LASHING BLOCKS Original simple, reliable, efficient, Karver KB block is outstanding for numerous applications. Released 6 years ago, Karver s KB has won many awards, including the famous Freeman K. Pittman Award 2006, for innovation and design. Attached with a basic lashing, KB is unequalled in weight (vey light) to working load (very high) ratios. Assembled with ball or roller bearings, KB guarantees exceedingly low friction. Assembled with plain bearings, KB-C guarantees very high working load compared to its size. SHIFT POSSIBILITIES lashing link offers unlimited applications and lots of different ways to attach the block (see examples next page) SAFETY lashing through the block s center significantly increases safety, because even if the block breaks, the running rope is still held by the lashing one. Karver furling-lock (patented) SAFETY once the KFH is locked, the halyard is not structural anymore. Luff is stiffer, no more tension loss due to halyard stretch, less compression in mast and maximum safety WEIGHT SAVING no more 2:1 halyard block is needed. As the luff tension purchase is on deck, the gravity center is significantly lowered. One halyard of minimum is needed PERFORMANCE when used, the KFH minimises the loss of luff due to its compact design. When unused, there is a minimum weight left on the mast, due to the swivel coming down with the sail, which makes servicing easy ERGONOMICS the KFH is the only system on the market combining a lock and a swivel on the same unit Four years after its release, the Karver furling-lock KFH (patented) is still unmatched and unique. It is the only system combining the furling swivel and the locking mechanism in the same unit. The lock mechanism allows you to lock the swivel, the halyard and the sail directly onto the mast. The lock is automatic, locking and unlocking is done by tensioning the control halyard. Used for flying sails (such as gennaker, staysail, stormsail) the KFH replaces the usual block system with which the luff tension comes from the very long 2:1 or 3:1 halyard purchase. It also greatly reduces the compression in the mast. With the KFH system, luff is tensioned from the bottom via a purchase situated under the lower part of the furler. Non-racing application examples: - Gennaker/light genoa: most production sailing yachts do not include a mast equipped with 2:1 halyard purchase for foresail, using KFH it becomes easy to have a powerful sail thanks to an accurate setting. - Stormsail: while calm weather, the sail is safely inside the sail compartment, the only part remaining on deck is a padeye and the lower part of the KFH on the mast base. When the wind is blowing up, the operation consists in fixing the drum to the padeye, the sail to the KFH lower part and hoisting till locked. - Downwind staysail: same operating way. Our R&D team works closely with our manufacturing team and procurement office, to control all projects, from idea to final product going through prototype production, bench testing, on situation testing and product validation. Quality is therefore checked all over the full production line. systems 14 15 Smart furler The KBTi Smart Block s rapid success has convinced Karver to release a Smart Furler. It offers the same technical characteristics as KBTi SB. Its main objective is to measure the load applied to the mast swivel: the only way to obtain the rig load and the sail load in the same calculation. Custom applications Experienced in deck gear integrated load calculation, Karver is able to provide the wireless Smart System in any part of the boat: padeye, forestay, backstay, etc. Technical Evolution! The Karver KBTi Smart Block offers all of the standard KBTi s advantages with the addition of an integrated load sensor. The block wirelessly transmits the load applied to the rope running through the sheave in real time. The information can be read on the boat s computer and/or displays. The specially developed software makes it possible to recall the history of the loads on the blocks, and to set sleep mode/recording mode regarding a relevant load threshold. Used since June 2008, the lithium-ion battery KBTi Smart Block has been requested by extreme performance boats such as Open 60 (VM Matériaux, Brit Air), Volvo 70 (Green Dragon Team) and Maxi Trimarans (Banque Populaire V and Sodeb O). The KBTi Smart Block range starts from 8T working load to 13T in its standard version, and can be manufactured for higher working loads upon request. A new energy source using solar panels is currently being tested. In addition to improving self sufficiency, this smaller device will allow Karver to include Smart Systems in the KBO range from the KBO20 size. w Latest development The Ratchet Block by Karver Latest development The Cam Cleat by Karver J lashing RATCHET BLOCKS Lashed through its center, KARVER KBOw is the first ratchet block to allow activation in both directions. Unlike existing cam cleats which function with two rotating jaws, the new Karver K-Jammer uses two parallel jaws. The jaws area in contact with the rope is wider, and always the same. The rope is held better and wear is reduced. CAM CLEAT S. Gaspari 16 WEIGHT REDUCTION the use of composite fibres and the lashing through the center greatly improve the weight to strength ratio MAXIMUM SAFETY as with all other Karver blocks, if the KBOw fails, the rope remains held by the lashing. The ability to activate the ratchet function in both directions prevents unpleasant surprises due to oversights during boat preparation or mistakes during high speed maneuvers PERFORMANCE the ratchet mechanism of the sheave is simpler and more reliable than standard ratchet blocks (using only 2 parts). A cheek-integrated guide, combined with a rope shackle, makes the KBOw quick and easy to install SAFETY the jaws system is patented. This system features two main advantages: unlike V-shape cam cleats, the tightening is uniform for any rope from 4 to 10 mm. The KJ working load is the same for any and any rope type: no need to have two cam cleats on the same line anymore! DESIGN aluminum jaws are chafe resistant. The design and shape of the entry allow lines to be released and engaged easily. The system is smaller than other cam cleats, the jaws are protected, and are shock proof S S PERFORMANCE thanks to its structural base made of aluminum and its innovative cleat system, the KJ is simple, light and strong. The KJ has been designed for the new generation of high modulus rope, therefore working perfectly with Dyneema, Kevlar and other slipping ropes CUSTOM A wide range of options for KJ is available to adapt it to many applications: - Stainless steel guide - Wedge kits and risers to adapt the cam angle - Range of colored rings for coding of cams KJ vs. V-shape cam cleat LATEST DEVELOPMENTS 17
"Optimist" Karver on board: KB V. Rustuel - Angels Sea Studio We are aware that the chase for performance brings us to use high-tech materials such as titanium, carbon fibres, ceramics, etc. which demand a lot of energy to produce. We believe things will change. Since 2008, we have been working with "eco" or "ecosourced" materials. Our first tests have been successful on KB and KBO ranges on which regular composite polyamid/glass fibres cheeks have been replaced by PLA* composite strengthened with flax fibres LINTEX. The end material is fully manufactured from non-feeding oriented renewable resources. It is compostable and ensures a reduced impact upon the environment. After additional tests on our blocks, the material is due to be used on all Karver ranges: KB, KBO, KJ and KF. *PLA: Poly-Lactic Acid resulting from corn stem eco In 2010, Karver has decided to calculate its Carbon Footprint. Our main objectives are a reduction in our carbon emissions, a modification of our work practices, and a rational policy of future structural investments in order to be as respectful of the environment as possible. Flax fibres Details of other eco block parts: Thermoplastic balls (recycling) Aluminum sheave (recycling) Industrial flax source: Normandy, world s first producer (qualitative) By September 2010, Karver will move to a new building. We decided to invest in a HQE project (High Environmental Quality). Wood will be used, as well as energy saving solutions.
