We are the third largest urban nature preserve in the United States. Our Mission Our mission is to protect and manage Ruffner Mountain as a sanctuary for native species of plants and animals; and through our educational and passive recreational programs foster within the community an appreciation of the natural world. Our History Our history began in 1977 when a grassroots community movement came together to found a nonprofit organization to manage 25 acres of former limestone quarry and mine land. Over time that grew to the current 1,038 acres. Our Mines The land was mined for iron from the late 19th century newspaper reported that our mines produced over 200 tons of raw ore per day for processing at the nearby Sloss furnaces. www.ruffnermountain.org

Please help us preserve this history by leaving these relics just as you find them. Our Trails We maintain over 12 miles of trails spread throughout the mountain, that are open to the public for running, hiking, and the general enjoyment of nature. Our trails are also used for education purposes by student groups ranging from 1st grade through college. We encourage you to stay on the trails as there is unusual terrain and inherent danger at old mining sites. Please respect others bring any sort of wheeled vehicle on the mountain. We also ask that you respect our limited staff resources and leave our trails as clean as you found them, if not cleaner. Please flowers for others to enjoy. Admission Fees A suggested donation of $2 per person is greatly appreciated. As a 501 (c) (3) non profit organization, your donation is needed to support our operations, and is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. Program fees are reasonable and vary by program. Please visit our website for details.
