Tuesday, September 16th, 2014 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia! Design strategies for the Hot & Humid Lecture Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants) IEN Consultants Gregers Reimann, CEO of IEN - the expert green building consultants for Malaysia, presents the green building trends for South east Asia and the key strategies for improving the performance of buildings in the tropics. Introduction to design and optimization strategies for building for hot and humid climates. Diamond Building Tour by Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants) Excursion The Diamond Building, which consumes only 1/3 of the energy consumption of ordinary office buildings in Malaysia, is the most celebrated green building in Malaysia (winner of the prestigious Asean Energy Awards, second prize at the ASHRAE Technology Awards 2013). Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants), who was the green consultant for this project, will give the tour of the building. GEO Building Tour by Dr. Wolfgang Kessling (Transsolar) & Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants) Excursion The GEO building, a zero energy building. is the most energy efficient office building in South-East Asia at the moment. The building pioneers new solutions for office building in the tropics including TABS (thermally activated building systems), extensive daylighting, river roof (as alternative to cooling tower), phase change material for thermal storage and building integrated PV. Not everything went according to the plan and some important lessons were learned. The tour will be given by Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants) and Wolfgang Kessling (Transsolar), who were both consultants for the project. Three hour drive by bus to Melaka and check into hotel 2
Wednesday, September 17th, 2014 - Melaka, Malaysia! Mini Malaysia! Tour by Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants) Excursion Mini Malaysia, a collection of full-scale vernacular architectural buildings with UNESCO heritage status, is where we get to experience the original architectural principles before the arrival of air-conditioning and cement/bricks/steel. Tour conducted by Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants), who will bring along temperature measuring equipment to evaluate the effectiveness of natural energies and passive techniques. CoolTek House! Tour by Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants) & Stephanie Bacon Excursion The CoolTek House, an energy efficient house built for 24-hour air-conditioning and the first house in the tropics to comply with the Passive House Standard for tropical climates. With the later addition of a 4.8 kw solar PV installation, the house is zero energy. Tour conducted by Stephanie Bacon (owner) and Gregers Reimann (IEN Consultants). Four hour drive by bus to Singapore and check into hotel" Thursday, September 18th, 2014 - Singapore! Sustainable Design Joint Session! Lecture Dr Nirmal Kishnani (NUS) National University of Singapore Lecture, discussion and dinner with Dr Nirmal KISHNANI (NUS), Program Director of Integrated Sustainable Design MSc of the National University of Singapore, and students. www.sde.nus.edu.sg/mscisd/ 3
Friday, September 19th, 2014 - Singapore! Bishan Park! Tour by Tobias Baur (Atelier Dreiseitl) Bishan Park Ecologically-designed park that is an innovative merger of public amenity and water infrastructure. Intense storms are able to be absorbed through a series of massive canal/bioswales that change the interactive dynamic of the park. Applies a water-sensitive urban design approach (ABC Waters design) to managing rainwater sustainably. http://www.dreiseitl.com WOHA Architects Werkschau with Arch. Richard Hassell (CEO WOHA) WOHA Architects Singapore-based WOHA Architects www.woha.net propose a new model for tropical architecture and a passive, structural solution to the problems of sustainability. Their projects show that an alternative strategy to the sleek air-conditioned box can work in the tropics and has implications everywhere. Parkroyal, WOHA! Tour by Bernard Lee (WOHA) Parkroyal on Pickering An explosively landscaped hotel, WOHA Architects have long been advocates of the ultimate green city one that would be comprised of more vegetation than if it were left as wilderness and the PARKROYAL on Pickering was designed as a hotel-as-garden that actually doubled the green-growing potential of its site. School of Arts, WOHA! Tour by Bernard Lee (WOHA) School of Arts A specialist high school for the visual and performing arts. The design is a new paradigm, a large, dense, perforated urban object that achieves natural light and ventilation to all areas, despite its deep dimensions. Designed for energy efficient hybrid cooling of higher temperature and humidity levels in combination with ceiling fans. 4
Saturday, September 20th, 2014 - Singapore! Gardens by the Bay Conservatories! Tour by Dr. Wolfgang Kessling (Transsolar) Gardens by the Bay Spectacular and energy efficient greenhouses for cool climate plants deploying cutting edge engineering and closed loop systems for temperate climate plants. Tour by Wolfgang Kessling (Transsolar), who designed and implemented the climate engineering concept for this project. Departure from Singapore" Last minute modifications due to lecturer availability and participant needs are possible 5
