Note that the screen may also be oriented using the Floating Tools which are probably at the left-hand-side of the monitor because, when installing the software, the Floating Tools bar is placed in the Startup folder. If it is not at the left, it can be found by right-clicking on the SMART Board icon and choosing the <Show Floating Tools> or accessed through the start menu. The following elements are part of the <Floating Tools> at the right: Select tool pointer Pen (slides out to choose the color) Highlighter (slides out to choose the color) Eraser (slides out to choose the width) Straight Line (slides out to choose the type of line) Shapes (slides out to choose the type of shape) Right-click Keyboard computer keyboard available on the white board (Also available by pressing the keyboard button on the SMART Board) Notebook prepare slides, work interactively, and save Screen Shade Spotlight Undo Customize Floating Tools to change the above settings Page 2 of 5

Use as a Mouse (Beginner's Starting Point) 1. Set up the SMART Board system connecting all the cables and orienting the screen. 2. At the computer, start the software. 3. Conduct the lesson at the SMART Board by touching the screen to make things happen. Your finger acts as the mouse when touching the SMART Board. On the SMART Board front panel (lower right hand side or center of tray) there are two small buttons. One operates the keyboard to type information into the program (note that it is much easier to use the laptop's keyboard) One allows right-clicking of the mouse Holding down both buttons is a shortcut to the orienting screen It is recommended to practice before presenting the lesson! 4. Use the colored pens to write notes / comments on the screen. Note that the tray color denotes the color that will display on the screen, not necessarily the pen color. Your fingertip or the pen may be used to write on the screen using the color of the empty tray. The eraser may be used to remove markings. Note that when the SMART Board software is installed, the SMART Tools will be available in any software package. <Magnifier> makes a part of the screen larger so that students can read the small print. <Screen Shade> can hide part of the screen in Internet Explorer or any software program. <Spotlight> allows the pointing out of a particular part of the screen. Note that by clicking the Aware toolbar in the application (other than Notebook) it allows the program to save any markings made or turn the markings into text. Aware Tools only pops up in the program when the pen is picked up Aware Tools does not pop up in OpenOffice Writer (but it does in the other elements of OpenOffice and all Microsoft programs) All markings will be lost when scrolling or saving if the Aware toolbar is not used <Insert as Image> will insert what you have drawn on the screen into the file <Insert as Text> will change your handwriting into typed text <Saving Ink Notes> is a screen capture that take your work to Notebook Page 3 of 5

Using the Notebook Software The Notebook software comes with the SMART Board software download and is used to create interactive presentations. Wonderful lessons and more have already been created within the software and are ready for downloading from the Smarttech site. Please note that Notebook presentations may be downloaded or created in advance without being connected to a SMART Board. Download the free SMART Board software on any computer as explained on page 1. The Notebook toolbar contains common word processing functions and also has some new buttons: Full Screen Previous, Next, or New Page Show / Hide Screen Shade Pen Colors / Highlighter, Creative Pen (special effects), Eraser Shape Recognition Pen to make perfect shapes, Magic Pen whose ink disappears with time Page Sorter / Gallery / Attachments / Properites These may be accessed at the side of the screen or by clicking <View> on the Notebook toolbar. They may be changed from one side of the screen to the other by clicking the double arrow in the middle. The Page Sorter view allows thumbnail viewing of all pages listed down the side of the screen. The selected page will be enlarged on the screen for editing purposes. Note that dragging a page up/down in the Page Sorter will change the order of the pages. Note that checking the Auto-Hide box at the bottom of this section, makes that section disappear when the enlarged editing page in the center is clicked. Click on the Page Sorter tab to get the Page Sorter back. The Gallery can be selected to get pre-made pages and graphics. <Essential for Educators> will show individual pages / graphics organized by content area if the section is expanded by clicking on the '+' sign. <Gallery Sampler> will have pictures / backgrounds / interactive media / lessons for <Education> and <Professional>. <Lesson Activity Toolkit> has many built-in features to easily create special effects. Note that more lessons are located online and may be accessed by clicking <Online Essential for Educators>. Right now this link is under construction, but you still may access it directly at Smarttech.com. Click <Education> and then <All Lesson Activities>. Mostly, we recommend the SMART-Created lessons. The Fill Effects controls the background. The Attachments is used for quick access to files needed during a presentation. Page 4 of 5

Using the Notebook toolbar at the top of the screen and the <Gallery> at the sides for graphics, create the page. 2. To insert text, click on the <Text> button and then click anywhere on the page to begin typing. The font may be changed while typing. The green circle allows rotation of the text. The open circle allows resizing of the font. The down arrow allows for other available options. Clicking on the text allows one to move / drag the text box. 3. To insert graphics use the <Gallery> for pictures created by SMART Board or click <Insert> from the menu bar to insert your saved graphics. Double-click or drag a <Gallery> graphic to the page. Graphics may be resized and dragged to the desired location using the same tools as the text tools above. 4. A new page will appear in the <Page Sorter> on the side of the screen. Remember that the order of the pages may be changed by dragging the pages up or down.
