Interface between Eircom Network and Additional Telephone Equipment External Terminating Unit The ETU (small cabinet, 230mm x 150mm x 150mm) is fitted by the customer on an exterior wall, at a point approx 600mm above the damp proof course, at a location that will facilitate the Eircom cable entering an accessible area of the house, ideally a hallway. The Eircom Cable must not be broken at this A 37 mm thick walled polyethylene or 50mm PVC duct supplied by the customer, is laid at a minimum depth of 450 mm from the External Terminating Unit (ETU) at house to link into the nearest underground Eircom box or Eircom pole on the roadway. The duct to enter the ETU for a distance of 25mm. Under no circumstances should any other services enter the ETU. Where the length of the pipe is greater than 30m or if the pipe cannot be laid in a continuous run, then a suitable inspection box must be built. In the first instance in the path at the house, in the second instance at the point where lengths of pipe meet. Network Terminating Unit The NTU 2001 is the termination point of the eircom network. Faults in the network are eircom s responsibility while faults in the internal wiring are the responsibility of the customer. The NTU 2001 allows eircom staff and the customer, to determine whether it is in the internal wiring or in eircom network. The NTU should always be located in an accessible position. Eircom would recommend the hallway as the NTU can be used as the first socket. It must be directly behind the ETU. 1

NTU Terminations The NTU 2001 is divided in two parts, the eircom connecting unit (ecu) and the Customer Connection Unit (CCU). eircom connecting unit Customer Connection Unit (CCU). Telephone can be plugged in to this point to check for dial tone Customer Connection Unit(CCU). IN IN Out Out IN Alarm IN Out ISDN Out Second Line S1 R S2 Extension Wiring L1 R L2 ISDN Alarm 2

CCU WIRING If auxiliary wiring is in place for ISDN, Alarm, Extensions or an additional PSTN line these should be fed through the aperture in the ecu for termination on the CCU. The extension wiring can be connected to the terminals L1 and L2 on the CCU. If a second line is connected, this should be connected to S1 and S2 also on the CCU. Secure the cables to the posts with the cable ties provided as shown in Figure 2. Cut off the excess cable tie and ensure that the buckle is on top. Alarm Termination Wiring to Alarm systems and ISDN lines are terminated on IDC blocks using the normal IDC terminating tool. A number of zero ohm resistor straps shall be removed as required. The wiring to the alarm control panel must be connected to the red IDC block. This is marked 'in' and 'out'. The wiring to the alarm unit is terminated on the connection points marked 'in' and the wiring from the alarm unit is terminated on the connections marked 'out'. The two resistor straps marked AL must be disconnected to complete the circuit. The alarm unit is now connected and it will over ride the use of the PSTN socket in the event of alarm activation. Please note that a faulty alarm unit may cause PSTN service to fail on the front socket outlet. ISDN Connection The wiring to the ISDN 'NT1+' can be connected to the white IDC block with the normal IDC terminating tool. This is marked 'in' and 'out'. The wiring to the 'NT1+' is terminated on the connection points marked 'in' and the wiring from the 'NT1+' is terminated on the connections marked 'out'. The three resistor straps marked ISDN must be disconnected to complete the circuit. Any slack wiring should be fed into the back of the flushbox. When the NTU 2001 is flush mounted the aperture in the centre of the lower edge of the CCU is used to accommodate the extension, ISDN and Alarm cables when the cover is replaced. The screws are then tightened taking care that none of the auxiliary wiring is caught. Preferred Wiring Lay out for Additional Sockets Bathroom Bedroom 1 Bedroom 2 Kitchen Secondary Sockets Dining Room Sitting Room Bedroom 3 All internal telephone cables should be 3 Twisted Pair (six wire solid conductor) NTU 3
