DECS SERVICES DECS is the technology resource and IT support unit for the College of Engineering. All engineering faculty, staff and students are provided an engineering account that includes: engineering e mail (separate from mail.msu.edu) network file storage and backups access to engineering site licensed software and resources Forward mail.msu.edu to egr.msu.edu No quota is imposed on egr.msu.edu e mail accounts and spam filtering is utilized. 3 http://www.egr.msu.edu/decs/ WEB SERVICES 4 2

BACKUPS & STORAGE DECS provides high speed, scalable and reliable network storage. Provides file snapshots as far back as three weeks for home and research providing immediate retrieval of deleted data. Tape back ups are performed daily. 7 ENGINEERING & ERC NETWORKS A Web based registration system is used to provide quick and automatic access to the wireless network. tiny.egr.msu.edu or dhcp.egr.msu.edu 8 4
Remote Access Engineering has a Juniper VPN available. Visit: https://vpn.egr.msu.edu for offsite use of site licensed software and access to mapped drives. Remote Desktop Services access the DECS Public Computer Lab Windows environment. SSH and SFTP access is available via scully.egr.msu.edu Linux compute servers longer compute jobs requiring more resources/run time. Remote Desktop Gateway 9 MAIL SERVICES Mail aliases for groups, as well as mailing lists for monitoring e mail to groups are available. There are no quotas on mail boxes. If you receive an e mail requesting you provide your password, this is a phishing attempt. Do NOT respond! DECS and MSU will never ask for your password. 10 5
ALWAYS UPGRADING Each year, new computers are purchased and installed in the engineering labs. The seats being replaced are then recycled into offices and research labs for faculty, staff and students. Requests are made through department chairs. SOFTWARE DECS will install and manage any software application that is needed for research and/or instruction whether it be on the UNIX compute cluster and/or PC labs. Allow four weeks for installation and testing before production. Through Microsoft's Developers Network Academic Alliance (MSDNAA) a lot of Microsoft's software is available to all faculty and students. Install and run anti virus (DECS can provide) Follow guidelines to secure the systems on the network. When a system is infected and poses a risk to other systems on the network, it will be blocked from the network. 14 7
