COLLECTION SERVICES STANDARD CURBSIDE RESIDENTIAL SERVICES : Standard service is one 64 gallon blue cart. Service is also available in 32 or 96 gallon carts. : Standard service is one 96 gallon green compost cart. Service is also available in 20, 32 or 64 gallon carts. LANDFILL LANDFILL: Standard service is one 32 gallon cart. If you need additional capacity, you may obtain a 64 or 96 gallon cart. The minimum service is a 20 gallon cart (mini-can). PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS PROGRAM Back/side yard service will be provided to customers with physical limitations at no additional charge. To request a physical limitations application, contact Customer Service. HOLIDAY SCHEDULE CHANGES Collection will not occur on New Year s Day (January 1), Thanksgiving (4th Thursday in November) or Christmas (December 25). During holiday weeks, if your regular collection day falls on or after one of these holidays, your collection will be moved to the next day. HOLIDAY TREE COLLECTION For the four weeks following Christmas day, holiday trees will be collected curbside. Trees must be undecorated, unflocked, cut to four-foot lengths with stands removed, and placed curbside next to your compost cart. SERVICE REQUESTS To report a missed pick-up, a broken/damaged cart, to request additional carts or for any other service-related inquiry, please contact Customer Service. CART SET-OUT Place carts curbside before 6 am on your collection day. Remove carts from the curb within 24 hours of collection service. We suggest storing carts in your back or side yard. Close all lids and please do not overfill containers. Place front of cart facing the street with a minimum of 2 feet between carts. CLEAN UP DAY REUSE FIRST! Residents are encouraged to donate all reusable items prior to scheduling their Annual Clean Up Day. Reusing is an essential component of zero waste, and it is one of the best ways to keep usable materials out of the landfill. Contact GreenWaste for resources on how to reuse a variety of household items. CLEAN UP DAY GUIDELINES Residents may schedule one on-call pick up per calendar year for the collection of up to four (4) bulky items and containerized recyclable materials, compostable materials and excess garbage. Materials will be collected only on a pre-scheduled basis on the same day as your regular collection. Bulky items in excess of four (4) will be collected at City-established rates. No single item can weigh more than 200 pounds. SCHEDULING YOUR CLEAN UP DAY Contact Customer Service at least one week in advance of your scheduled collection. Customer Service will ask about the type and size of materials that you will place out for collection. Hazardous waste and construction debris is not accepted through the program. DEBRIS BOXES GreenWaste of Palo Alto offers debris boxes in multiple sizes for construction and demolition materials (C&D), source separated materials, and garbage. Debris boxes can be ordered on an on-call basis or as a scheduled weekly service. Please contact Customer Service to schedule delivery of a debris box that will meet your needs for capacity, type of material and collection frequency. Please place all recyclable materials in your BLUE cart. Rinsing of recyclables is not required. Please consider reuse options before disposal. PLASTIC PAPER GLASS METAL E-WASTE EXTRA MATERIALS: All materials must be placed inside your BLUE cart for collection. Occasional (once or twice annually) extra recyclables can be placed curbside in a paper bag or cardboard box. Please increase service if you have regular extras materials. Please place all compostable materials in your GREEN cart. Consider home composting to conserve water and energy and reduce waste. FOOD SCRAPS FOOD SOILED PAPER ABLE PLASTIC YARD TRIMMINGS EXTRA MATERIALS: Up to three carts are available to residents at no charge; additional carts will be available for a fee. Occasional additional yard trimmings can be placed in compostable containers (e.g. paper bag) or 2 by 4 bundles next to your GREEN cart. LANDFILL LANDFILL Please place all garbage/landfill materials in your BLACK cart. Be sure you have recycled and composted everything you can before you landfill. ASEPTIC CONTAINERS SNACK PACKAGING EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE OTHER GARBAGE BE WASTE WISE!» Don t waste food. Make a smart grocery list and buy only as much food as you will eat.» Be mindful of packaging. Can the packaging be recycled? Is the packaging excessive?» Always seek reuse options. Make a craft out of boxes and newspapers or donate usable items.» Stock up on reusables. Water bottles, shopping bags, utensils and more!» Prevent litter. Close lids of collection carts and bag items that can fly away (such as small Styrofoam pieces). HHW (HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE) CURBSIDE COLLECTION MOTOR OIL & FILTERS Used motor oil must be in a clear one-gallon plastic container with a tight fitting screw-top lid. Used oil filters must be in a sealed clear tear-resistant bag. Place next to your recycle cart for collection. GreenWaste can provide containers/bags at no additional charge. HOUSEHOLD BATTERIES & CELL PHONES Household batteries (e.g., AA, AAA, D, nickel cadmium) and cell phones will be collected when put inside a sealed clear tear-resistant bag and placed on top of your recycle cart. GreenWaste can provide bags at no additional charge. IMPORTANT! Federal Law now requires the battery terminals be taped with non-conductive tape (electrical, duct, or masking tape) to prevent short-circuiting during transport. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE STATION Palo Alto residents may safely and conveniently dispose of their unwanted or unused toxic household items at the Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Station. HOURS Every Saturday 9am to 11am First Friday of each month 3pm to 5pm Holiday Closures: Please call or visit us online to check for holiday closures ADDRESS 2501 Embarcadero Way, Palo Alto, CA 94303 LIMITATIONS 15 gallons/125 pounds of HHW per visit Must be a Palo Alto Resident (driver s license or vehicle registration required) REUSE CABINETS Residents can pick up usable household products such as paints, cleaners and unused motor oil. These usable items were brought to the HHW Station for disposal by other residents and screened by the City before being placed in the cabinets for reuse. ACCEPTABLE ITEMS (complete list at www.cityofpaloalto.org/hazwaste) Asbestos (friable, wetted & double bagged, two (2) bag limit, 125 lbs. maximum) Cleaners Fluorescent light ballasts Gasoline Latex and oil based paints Medications (no controlled substances) Mercury wastes (e.g. thermometer, switch) Needles/syringes (in sealed/rigid container) Pesticides Propane tanks (BBQ and camp stove styles) Solvents PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS PROGRAM Residents with physical limitations can have their HHW picked up at their home for no additional charge.
