3 Curriculum of the International Master degree programme Material and Energetic Exploitation of Renewable Raw Materials At the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna As at October 1 st, Description of qualification General goals of the field of study This Master study program has an European focus and is based on the idea of a cooperation between the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) and the Technical University Munich, the latter having a university location at Staubing which puts an emphasis on Renewable Recourses. At this center also further partners, mainly such from technical colleges in Germany are engaged in research. The utmost concern of this study program is the scientific, technical and economic qualification for material and energetic use of renewable resources from the fields of agriculture and forestry. The balanced combination of material and energetic uses is regarded as a specific strength which is also true to the fact that it perfectly complements the competences of both partners (TU Munich BOKU). The Master study program is partly held in English, but shall mainly serve German speaking students who wish to address the technical and socio-economical problems of the use of renewable resources on a national or European level. The Master study program has an interdisciplinary structure and provides chemical-biological knowledge, engineering knowledge for the production of raw materials, processing, material and energetic use and conversion respectively, energy management, material sciences, economics, entrepreneurship, marketing, management and soft skills. Fields of activity In their professional fields graduates of the International Master study program for Material and Energetic Exploitation of Renewable Raw Materials focus on scientific engineering and technical solutions for various exploitability of renewable resources with a main focus on wood. The scientific engineering and technical approach is added by socio-economic competences. Profile of requirements Material and Energetic Exploitation of Renewable Raw Materials requires a high level of interdisciplinary and integrative abilities as well as distinct competences in the fields of leading, management and social behaviour. The education and training mediate a synthesis of natural scientific, social, economic and technical competences and knowledge. Special educational goals The present Master study program is comprised of modules which are defined in 2. The education imparts an introduction to natural sciences and economics of renewable resources. A further focus is on process mastering for the exploitability of raw materials and their conversion into energy and material products. Special educational goals are Integral Resource Management, Business 3

4 Administration, Process Technology, Environmental Engineering, Alternative Energy Use, as well as International Business Management and Sustainability. Fields of work Graduates of the Master degree programme of the Master Programme are especially enabled to work in the following fields of work: freelance consulting offices, appraiser in the fields of resource use and environmental technology, production and use of biogenic raw material, in environmental and resource economics, in research and development, in energy and process technology, in environmental engineering and wood and fibre technology; Project management in the sector of renewable resources, in secondary education, in environmental consulting, in technical and administrative planning agencies, national-wide for environmental associations, as consulting engineers and in the field of quality management. 2 Format of the Master degree programme The International Master degree program Material and Energetic Exploitation of Renewable Raw Materials is a joint degree programme based on a collaboration between BOKU, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, and TUM, Technical University, Munich. The instruction language is mainly German, certain courses are held in English. The Master degree programme in and Energetic Exploitation of Renewable Raw Materials comprises four semesters and is made up of 120 ECTS credits including the Master Thesis (28 ECTS). In addition, 2 ECTS for the Master s Thesis seminar have to be completed. Altogether the courses comprise of 92 ECTS credits. Of the total number of 120 ECTS credits 101 are compulsory courses, 15 ECTS credits are optional courses (described in 6) and 4 ECTS credits are free optional courses. Free optional courses can be completed in two ways: 1. by completing courses not mentioned in 6, 2. by gaining ECTS points which may be gained in optional course modules and which exceed the minimum ECTS points of these modules. 5 3 Admission to the Master degree programme Regular students of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna (BOKU) have access to the double degree programme. Students who graduated a professionally linked Bachelor degree programme in Austria or an international university are admitted to the Master degree programme Material and Energetic Use of Renewable Resources. In the course of the verification of equivalency sufficient expertise in the fields of natural sciences, engineering sciences / technology and social- and business sciences have to be provided. A high command of English, which is essential for successful completion of this Master degree programme, has to be proven for admission. Admission to BOKU is accredited by the other partner university. Double Degree candidates are subject to the general regulations, statutory provisions and enrolment requirements of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna. Candidates acquire their admission at the host institution (Technical University Munich) only for those parts of their study program that are held within the accountability of the respective host institution. Regarding the admission process all facilitations are granted that these candidates are entitled to get in the course of the mobility program. Students are liberated from the obligation to pay tuition feeds for those study program parts held at the respective host institution based on reciprocalness. Students have to bear all further costs, including insurance costs themselves. BOKU as well as TU Munich are obligated to inform their Double Degree students on possible scholarships and grants in order to finance their stay at the host institution. Furthermore, they are required to help incoming students searching accommodation. The host institution issues a transcript of records in which all examinations and academic achievements of the Double Degree student at the respective institution are listed. These credits are then taken into account for the final university degree at the home institution. A balanced ratio of admitted male and female students has to be considered. In order to promote the advancement of women at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna the admission of women for this Master degree program shall be advocated. Potential foreign students who are qualified for an admission to this Master degree program shall be motivated to apply and admit to this Master degree program by establishing contact as well as further appropriate actions. 4 Academic qualification The International Master degree programme Material and Energetic Use of Renewable Resources is an engineering degree. In accordance with this classification of engineering degrees, graduates of the Master degree programme of BOKU, the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, will be awarded with the Austrian academic qualification Diplom-Ingenieur of technical sciences, shortened to Dipl.-Ing. or DI (this degree equals the internationally accepted degree Msc Master of Science). 5 Types of courses Courses within this degree are: 1. Lectures (VO): Courses in which portions of an academic discipline and the methods involved are didactically presented. 5

