MAPPA 2 President s Corner As the MAPPA President, I would like to start out by thanking the 2010 conference host and planning committee at Western Illinois University and Augustana College for an outstanding event this past October. The annual conference was a fiscal and educational success. The conference revenues exceeded expenses by $59,000. The composition evaluation scores for 18 of the 20 speakers rated 97.5% of satisfied participants. We had a total of 341 registrants and 46 exhibiting business partners. We had 11 primary sponsorships and 9 golf sponsors. We had great time learning, sharing and making new networking opportunities. The MAPPA organization is a great group of dedicated individuals who are committed to the facilities management profession. We are 681 members strong located in 7 states and are comprised of individuals who focus on every aspect of higher education facilities management from plant operations to capital planning and design. I became involved in the MAPPA/APPA organization 5 years ago. At that time, I truly did not realize how much this organization had to offer. I am very honored to belong to this organization and believe that one of the greatest benefits of MAPPA is the networking opportunities that I have had. As my professional career changed during my 25 years at the University of Minnesota, I found that my MAPPA colleagues became my mentors. The folks that I met had a wealth of expertise and they openly and willingly supported me and challenged me. I have made many friends through my years with MAPPA and always look forward to interacting with my peers. I have truly learned more than I possibly could have on my own. At the 2010 annual conference, I introduced the MAPPA mentorship program or the M&M program for those of you who accepted the bag of M&M s. I am thrilled to say we have a handful of folks who have already stepped up and have become involved. If you have some interest, please read the details about the program in the newsletter or drop me a line. This is a new program and I need your help to make it successful. The program is aimed at creating a formal mentorship program that will enhance the future leaders in our organization and to give back to our organization for all the mentors that have helped us through the years. The learning in our profession never stops; we are always evolving and dealing with new opportunities and challenges. As leaders in our field, we need to invest in ourselves and partner together for mutual success. The MAPPA/ APPA organization offers many great training opportunities. These opportunities are offered throughout the year and at our upcoming regional conference. Please check out the APPA website at www.appa.org to learn more about: Supervisor Toolkit The nuts and bolts of Facilities Supervision Institute for Facilities Management Leadership Academy Educational Facilities Professional Certified Educational Facilities Professional If you are interested in any of these terrific programs, the MAPPA organization offers scholarship opportunities. Please check out the MAPPA website at www.m-appa.org or contact Chuck Scott, MAPPA Past President at cascott@ ilstu.edu The MAPPA website is currently in the process of being updated, so please check back regularly to hear about our great programs. On the website, you will be able to connect to the MAPPA lending library. The library offers a large selection of videos and other training materials that are available for your use. We are always interested to hear what you would like to see added to the library. On the website you will also find the scholarship application forms, the mentor and mentee application form, and our bylaws and administrative guidelines. If you are interested in connecting with the MAPPA/APPA members you can add your name to the listserv so you can ask questions or be involved in discussions. We have also entered the social network age and you can find us on Facebook. We will have all the upcoming conference pictures on Facebook so get connected now. As you can see, MAPPA is a conduit to transfer knowledge and wisdom. We continually look for ways to reach our members and business partners and would encourage each of you to reach out to the board of directors and let us know how we can improve our organization to benefit

MAPPA 3 you and our fellow members. We would also challenge you to become engaged in our organization by writing an article for our newsletter, submitting a paper to present at our upcoming conference, or by joining one of the volunteer committees to make our organization stronger. Before I close, please join me in congratulating the well deserved award winners from our region recognized at the 2011 APPA conference. Finally, I am asking those of you within the MAPPA region to provide me assistance this year by sharing your thoughts on what other things we should be focusing on. I invite you and your colleagues to join us at the upcoming 2011 MAPPA conference that will be co-hosted Cincinnati State and the University of Cincinnati. The host committee is hard at work to deliver you a great program. Please check out the 2011 annual conference web site at www.m-appa.org. We have a great program to offer and we are less than a month away so please sign up. We still have scholarships available if you would like to join us for the Supervisor Toolkit or the EFP (Educational Facilities Professional) prep course. It is time to invest in your self and become involved in our organization. If I can assist you with anything, please do not hesitated to contact me at manle001@umn.edu or 612-624-8226 I look forward to seeing all of you in Ohio Respectfully, Ruthann Manlet MAPPA 2011 President

MAPPA 4 MAPPA Mentorship Program My guess is that you have heard about the MAPPA Mentorship Program (M&M), but are not sure how to get involved. First, decide if you would rather be a mentor or mentee - both come with a one year commitment. From there you will get matched up with a person to start the program. Between eachother, set up a way to communicate and how often. A few great suggestions to get the communication started are: training and educational opportunities, sharing of resources and successes, and choosing a career path and advancement. For more information or an application, contact Ruthann Manlet @ manle001@ umn.edu Sign up and make a difference today! Big 10 & Friends Trainer s Conference While everyone had opening to think about, over 25 participants from 10 different locations joined together at Michigan State University for the Big 10 & Friends Trainer s Conference August 7-9, 2011. With a full schedule, not a minute was spared in educating the attendees at the newly renovated Brody Square. Programs included Taming the Email Beast with guest Randy Dean, Process Mapping, Generations, and Facilitation Skills to name a few. Tours were given of MSU s Neighborhood set up in Brody and Hubbard along with the MSU Recycling Center and Surplus Store. With great food from local restaurants, networking was a breeze and friendships were made. Cleotis Williams from the University of Arkansas, a first time participant emailed, I would like to thank you all from MAPPA Region for your hospitality and for hosting such a dynamic and inspiring training conference. There wasn t one particular educational session that didn t inspire me to greater lengths and depths, Stay tuned for next years conference!

MAPPA 5 Documenting our MAPPA Heritage By Becky Hines, MAPPA Historian Greetings to all of my MAPPA colleagues! I am so happy to have the opportunity to participate again in the organization that has been so important to me over the years! And I feel privileged to serve as the first MAPPA Historian charged with the task of documenting our wonderfully rich history. For those of you who don t know me, I retired four years ago from Ohio State where I worked for over 33 years. I have been a member of APPA/MAPPA since 1995, serving as MAPPA President in 2005. I need your help! While I m currently gathering information from a few different sources, I would appreciate it if you all would send me some of your memories from the past and present. I have newsletters going back several years, but in the pre-computer days records are not nearly as good. If you are still in contact with any of the elders of the organization who have retired, please contact them to share their memories. I d be glad to receive stories and information showing how things operated in the past within the organization such as old pictures (with names, if possible), old newsletters, etc. Reports/agendas/programs from annual meetings including types of presentations that were topical at the time would be very interesting. Please don t assume that I already have specific information I d rather receive duplicates than none at all. This history will be a fluid record on the MAPPA web page that changes as information is gathered and new entries are created. While I ll be the first to officially put them together, with your help, these archives will show our current and future members our organization s heritage for years to come. You can contact me by e-mail at beckeyeh@yahoo.com or fax at 614-263-4940. I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your help on this exciting project!
