PROJECT- U What is Project-U? The courses offered at the Skills Centre are level 1 and form part of our Foundation Learning. These courses also offer personalised learning to include the main vocational aim, personal social development and functional skills. The courses run for 34 weeks in allowing you to achieve an award, certificate and then a diploma. How can I get to the centre? There is transport available. This will be discussed in further details with a member of staff. What will I do when I am at the Skills Centre? You will gain relevant and practical skills on your qualification as well as taking part in fun activities and educational trips. You will also start each day with a FREE breakfast. Teaching will be practical and hands-on with a chance to experience what working in the industry of your choice is really like. Links with employers provide live projects and you will get the chance to work on them once you have decided which course is right for you. What can I do after Project-U? On successful completion of your course there is the opportunity to enhance your skills by moving directly on to the level 2 programme which will run at the main Darlington College. www.darlington.ac.uk/project-u
Support The values within the Skills Centre are based on respect and all staff take personal responsibility for students in a caring and supportive way. There is a dedicated Project-U Co-ordinator who you will meet when you first apply for your programme that will be with you every step of the way whilst you are developing your skills. Within the Skills Centre there is additional learning support to help you with your work and give you any extra support you may need. If you are having problems at home, at college, or need someone to chat to about difficult times then our Learner Coach team can advise and help. Counselling We recognise that personal and private issues those you may find difficult to talk about can have a bearing on your time with us. As a result, the college s professional student counsellor service provides one-to-one confidential sessions to support you. Careers Guidance We have a team of Careers Guidance Advisers who make sure that you are on the right track from the word go. We will work with you on a one to one basis to help you make the right choice of programme and support you with next steps in to higher level learning or employment. Activities include: Next step programme choices CV workshops Interview techniques Employability workshops The college also works with external services such as the Connexions Service and IGEN to provide additional support where required. You will be introduced to skills and knowledge on business administration roles and you will also develop practical skills in preparation for work. What will I do on the course? You will attend class and practical sessions which will help with the production of personal information required for employment. Group work and independent study looking into vocational areas of interest and employment. Career planning Preparation for work Investigating a vocational area Personal development You will attend seminars, taught sessions as well as practical taster session in a vocational area. Introduction to Hair and Beauty Level 1 Diploma City & Guilds About the course This course is designed to build on your interests and passion for the Hair and Beauty industry, providing you with an ideal, practical induction to prepare you for further learning, training or employment in a junior role. What will I do on the course? This course enables you to develop necessary interpersonal skills as well as on-the-job skills. You will learn the importance of presenting a professional image throughout the course. Health and safety in the salon Shampooing and conditioning the hair Styling and temporary colouring the hair Plaiting and twisting hair Skin and hand care Basic make-up skills Nail art Throughout your studies you will collate a portfolio of work which will contain practical assessments, assignment work and other forms of knowledge evidence. What will I do on the course? You will learn to develop and practise basic hospitality skills required for employment and/or career opportunities and progression in the hospitality sector. You will work in the skill centre bistro area. Customer service Food and drink service Health and safety in the workplace Personal workplace skills Teamwork Communication skills You will be involved in a variety of practical workshops in a professional environment. Introduction to Health, Social Care and Children and Young People s Settings Level 1 Diploma CACHE About the course If you are considering a career working with vulnerable adults or working with children and young people then this qualification will give you an insight into your career choice. You will need to have a caring attitude and demonstrate that you have a willingness to learn, be reliable, honest and trustworthy. What will I do on the course? You will get the opportunity to research the different types of settings, the roles and responsibilities of care workers in different environments as well as offering you the knowledge and understanding of the main issues when working with adults and children and young people. Understand the range of services and rolls Principals and values Protection and safeguarding Working with others Health and safety Childrens development Physical and mental care You will learn through tutor led lectures, practical workshops, group work, tutorials and visits. You are expected to devote 6 hours per week in private study. What can I do after the course? Basic Construction Skills Painting and Decorating Level 1 Diploma C.Skills About the course This course will provide you with a good foundation in basic painting and decorating skills. This course is for beginners and will provide you with the underpinning skills and knowledge to progress through the levels of painting and decorating. What will I do on the course? This course covers the basic requirements of the trade that includes many techniques required. Prepare surfaces to receive final coverings Painting Wallpapering Application of paint systems and paper coverings Correct selection of tools and equipment Maintenance of the equipment Health and safety This is a practical based course where you will learn through underpinning theory sessions along with practical assignments which are carried out in the college site area. Public Services Level 1 Certificate Edexcel About the course This course is ideal if you want to work in a uniformed service, and will enhance your chance of selection to the uniformed services, but does not guarantee entry. What will I do on the course? You will study a range of fitness training for the Uniformed Services. You will also work as a team throughout the course. The course is structured to encourage the development of the skills required by the industry. What will I do on the course? You will be creative and develop ideas that can be effectively produced in various forms of media. Video production Audio production Photography Websites Animation Interactive media production You will learn how to effectively research, respond to a brief and understand the principles of communicating together with learning how to use media equipment such as scanners, cameras and media related software. IT Users Level 1 Diploma Edexcel About the course The course aims to develop the knowledge and understanding that are required within the IT industry and it will include a range of modules. What will I do on the course? You will be creative and develop ideas and designs used in IT, you will learn practical and problem solving skills. We have Open Events that take place throughout the year where you can visit the Skills Centre, meet staff and find out more about the range of programmes on offer. You can visit our website www.darlington.ac.uk for more information, dates of events and to fill in our online application form. Contact our dedicated Project-U Co-ordinator on 01325 503050 for an informal chat and more information. Once we have received your application form we will organise for you to have a one to one interview in the centre with the specialist tutor, and after this takes place we will confirm by telephone and letter that you have a place. Then you are on your way to a new start. All courses require a minimum number of students to be able to run. If you apply for a course and it is unable to be delivered you will be offered an alternative course in another vocational area or a place on the Employability and Personal Development course that will provide an alternative to your area of interest.
