MINNEAPOLIS CHAPTER Chartered 1960 September 2015 Vol. 57, No. 8 Lisa Hamilton, Chapter President Carlson PRESIDENT S MESSAGE It has been a privilege to serve as chapter president this past year. A year of learning while leading. As I look at the past year and all that has transpired, I can say it has definitely been a trip down the rabbit-hole. By that I mean it was a year of embarking on new adventures and new routes just as Alice did in Lewis Carol's book, Alice in Wonderland. A year ago we approved a new budget that had us trying new things such as increases in monthly meeting fees and membership fees. Were the decisions wise? Maybe maybe not. What I can confirm is: We had excellent programs. We gained a new member firm/representative but lost some member firms/representatives. We tried new things some worked and some did not. What we did acquire during the year was knowledge and confirmation of things that should be changed as well as items that worked well and should be continued. This information was shared with the incoming president who worked with the budget committee to create a proposed budget for 2015-2016. A budget to help us retain and build chapter membership. The proposed budget will be shared and voted on at our September 16th Annual Meeting along with other chapter business. There will also be a time at the meeting to recognize and thank the outgoing board for their service as well as welcome the incoming board for 2015-2016. Your participation at this meeting is important and I hope to see you there. In closing, I'd like to thank each of you for working together this past year whether it was serving on a committee, participating at a philanthropy event or in chapter meetings. We made a difference and can continue to make a difference in the year ahead. I d like to leave you with two quotes that have reminded me about all that can be accomplished by working together. 2014-2015 Officers, Directors and Advisor President Lisa Hamilton Carlson Vice President/President- Elect/Philanthropy/PR Bev Kennedy Parliamentary Consulting Secretary Pro Tem Jen Baltrusch Cerner Corporation Treasurer Pam Steinkraus Graco Inc. All my best, Lisa Hamilton Chapter President, EWI of Minneapolis AUGUST 19 th CHAPTER EVENT RECAP Want to Find an Extra Hour In Your Day? By Jean Worrell, MDA Leadership Consulting According to Kathy Hanson, Principal of Backpocket Strategy, then you need to learn CHUNKING, or the means to break things down into smaller tasks and focus on only one thing for 45 minutes. Kathy says we as a society are used to doing three or four things at the same time, which means we aren t doing anything well at all. Our brains can only do one thing at a time really well. How to do this? Turn off all notifications on your phone and set a timer for 45 minutes. Ask yourself what s important to get done and then CHUNK Kathy Hanson out 45 to focus on one project. Take a short break (15 minutes), get up and move around, change your environment, etc. and then go on to another task for 45 minutes. You get the idea. Try setting limits on how often you check emails two or three times a day vs. reacting to emails all day long. If you CHUNK it, you ll both read messages more thoroughly and answer them more thoughtfully (perhaps reducing the number of emails you receive and send). One of her favorite quotes is from comedian, Jim Gaffigan: It s really hard to find the time to work out when you really don t want to. Kathy has created a tool called the Diary of Truth. You have to be honest with yourself about how you currently spend your time in order for it to be an effective tool. She says pick two random days that aren t typically the same and truthfully log what you do in 15 minute increments, putting them into Work, Home or Play columns. You also log unavoidable interrupters as well as avoidable interrupters throughout your day. Kathy says the Diary of Truth will give you aha moments as to how you spend your time, show you how often you are interrupted or distracted during the day, and allow you to change your behavior to work more effectively. CHUNK it. DIARY YOUR TIME. GAIN AN HOUR A DAY. 2 Page

MEMBER FIRM NEWS Graco Launches New Line for Oil and Gas Sector By Dee DePass, Star Tribune, August 11, 2015 9:33PM Determined to do more in the spheres of oil and gas, Graco Inc. has launched a new line of chemical injection pumps and flow control equipment that will keep pipelines and wells flowing in difficult conditions. In addition to pumps, the new product line includes high-tech controllers, durable seals and affordable remotemonitors that track fluid chemicals used to unclog wellheads and pipelines, the company said Tuesday. The new injection pumps, with names such as Wolverine and Python, were designed to be extremely rugged, last 25 times longer than existing products and to reduce emissions. Combined with its organically developed offerings such as the chemical injector suite of products, Graco now has a well-rounded product portfolio to serve the needs of oil and natural gas customers worldwide, said Chuck Rescorla, Graco vice president of corporate manufacturing and corporate development for the Minneapolis-based manufacturer. The new product launch is Graco s third big foray into the energy sector in a year. Last year, Graco bought Alco Valves Group and High Pressure Equipment Co. for nearly $180 million. In June, Graco introduced its own line of solar-powered injection equipment for drillers that sell for $1,000 to $6,000 each. Firm Anniversaries August: Xcel Energy Inc. (2003) September: Graco Inc.
