Princeton and the World Princeton University views international experience as an important part of an undergraduate education and expects that all students will spend a significant time abroad in a structured international activity before graduation. The university s already rich menu of international opportunities continues to expand, as does the number of students who intern and/or study abroad. Fifty-five percent of the Class of 2013 participated in at least one structured international activity lasting one month or longer during their time at Princeton. Choosing to spend a significant period of time abroad during your college career is one of the best decisions you ll ever make just ask any Tiger back from his or her travels. Indeed, in our increasingly global society, choosing not to go abroad can put you at a disadvantage academically and professionally. Your time abroad will give you a deeper understanding of other cultures, a more nuanced understanding of your own culture and will teach you quite a bit about yourself. You will be exposed to new ways of learning, living, and seeing the world, all of which will hone your academic skills and prepare you for life and work in a global environment. The Office of International Programs should be your first stop when planning an international experience as part of your undergraduate career at Princeton. Among the office s responsibilities are: advising students about opportunities to study and intern abroad; administering specific funds for summer study and internships abroad; providing ongoing support to students who participate in sponsored international programs; advising students applying for undergraduate and post-graduate fellowships; managing exchange programs. The office also works closely with departments at Princeton that offer programs abroad. Ezinna Nwokonko 14, a politics concentrator, studied abroad at the University of Salamanca in Spain.

Here are some ways to gain international experience while at Princeton: Bridge Year Program The opportunities begin with your acceptance into Princeton, when, as a newly admitted student, you can apply to defer enrollment and spend nine months of volunteer service abroad. The Bridge Year Program takes an innovative approach to learning, offering a chance to work with and for others, while developing linguistic abilities and strengthening intercultural skills. Summer Study Abroad Princeton offers a wide range of credit-bearing summer study abroad programs. In addition, you can earn credit for courses offered by other universities study abroad programs, provided they meet Princeton s standards and are preapproved. Some funding is available for summer study abroad, especially for students on financial aid who attend Princeton and other pre-approved programs. Bridge Year participant Jackson Salter 17 with his host cousin and extended family in Yoff, Senegal. Semester/Year Study Abroad Studying abroad during the academic year provides a critical complement to time spent on the Princeton campus. Learning becomes more than traditional academics as activities outside the classroom enrich your studies. The success of your international experience depends largely on the extent to which you are integrated into the host culture. Studying abroad for a semester or a year allows for deep linguistic and cultural immersion. In most locations, Princeton students studying in non-english-speaking countries take courses conducted in the local language alongside students from the host institution. Most Princeton-approved programs require a specific level of language proficiency, so students are advised to prepare themselves linguistically for term-time study abroad. Students returning from non-english-speaking countries often remark that they never could have achieved the level of fluency they did had they not studied abroad. International Internships As you gain in international experience and linguistic ability, you should consider spending a summer interning or volunteering abroad. Operating in a work environment in another country allows for a highly integrated experience that will further your academic, linguistic, and professional goals. The value of such an experience to future employers cannot be overstated: any internationallyminded organization places a high premium on the ability to work across cultures. Princeton offers a wide array of internship placements abroad through the International Internship Program, Princeton in France, and the German Summer Work Program. Near Eastern studies concentrator Maria Nelson 14 visited the city of Kerak while studying abroad through AMIDEAST in Amman, Jordan. Research Abroad Much of the faculty research at Princeton is international in nature. Many departments and programs offer opportunities to join faculty and graduate students on research projects abroad and/or offer funding for students to conduct their own research abroad. In addition to a number of research internships sponsored by the International Internship Program, students can find summer research opportunities through the Princeton Environmental Institute, the Grand Challenges Program, and the Keller Center for Innovation in Engineering Education. Rising seniors and fall-semester seniors may apply to the Office of the Dean of the College for thesis research funding to support their own research, which may take place abroad. Post-Graduate Programs Opportunities do not cease after graduation. Princeton in Asia, Princeton in Africa, Princeton in Latin America, and the Pace Center offer yearlong fellowships/internship placements to recent Princeton undergraduates. The Office of International Programs advises seniors and alumni on applying to post-graduate fellowships, many of which fund study and research abroad, such as the Churchill, Fulbright, Gates, Marshall, and Rhodes. It is worth mentioning that many competitive fellowship programs favor students who have already developed a global perspective through travel and study. Recent Rhodes, Marshall, Labouisse, Sachs, Gates, and ReachOut award winners at Princeton had spent a significant time abroad prior to taking their fellowships. 2 Offi ce of International Programs, Princeton University www.princeton.edu/oip 3