6 2. Practical exercises (UE): Practical exercises are courses which have a factual connection to the relevant lecture and serve to teach specific practical abilities and skills. 3. Excursions (EX): Courses which contribute to the illustration and consolidation of the course material. 4. Practical Training (PR): Courses dedicated primarily to professional scientific education 5. Combined courses: Lectures, practical exercises and excursions can also be combined. For such courses, the regulations given should be used for the relevant sections. Possible combinations: - Lectures with exercises (VU) - Lectures with excursions (VX) 6. Master seminar (SE): Courses dedicated to the scientific discussion and presentation of the work required for the thesis. 7. For courses (which are inherently exam-based) where attendance is compulsory, the course lecturer should make it known, before the beginning of the course, when attendance is required. (Scope of compulsory attendance: UE, SE = 100% ; VU = 30-70%). 8. All courses can also be held outdoors or at companies, as required. 6 Timetable of Courses 1 The program includes the introduction part which consists of six modules and two further special fields, which are made up of three modules each. WS th semester: place of study: free choice Focus: Master thesis Type Name SST ECTS Master thesis and master seminar Master thesis 28.0 SE Master seminar Thesis for the Master degree (1) The thesis for the Master degree constitutes an integral part of the double degree Programme Material and Energetic Exploitation of Renewable Raw Materials and can be written in German or English. (2) The subject of the Master degree thesis must be chosen from a discipline relevant to the Master degree. (3) The university lecturer who suggests the subject chosen for the Master degree thesis is obliged to supervise that student. (4) For the Master thesis the supervision by a BOKU university lecturer and a university lecturer of a partner university is required (Principal of Double Supervision). (5) The Master degree thesis should be submitted to the Dean of the University. (6) 30 ECTS are granted for the Master degree thesis (incl. defence and master seminar). 10

11 8 Graduation requirements The study regulations of BOKU are valid in their current version. For those parts of the Master degree programme completed at co-operating partner universities the examination regulations of the respective university have to be applied. The final examination for the Master degree is taken in two parts. The first part of the final examination for the Master degree comprises the modules detailed in 6 above and is completed with the positive assessment of these courses. The second part of the final examination for the Master degree is a public defence of the Master thesis. For the public defence two examiners have to be nominated and an expert evaluation of the thesis has to be requested. The registration to the second part of the Master degree graduation requires: Positive completion of the courses stated in 6. Positive evaluation of the Master degree thesis. 9 Study fees The legal position concerning the admission to the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, (BOKU) is valid. 11
