Research activities Participation in 47 research projects, in 27 of them as a Project Leader. Main research areas. Development and application of 1-D, 2-D, depth averaged and 3-D mathematical models, including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) models, for the following cases: 1. 3-D flows in complex hydraulic works (transitions, weirs etc.). 2. Hydrodynamic behaviour and efficiency of water and wastewater treatment units, such as settling tanks, biological reactors, chlorination tanks etc. 3. Hydrodynamic circulation and water quality-pollution (e.g. de-oxygenation, eutrophication) in surface water bodies, such as rivers, lakes, coastal waters, fisheriesaquacultures etc. 4. Application of integrated models within the Water Framework Directive. Integrated models (hydrological-hydrodynamic-water quality-biological). Interactions between surface waters and groundwater and between internal, transitional and coastal waters. Optimisation of monitoring networks. 5. Thermal pollution in coastal areas. Environmental impacts. Optimization of the location of inlet and outlet water works in electricity generation stations. 6. Marine dredging. Environmental impacts. Sediment transport and bed level change. Refilling time of dredge pits. 7. Water renewal in semi-enclosed coastal areas. Flushing culverts. Water renewal time and dissolved oxygen transfer. 8.
