All hospitals, some clinics, retail pharmacies such as Fred Meyer, Hi-School Pharmacy, Safeway, and most other small pharmacies employ Pharmacy Technicians. Pharmacy Technicians dispense medications, count pills, take inventory, stock supplies, type prescription labels and perform other assignments as allowed by law. Wages may vary depending on benefits being offered. As of January 2011, the median hourly wage for Pharmacy Technicians in Washington State is currently $17.20 an hour. ABOUT THE PROGRAM The program utilizes mock pharmacy software in a simulated pharmacy setting in the classroom and lab to prepare students for a practicum instruction. The practicum includes 240 contact hours in a variety of pharmacy settings: acute hospital, home infusion, community clinic pharmacy, chain pharmacy, long-term care pharmacy, and including compounding pharmacies. The student is required to complete two different externships during the course of the program. Placement in externships will be in both Oregon and Washington for all students, so reliable transportation is required. Applicants must be detail oriented, enjoy multi-tasking activities, record keeping using computer based programs, and providing customer service in an efficient and confidential manner. Clark College offers multiple program options for Pharmacy Technician. Beyond the Certificate of Proficiency (CP), students now have the option of completing an Associate of Applied Technology (AAT) degree in Pharmacy Technician Leadership. This new degree program is intended for those students who would like to focus on developing skill sets in leadership, business relations and professional development. Acquiring these additional skills provide aspiring pharmacy technician students with a significant advantage in securing entry level positions, as well as opportunities to progress within their career field. Students also have an opportunity to transfer credits into a Bachelor of Applied Science in Information Technology and Administrative Management (BAS-ITAM) program offered online through Central Washington University. See a Health Occupations Advisor for more information. Page 1

3 PHARMACY TECHNICIAN CAREER DEMANDS As you consider applying to the Clark College Pharmacy Technician program, it is important that you understand the requirements of the program and the profession. Students in the Pharmacy Technician program, as well as Pharmacy Technicians working in the field, experience physical demands such as standing for long periods of time and lifting boxes of supplies weighing up to 50 pounds. Also, because Pharmacy Technicians deal with patients and personal information, possessing good communication skills, a sense of empathy and a desire to help others is highly beneficial. BEFORE YOU APPLY We appreciate your interest in Clark College s Pharmacy Technician program. Please be aware that as a pre-pharmacy technician student, YOU are your own first advisor. It is your responsibility to read and understand all information regarding the Pharmacy Technician program. You must comply with the application process, submit all necessary documents in a timely manner, and meet the entrance requirements to be eligible for selection into the program. 6 CLARK COLLEGE FINANCIAL AID The Clark College Financial Aid Office assists eligible students in meeting their educational expenses through a variety of state, federal and Clark College resources. More specific information on funding availability, the application process, and eligibility determination is available in the Financial Aid Office or on the Clark College website at As part of the Financial Aid application process, all students are required to have formally applied for admission at Clark College. Official copies of academic transcripts from all prior colleges and universities attended must be submitted to the Admissions Office before the application for financial aid can be processed. DISABILITY SUPPORT SERVICES Students with disabilities are encouraged to contact the Disability Support Services Office at (360) or VP to determine appropriate academic adjustments and/or auxiliary aids and services. In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, accommodations for students with disabilities will be considered at the student's request. The student may need to provide documentation of disability to the Disability Support Services Office to support his/her accommodation requests. Documentation guidelines and procedures can be found at Once the student is qualified by DSS as having a disability, requested accommodations will be considered. Accommodations for the classroom, laboratory, or clinical setting will be evaluated according to reasonableness. Accommodations that compromise patient care, or that fundamentally alter the essential functions of the program or activity, are not considered to be reasonable. TRANSFER STUDENTS Once the Health Occupations Credential Evaluations Office has received your Clark College application for admission, Pharmacy Technician application, all official transcripts, and program fees ($50.00 program application, $20.00 one-time admissions application), an evaluation will be completed to determine course adequacy. A letter will then be sent to you regarding your status. COURSE ADEQUACY Course numbers and titles vary from college to college. Adequacy of transfer credits is determined by course content. Course credit hours and adequacy will be determined by Clark College. It MAY be necessary for candidates to submit course descriptions and/or syllabi to determine adequacy. Submitting a complete syllabus* will allow for the most accurate evaluation. Courses accepted as equivalent at one college may not be equivalent at another college. SCIENCE COURSES Requires a copy of the syllabus* from each course you wish to be evaluated. The syllabus must show the appropriate year and quarter you took the course.
