Nicholas will graduate from ASU in the spring. Gerry and his family have been in Arizona for 16 years after making the decision to move to a warmer climate. He serves on the Finance Council at St James and chairs the St James Community Festival in April of each year. Gerry s father was a knight and he says he was inspired to become a knight by working with other members of St James on various committees serving St James Families. Bruce Montgomery Bruce Montgomery came to Arizona in 2002 after distinguished careers in the US Forest Service, US Army, US Air Force and Discover Card. He now works at Bel Air Elementary school in the Deer Valley School District, a job he got through his 4 th grade grandson Chase seven years ago. A life time Catholic, Bruce grew up in Idaho where he worked as a Smoke Jumper, fighting forest fires, in the 11 western states and Alaska for the US Forest Service. Drafted into the US Army in the late 60 s he trained as a medic and eventually became a commissioned Medical Staff officer. Unhappy with where the Army wanted to send him, he resigned his commission and joined the US Air Force where he trained as an Air Weapons Controller and spent most of his time either on an AWACS aircraft or in a ( GCI ) Ground Control Instillation where he worked live exercises and drug interdiction services in South America and the Caribbean where getting to work sometimes required that he parachute into the jungle mountain tops where he would remain for several days before returning to his deployed home base. Bruce retired after 24+ years. At St James, Bruce has served on the Liturgical and Finance Committees and Each One Reach One! currently serves as the Mass Coordinator, Eucharist Minister and Lector. Reach out and touch someone by Bruce has 4 children, and 4 grandchildren, one recruiting one new member. Remember, daughter still lives with him along with his grandson our goal is one new member for every and granddaughter. Recruited by John Ingram Sr. he has been a knight since last month. December, he plans to continue his journey until reaching full knighthood.

A YEAR OF CELEBRATION Pope John XXIII came from a humble background. His parents had neither wealth nor fame. They had a gift that far exceeded wealth and fame...it was the gift of faith. The extended family helped this young boy receive an education and thus fostered the gifts of intellect that God gave him in abundance. While being extremely intellectual, Pope John XXIII was also very relational and very comfortable with people but especially ordinary family people just like you and me. He never forgot his humble roots and when he was elevated to the papacy, he helped to initiate Vatican II and simplify many areas of Church liturgy that previously had been very complicated. The biggest gift I believe Vatican II gave us was the gift of the Holy Mass celebrated in the vernacular (the language of the people). Our Holy Father understood the need for people to speak to God in their own language and to pray with the priest in a language they understood and loved. As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Vatican II let us pause to remember this extraordinary man.
