Participants in the competition will present business cases to a judging panel of investors, IP experts, industry innovation managers and entrepreneurs to compete for seed capital of 10,000. Read about two of the previous competition winners, Droplet and Matopy, below. I really liked how the programme tested knowledge developed through the core modules in team projects, electives, the Final project and in the Ie&D course. the Ie&D course, which is unique to Imperial, is a great way to understand how to apply core business concepts to establish a real fledgling business. David simpson Weekday Executive MBA 2013-15 DropLet MAtopY InnOvATIng WATER Droplet integrates key principles of innovative design, smart application of technology and community capacity-building to deliver clean, safe, drinkable water to school children in Kenya. The team sought to address a global problem with new, innovative solutions in a sustainable way with local sector experts. With more innovative, creative and partner-led solutions across developing markets and local communities, the team conducted detailed local research. They clarified the problem definition, elaborated the design and refined the Droplet solution, ultimately choosing to collaborate with local schools to leverage existing, positive community infrastructure. The final business plan was developed by a team of five MBA students and two Royal College of Art students and won first prize in the 2013 Business Plan Competition. IT S TIME FOR THE WEB TO SpEAK Matopy is the brainchild of Sam Jewell, Research Associate at the Helen Hamlyn Centre at the Royal College of Art, and was brought to market by a multidisciplinary team of four MBA students. Matopy aims to revolutionise the way people interact with the web by applying speech and sound technologies and a more innate way of accessing online content. Matopy turns websites into audio, making them easy to understand and navigate through listening. By using different voices, music and sound effects, the audio experience becomes as rich as the colours, fonts and layouts of the visual web. The product is of great value to individuals with visual impairment. Matopy was one of eight projects entered into the 2012 Business Plan Competition and was awarded the first prize of 10,000. 14 emba@imperial.ac.uk imperial.ac.uk/business-school/emba 15

Santiago, Chile. Global Experience Week 2014, Weekend Executive MBA. Through integrated courses focusing on your personal development, we will help you to identify your future goals and achieve them. We provide you with practical development tools and the opportunity to reflect upon your experiences and devise a plan for your future. Electives The MBA elective portfolio consists of approximately 20 courses across a number of subject areas. Electives provide you with the opportunity to specialise in an area of particular interest or to explore new avenues. Supported by our own experienced faculty, many of the electives include guest lecturers from industry and other academic institutions who impart their unique insights and real-world experience to the class. For a full list of electives, see pages 12-13. Students are able to choose five electives and can apply to sit in on an additional two, for which they will not be assessed. Each elective runs over four days during the spring and summer terms. Electives are offered in two formats to fit into your schedule: 1. Two-week Monday and Tuesday (week 1), Thursday and Friday (week 2) 2. Weekend Thursday afternoon, Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning Whatever you want to achieve from the electives, the MBA team are available to advise and help guide your choice. Electives run subject to sufficient demand and are shared between Executive MBA students from both Weekday and Weekend streams, and the Full-Time MBA cohort. PERSONAL LEADERSHIP JOURNEY The course aims to further help you formulate your career strategy, addressing both short-term and longterm objectives. Our Careers team will work closely with you throughout your MBA to identify not only sectors and functions relevant to your future career path, but also to equip you with the skills and knowledge required to effectively market yourself for a wide range of opportunities. The course emphasises three main and interconnected elements: Careers Strategy will provide a clear foundation on which to formulate your individual career path, whether you re looking to change career, accelerate your current trajectory or pursue entrepreneurial interests. Self-Awareness comprises a range of reflective exercises specifically designed to identify your strengths as an individual and team member, as well as areas for development in terms of your leadership capability and wider professional effectiveness. You will be supported by trained executive coaches who will facilitate personal reflection and feedback. This feedback will form the basis of your Personal Development Plan, a bespoke action plan you will create to address your own specific development needs. Professional Development offers a range of workshops that, with support from your coach, will help you address the development needs identified in your Personal Development Plan. GLOBAL EXPERIENCE WEEK The Global Experience Week is an extraordinary opportunity for you to see business in action in an emerging market. Final project The Final Project is a valuable opportunity to put the theory you learn on the MBA into practice. This project will enable you to develop specialised expertise by working on a business problem either in a consulting capacity or by taking a more academic approach. The project can be sponsored by companies, so you may choose to do yours in conjunction with your own organisation. Alternatively, you can bid for a project sourced by the Business School, or find your own project, which provides a great opportunity to approach potential employers or organisations that are of particular interest to you. The Final Project consolidates your MBA experience and exposes you to career-enhancing opportunities. It will equip you with: Consulting and strategy experience An improved ability to apply the models, theories and frameworks learned throughout the programme to real-world business problems A deeper critical understanding of selected industries and markets Recent project clients include: Amnesty International BT EY Microsoft Research Development of technical expertise A better understanding of, and performance in, the process of research Improved career prospects and social capital ASDA Bupa Jaguar Land Rover Pfizer STUDENT CLUBS AND LEISURE The Imperial MBA enables you to form networks and friendships that will last a lifetime. The programme s social club regularly arranges events that families and partners are welcome to join, such as sporting occasions, social gatherings and trips. These, along with the annual MBA Ball, will add to your exciting and diverse MBA experience. You will have the opportunity to take part in one or more of the three hundred student clubs and sports across Imperial. You will also receive free membership of Ethos, our state-of-the-art sports centre, which is ideally located just across the road from the Business School. Through The Hub, our purpose-built virtual learning platform, you have convenient access to all programme materials and remain connected with your peers and tutors throughout the course. The Imperial MBA is entirely paperless, reflecting the way we work in today s globalised world. Receiving feedback from tutors and collaborating with classmates is simple with our interactive learning tools. In-class technology Your learning will take place in a technology-enhanced classroom that uses audience response systems and automated lecture capture, allowing you to access lecture recordings and review topics when it suits you. You will also use simulations and online tests to apply your learning in a structured environment. The Personal Leadership Journey will help you to identify your individual strengths and areas for development in terms of both your leadership skills and wider professional effectiveness. This in turn will enable you to produce a Personal Development Plan to meet your specific needs. Using this plan, you will engage in a range of professional development activities including workshops and practical exercises designed to help prepare you for the managerial and leadership challenges you ll face in your post MBA career. An integral part of the Executive MBA programme, with costs included in your tuition fees, the experience allows you to immerse yourself in the business environment of a specific country. This will take you on a journey of discovery to a country with a different and exciting business culture such as Argentina, Brazil or China.
