How to install Radiance on your computer via a virtual machine This instruction will help to install the lighting simulation tool Radiance on a Windows operated computer. As Radiance runs under Unix/Linux, a virtual machine (VirtualBox) with a Linux version (Ubuntu) will be installed en set up first. Subsequently, Radance will be installed. This installation description is a simple step-by-step instruction, illustrated with multiple print screen images. Getting started 1. Close all programs on your computer 2. Open an Explorer window and create a new folder on your computer (e.g., Radiance in My Documents) 3. Open an internet browser, download the following two files and save them in the new folder (e.g., D:\My Documents\Radiance): a. VirtualBox-3.1.4-56127-Win.exe [±70Mb] (Can be downloaded from http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/downloads, choose Windows Host) b. ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso [±700Mb] (Can be downloaded from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download). Please check that the file downloads correctly (by verifying file size) 4. Close the internet browser. Install VirtualBox 1. Double-click on VirtualBox-3.1.2-56127-Win.exe to install a virtual machine. Follow the instructions on the screen so the application can be installed in a Program Files folder. In case of this warning: temporarily disconnect the computer from the network., click Yes. It will In case of this warming:, click Continue Anyway (-> multiple times!) 2. Leave Start Sun VirtualBox after installation marked, and press Finish. 2
Notes: Set up Ubuntu It is possible you may get the message about a more recent version. You may ignore it and press yes. It is possible you may get a possibility to register for VirtualBox. You may ignore this too and press cancel. 1. After starting Sun VirtualBox, its welcome screen will appear. This window will be shown each time you start Sun VirtualBox. 2. Press New and a new pop-up window will appear. Click on Next. The text on the window requires entering a name (e.g., Ubuntu) for the virtual machine, and choosing an operating system. Select Linux from the drop-down menu. The version will be automatically set to Ubuntu. Then, click Next. 3
Most of the following windows will appear with automatic settings, you do not have to change anything, so continue to click Next. You will encounter a window entitled Welcome to the Create New Virtual Disk Wizard. Click on Next. 4
3. And finally, click Finish. The next window will show an overview of the prepared components. 5
4. Press the Settings button and a new window will open. 5. Next, go to Storage and subsequently to the CD/DVD device (indicated with a little CD symbol. In the drop-down menu on the right side the standard setting is set to Empty :. 6. Choose Host Drive E in the drop-down menu: and subsequently click on the yellow folder symbol right next to it. Another window opens up (Virtual Media Manager). 6
7. Click on Add and go to the folder where you save the ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso file (e.g., D:\My Documents\Radiance), and select this file (press Select ). If the Ubuntu file is damaged, an error message will appear. Otherwise, the file will now be visible in the Virtual Media Manager. Select this file and press Select. 7
8. Check if it says ubuntu-9.10-desktop-i386.iso in de CD/DVD menu, and click OK. In the Storage section of the overview window, the iso-file should be visible as well. 9. Run Ubuntu by pressing Start. 8
10. A couple of Information windows will show up and you can click OK. Note: After using Ubuntu for a longer period of time, you will mark the Do not show this message again box. 11. The installation of Ubuntu will ask a couple of questions, like for example the language of the installation process. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to select the preferred language and press enter. 9
Note: If the mouse is used, for example to select a language, inside the Virtual Machine window, the mouse will be captured and cannot be used in the host machine (the actual Windows computer). To uncapture, press the right Control button (Right Ctrl). 12. In the next window, select (preferably with the down arrow key) Install Ubuntu (second option) and press enter. Note: The screen above might be slightly different, it can show a desktop with two icons, one of them indicating to Install Ubuntu. Click on that icon for the process to start. 13. Again, a couple of choices have to be made. Click on Forward : a. Step 1: language of Ubuntu [English] 10
b. Step 2: region [Europe, Netherlands time] 14. a. Step 3: Keyboard [USA] b. Step 4: Disk space [Erase and use entire disk] c. Step 5: Personal data [ Your Name, choose password, log in automatically] Note: Make sure the password is secure (minimum of 8 digits) and relatively easy to remember d. Step 6: Overview Finally, press Install, and the program will - finally - start to install (This will take a while). After the installation is complete, restart the virtual machine by pressing the button Restart Now. There might be a prompt message indicating to remove the CD and then press Enter. Just press Enter to continue. 14. After the restart, shut down by pressing the power-off button in the right upper corner of the window (containing your virtual computer name, just below the red exit cross): From the menu list, choose Shut down 11
15. Back in the Sun VirtualBox window, go to Settings -> Storage -> CD/DVD (that will indicate the Ubuntu file being loaded) Change the CD/DVD setting to Empty again (to remove the virtual CD). Press OK. 16. Start Ubuntu again by pressing the start button in the VirtualBox. It is normal that the window size resizes during the start up process. Install Radiance 1. In Ubuntu, go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager 2. Enter your Ubuntu password. Close the information window. Continue to the Synaptic Package Manager. 12
3. Go to Search (not Quick search!) on the left side of the menu (down arrow). Or choose Edit Search 4. Enter Radiance as search term in the menu and press Search. 5. The program will suggest 5 packages. Select every one separately and pick Mark for Installation from the menu. In some cases, the Package Manager mentions that additional packages/items will be installed as well. 13
6. The next step is to press the Apply button, and subsequently select To be installed and Apply again. In total there will be 12 packages to be installed. Radiance will be installed. 7. After installation, press Close and close the Synaptic Package Manager window as well. 8. Go to Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal to open a so-called terminal window. 9. Within the terminal window, it shows computername@computername desktop: $ [NOTE: instead of computername the name of your virtual computer is mentioned] 10. Type trad and if all installations went well - a new user interface opens up: The archives shown in the image will appear when Directory is set to the root (only / ) 14
