Inform CBE/SAIT Dual Credit: Pharmacy Assistant Certificate Program What is the credential? Pharmacy Assistant Certificate (SAIT) This is a dual credit opportunity. High schools students will achieve credits towards their high school diploma using the CTS, 4 Pharmacy Assistant LDC courses and Work Experience (25 high school credits). Students can achieve 22.5 SAIT credits towards the completion Pharmacy Assistant Certificate. This program will fulfill requirements of both Alberta Education and the SAIT Pharmacy Assistant Program. This program is a two year commitment on the part of the student and includes a summer Work Experience component in a pharmacy setting during the summer following their Grade 12 year. Industry Connection/Opportunities: What are the benefits for students in industry as a result of achieving this credential? Students complete a practicum in an industry setting. Graduates may work in hospitals and community-based retail pharmacies in drug stores, supermarkets and department stores. Pathway - Course Requirements: How could this pathway be mapped out? Students would begin this program in their second year of high school. Students must be 18 years of age to participate in the final practicum. Prerequisites: To begin the program: Students must have completed grade 10 to enroll in the program. There is a strong math component in the Pharmacy Assistant Program Students should have at least 60% in Math 10C To complete the program, students require: Complete English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2 Math 20-1/Math 20-2 completed in their grade 11 year. Revenue Stream for Pharmacy Assistant Program Staffing Requirements Teacher Qualifications/Instructor Qualifications: What are the teacher qualifications/certifications required to offer this credential? All courses CTS, LDC and Work Experience would require a certificated teacher for curriculum support and supervision. Would an external instructor/expert be required to support delivery of this credential? The pharmacy courses housed in the LDCs must be delivered by an Instructor who is credentialed and experienced in the pharmaceutical industry. Facility Requirements: What does the school need to do to offer this credential opportunity to students? CLASSROOM REQUIREMENTS: Computers for online course delivery Regular classroom space for tutorials and support LAB REQUIRMENTS: Opportunities for Two Different Lab Scenarios: 1. SAIT hosts Lab: This would occur in existing SAIT labs. No lab purchases would be required by CBE. Student Requirements: Students/parents will be required to cover the transportation costs to and from SAIT campus or CBE host school, text resources, scrubs and SAIT parking costs (if required). Possible Delivery Model: SAIT/CBE High School Collaboration Off-Campus (SAIT): Theory and Laboratory: At least 3 days with 3 hour lab and theory day a week would be required. This theory and lab work could be done on the SAIT campus in a simulated retail pharmacy environment. All lab equipment, required software and drugs (fake and expired) and prescription processing equipment would be available. Students could travel to SAIT for predetermined days in which the lab work components of the course would be completed. Students would have access to all equipment required for lab work: simulated pharmacy environment, specialized lab equipment, drugs for prescription filling KROLL computer software Home High School (CBE): On the days that the students are not at SAIT, students study at their home school to master the learning outcomes and complete CTS course required. Instructor Requirements: SAIT Instructor and SAIT lab technician to instruct students in lab A certified CBE teacher (Science background): o support students with their CTS courses and online LDC learning 2 days a week. o Tutorial/role play lessons could be conducted by the CBE teacher who is working collaboratively with the SAIT instructor o Support assessment of learning outcomes for this program Practicum semester: Four week practicum - unpaid work - in a pharmacy.
