4 5 Company Reliable partner with many kinds of expertise We are a municipal services company whose sole shareholder is the City of Mainz, which is the center of our business activities and at the same time the starting point for our regional commitment. Our earning power allows us to contribute significantly and continuously to the municipal budget; for us alone, it is the basis for being able to prosper in the deregulated market, carry out projects of any size ourselves or with partners so we can maintain our growth policy. For our business partners, we are a guarantor for achieving their environmental objectives. Our core competencies are energy generation and water catchment as well as the operation of power, natural gas and water grids. Furthermore, we are active in the mobility (public transportation), infrastructure development, communication technology, technical building management and waste-toenergy sectors.
Objectives Committed to the sustainability principle It is our stated objective to fulfill the needs of the current generation without taking away the resources of future generations. Under the slogan Energy Turnaround for Mainz We are Strong!, we promote renewable energy expansion and energy efficiency optimization. In the energy generation sector, we focus on stronger use of combined heat and power generation that is particularly environmentally com- patible due to its high efficiency. For us, improving our customer proximity, effec- tiveness and competitiveness are our continuous tasks to assert ourselves in cutthroat competi- tion and expand our position as highly profit- able company to the advantage of our owners, employees, customers, business partners and region. Location Making a higher quality of life available In the pulsating scientific city of Mainz live, work, research and study approximately 200,000 people who enjoy the city s high common good standard and the attractive cityscape and we contribute significantly to both. Successful companies, famous institutes, important organizations and influential associations value Mainz as a corporate and industrial location. We continuously work towards raising this appreciation for Mainz and the region. Our path: Infrastructure projects characterized by sustainability and innovative character, as the following current examples show: > New residential area Gonsbachterrassen: A trail-blazing residential concept that caught all of Germany s attention. > Solar-City-Mainz: Measures for achieving an ambitious environmental objective of the City of Mainz. > Renovation of the customs port to a modern urban quarter: Unique combination of the living worlds of working, studying and leisure.

Energy High energy efficiency characterizes us In the energy sector, we are active in the value creation steps of generation, transportation and distribution. Our own power stations, such as our customers decentralized plants, are characterized by high energy efficiency often thanks to the intelligent use of combined heat and power generation. This also applies to our power, gas and heat grids, where the use of state-of-the-art technology and new materials ensure low transportation losses. For the Stadtwerke Mainz corporate group, the efficient and environmentally compatible generation of power and heat are very important. For this reason, it has centered its efforts for many years in the renewable energy sector, both by supporting customer projects and by building and operating its own plants. Darmstadt

Energy Renewable energies are our future We promote renewable energy expansion in all fields: > Sun > Wind > Biomass > Water > Geothermal energy Alone or with partners, we take advantage of every financial opportunity to erect new plants or those offered for sale. Thus, we have purchased a river power plant in the Sauerland region and participated on the erection of the over 30 megawatt solar park in Tutow, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Our subsidiary»überlandwerk Groß-Gerau GmbH«is currently investing about 35 million euros in the construction of a plant for making electricity out of geothermal energy that should become operational in 2012. We strive to become regional leaders in this still novel field for Germany.

Drinking water A vital nutrient There is no scarcity of drinking water in Germany, but its quality varies a lot. As more than 2,000 routine and special tests have proved year after year, the quality of our drinking water is excellent naturally, these tests are carried out with the most advanced techniques and using the latest technology. Mainz drinking water is a vital nutrient whose standards are well below the guideline limits of the current Drinking Water Ordinance and in other relevant sectors those of the World Health Organization (WHO) for baby food. Our water grid supplies water directly to about 250,000 people, but the delivery capacity of our three large waterworks is nonetheless not exhausted so that we can also support neighboring supply companies in the supply of their customers.
12 13 Mobility More mobility with less environmental pollution We make sure that Mainz residents are mobile. The routes of the»mainzer Verkehrsgesellschaft mbh«(mvg, Mainz Traffic Co.), our public transportation subsidiary, impress owing to their extension, good connections, short intervals and last but not least equitable fares. In 2009, 47.3 million passengers rode our environmentally-friendly buses and streetcars. The optimization of the mobility service with the simultaneous minimization of pollution caused by individual traffic is our guiding concept in expanding the public transportation system. Two current projects show how it is implemented: > Expansion of the streetcar routes: A 10-kilometer track to expand the»mainzelbahn«will cost about 70 million euros, and the new environmentally-friendly low-floor vehicles will run with renewable energies. About an additional 1.1 million passengers are expected, and this will mean the elimination of pollution and noise of about 2.3 million car-kilometers. > MVG-MeinRad (MVG MyBike): Our subsidiary MVG and the City of Mainz won the nationwide competition Innovative Public Bicycle Lending Systems New Mobility in Cities in 2009. Until 2012, about 3.8 million euros (including grants) will be invested for linking up the environmentally-friendly means of transportation (bicycle, bus and streetcar) that makes ecological and financial sense.
Services Consulting, support and contracting Energy consulting and support from the same source. Following this trend, we founded the»mainz Foundation for Climate Protection and Energy Efficiency«. In Mainz, Rhine-Hessen and the Groß-Gerau District, it supports innovative projects in both sectors that are based on the sustainability principle and contribute to the energy turnover. In the renewable energy sector, the developmental trend is the building of decentralized plants. Our modular developed system»swm-contracting«offers solutions for this sector that go significantly beyond the construction and operation of power plants and also encompasses planning, financing, maintenance and commissioning services. Among other things, we offer our customers contracting solutions in three communication technology areas: telecommunications, security technology and radio technology. Banks, department stores, jewelers, retirement homes, physicians, lawyers and private residences have hired us to look after their communication technology. We operate plants for the City of Mainz and are licensees for switching on the installations to the police and fire department control centers.
14 15 Certifications Awards thanks to outstanding employees We are one of the largest employers and training center in Mainz and the surrounding region. Our employees are the energy sources from which motivation, expertise and professionalism originate the three pillars of our success. Two current awards we received in 2010 document exemplarily how outstanding our workforce is: > The European Center of Employers and Enterprises Providing Public Services (CEEP) gave us, as only one of three German companies, the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) label 16 companies out of 250 obtained a prize. With this, the jury honored our strategy of making energy, mobility and other services available to the region in a sustainable way as our contribution to ensure and expand the quality of life. Our dedicated efforts in the Rhineland-Palatinate partner country of Rwanda and other African countries where we successfully execute energy projects according to the slogan Help for Self-Help with our»energy for Africa Foundation«received special mention.
