I am writing this month s president s letter from Washington, DC after spending three days at the SHRM Volunteer Leaders Summit, where Chapter and State Council leaders gather each year to compare best practices, exchange ideas, and learn about the resources and tools SHRM provides to support local SHRM chapters and SHRM members. I will bring many ideas and resources from chapters across the country back to our own CISHRM Chapter and I m excited to share them! I also had the opportunity to become the first person in Iowa to obtain the new SHRM- SCP Certification by completing the SHRM Competency tutorial, which was a very positive and easy process. The tutorial will be available to all certified HR Professionals on January 5 th. Of course, the new SHRM Certification and the SHRM Competency Model received substantial attention throughout the course of the Conference and I found it very interesting and educational to hear from the SHRM President and CEO, the Board Chair, exam designers, and particularly fellow HR Professionals and Volunteer Leaders. Overwhelmingly, I heard from fellow HR Professionals that the tutorial and sample situational judgment questions (which will be included in the exam) are reflective of the actual competencies and behaviors we use to effectively practice Human Resources anywhere in the world and the real-life situations we encounter in our day-to-day work. If you haven t yet had the opportunity to learn about the competency model, please take the opportunity to take a close look and evaluate it for yourself. Many universities and Chief HR Officers at major corporations are adopting this model as a basis for HR education and professional development. Clearly, as a SHRM Chapter, CISHRM will be supporting the SHRM Certification and Competency model. However, we will continue to offer general and business credits through HRCI to ensure our PHR and SPHR certified members are well-supported and have ample opportunities to earn recertification credits. There are many ways employers can partner with their employees to help make the shift into retirement a pleasant and valuable experience. Our speakers will share statistics on how the ability to retire affects employees performance, healthcare costs and engagement. In addition, they will provide employers with tools and resources outside of the retirement plan to meet the needs of the workforce. Objectives Provide an understanding of retirement readiness and the impact for employers- financial, physical and mental. Discuss a combination of benefits and strategies that employers can use to guide and prepare employees- gradually transition with part-time schedules, increased flexibility, phased retirement, retiree benefits, education counseling. Explain the importance of preparing for Brian Drain - projecting openings and the experience and talent leaving the workforce. Also the preparation to hire, train and mentor at entry level. 5 Q Danielle Reeder Nominated by: Sara Deich (Past President) Danielle was awarded the Superior Service Award from CISHRM for her volunteer efforts in the third quarter of this year. We asked Danielle a few follow-up questions after she was presented with the award to learn more about her. What led you to volunteer with CISHRM? How long have you been volunteering? I've been volunteering with CISHRM since I joined the HR profession and CISHRM in I initially began volunteering by conducting mock interviews at Waukee High School; it was so fun to share some insight with the students involved. After my first volunteering experience, I looked for other ways to get involved and joined the Workforce Development Committee. I've loved getting involved in various other ways since then! What do you see as some of the benefits of volunteering with CISHRM? Volunteering with CISHRM gives you an opportunity not only to grow as an HR professional, but also to give back to the community. Volunteering also allows you to build connections with other HR professionals...plus it is so much fun! What is one piece of advice you would give somebody about thinking of volunteering with CISHRM? Don't be afraid to try new things! I have only had positive experiences volunteering with CISHRM and have learned something new through each experience that I've had. Start out with something that you find interesting...you never know where each opportunity will lead you! Are you interested in volunteering? 8 SHRM Certification - The New Credential for HR Professionals Effective January 1, 2015 SHRM will have new certification credentials of SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SPC). This new certification is the culmination of over three years of research, and based on the SHRM HR Competency Model, which was validated by more than 30,000 HR professionals around the world. These HR professionals identified the skills needed to grow and succeed in HR careers. Studies were conducted with five major corporations and five major research universities, including Walmart, Boeing, LWHRA SHRM Chapter, Michigan State University, Pennsylvania State University, Lusida University (Lisbon, Portugal), and University of North Carolina-Charlotte. The SHRM Certification preparation program will include: The new global Body of Competency and Knowledge (BoCK); A comprehensive exam; and Instructional materials and certification preparation tools Beginning January 1, 2015, HR professionals with existing HR certifications that are in good standing, will be eligible for the new SHRM Certification at no cost by completing the following by December 31, 2015: Document that your current certification is in good standing Sign the SHRM Code of Ethics Complete a brief online tutorial on HR competencies Professionals successfully completing the PHR or SPHR exam during the testing window of December 1, 2014 through January 31, 2015 are eligible for the new SHRM certification by completing the process outlined above. Central Iowa SHRM will continue to offer HRCI credit for chapter sponsored programs. Effective January 1, 2015, CISHRM will also offer credits that support the new SHRM certification for chapter sponsored programs. Central Iowa SHRM will offer a Study Group starting in January 2015 for individuals who wish to prepare to take the new certification exams.