Planning Your International Experience Once on campus, your first opportunity to study abroad will come in the summer after your freshman year. Many first- and second-year students choose to study in one of Princeton s intensive summer language programs or in a sixweek Global Seminar offered by the Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies. Some also take advantage of international internships. Summer is a popular time for students to go abroad. In the Class of 2013, 51% of students spent at least one summer abroad interning, studying, or conducting research. Getting started on your international education early in your time at Princeton can help you develop strong academic interests on which to build as you move through your Princeton career. Also, going abroad in the summer after freshman or sophomore year is a good way to get a taste of international education to see if a semester or year abroad makes sense for you. Of the students who studied abroad for a My internship in South Africa really opened up my eyes to the ways of life of people in very different regions of the world. I saw strength, dignity, hardship, fear, knowledge, and friendship that I could not have understood without that experience. My study abroad time in Oxford did similar things for me, although in a more academic and social sense. I brought back ways of thinking and scholarship that were fundamental to completing my senior thesis and establishing mentorship connections with professors. Academic Year Study Abroad Where can I study abroad? You can study abroad nearly anywhere in the world. Princeton accepts credit from more than 100 programs/universities in 43 countries. Princeton-approved study abroad programs are listed starting on page 8. Visit the Office of International Programs website (www.princeton.edu/oip) for details. Students may also petition to attend a program not on the list if they have a compelling academic reason. When can I study abroad during term time? Students may study abroad in the spring of the sophomore year, during one or both semesters of the junior year, and in the fall of the senior year. Students may request to study abroad in the fall of the sophomore year as well, but need to have a compelling reason and faculty support. Eligibility Students in both the A.B. and the B.S.E. programs may study abroad. Students normally have at least a B average for the fall and spring semesters of the academic year preceding the semester abroad and the approval of their home department, if they have chosen one. Students who are not in good disciplinary standing may be deemed ineligible to study abroad even if they meet the academic requirements. The Committee on Examinations and Standing grants final approval for study abroad. Application Process and Deadlines The application process for academic year study abroad is straightforward and designed to help you organize your academic program effectively. It is a two-step process. First you apply to the specific university or program abroad, and then you complete the Princeton Study Abroad Approval Form. Students on financial aid also submit a budget for the semester or year abroad. Temple Douglas 14, a physics concentrator pursuing a certificate in material science and engineering, participated in Princeton s exchange with École Centrale in Paris, France. Costs The budget for a semester or year abroad is usually no higher than that for a semester or year on campus. Princeton does not charge extra fees to students who participate in the Study Abroad Program. Unless participating in a reciprocal exchange program run completely by Princeton, students pay no tuition to Princeton, but only the actual tuition for their program abroad. They still, however, remain active and enrolled Princeton students. Students who receive financial aid continue to receive aid while abroad on an approved program during the academic year. Students apply their aid to the full study abroad budget, which includes tuition, room and board, airfare, local transportation, books, and reasonable personal expenses. Summer Study Abroad Many Princeton students choose to study abroad in the summer, often in addition to a semester or a year abroad. Students planning to study abroad for a semester or year in a non-english-speaking program might spend a summer abroad working on their language skills prior to enrolling in a semester program. Many of Princeton s own summer abroad programs provide intensive language instruction. Currently, there are ten summer language programs. Students who want to do scientific field work in the summer may apply to the marine biology program offered in Bermuda by the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and the Princeton Environmental Institute. Another summer option is the Princeton course Archaeology in the Field, which takes place in Greece. The seminars are led by faculty who have created programs of study that are crucially enhanced by traveling to the city and country at the heart of their subject matter. A list of high-quality summer study abroad programs sponsored by other universities and covering a wide range of languages and subject areas is available on the OIP website. Summer courses taken abroad at other institutions must be pre-approved for academic credit by the relevant departmental representative and the OIP. While most students who study abroad in the summer do so on Princeton programs, there are a number of strong summer programs offered by other institutions that regularly attract Princeton students. 6 Offi ce of International Programs, Princeton University www.princeton.edu/oip 7

I chose to study abroad at the University of Cape Town after hearing about other students experiences there, and I was attracted by the country s historical richness, diversity, and beauty. That said, I came to Cape Town with very little knowledge about South African culture and history. After spending a semester learning about its history both in the classroom and through conversations outside of the academic setting, I most appreciated the unique opportunity to really immerse myself in a culture and talk to locals with different opinions. Through these experiences, I was able to understand how South Africa s complex history has shaped the country today. Studying abroad not only gave me a rich knowledge of a new country, but unforgettable adventures, experiences, and friendships that I will always treasure. approved programs abroad asia China, India, Japan, South Korea Academic Year Programs Alliance for Global Education, Shanghai, China Associated Colleges in China, Beijing, China CET Academic Programs, Harbin, China Chinese University of Hong Kong, China Columbia in Beijing at Tsinghua University, China Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies, Beijing, China Middlebury School Abroad, Beijing, Hangzhou, and Kunming, China University of Hong Kong, China Alliance for Global Education, Pune, India Antioch Education Abroad s Buddhist Studies in India, Bodh Gaya, India Brown in India at University of Delhi, India Kyoto Consortium for Japanese Studies, Japan Kyushu University, Fukuoka, Japan University of Tokyo, Japan Waseda University, Tokyo, Japan Ewha Woman s University, Seoul, Korea Korea University, Seoul, Korea Program in Comparative East Asian Studies, Hong Kong, China; Tokyo, Japan; and Seoul, South Korea Princeton Summer Programs Princeton in Beijing, China Princeton in Ishikawa, Japan Hong Kong, China 8 Offi ce of International Programs, Princeton University www.princeton.edu/oip 9

Uyanga Tamir 15, a chemical and biological engineering concentrator, studied abroad during spring of her sophomore year at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. I was initially unsure if I was ready to study abroad as a sophomore. However, I am extremely glad that I did. I was lucky to stay in a residential dorm called the International House, housing undergraduate, master s, and Ph.D. students from all around the world. I was exposed to many new perspectives while living and studying with Australian students and other study abroad students. On the academic side, I was able to take elective courses outside my major, such as Introduction to Development. This class enhanced my knowledge of the social, economic, and political dynamics of today s world as it relates to development. Breaking out of the orange bubble and spending a semester abroad was truly a oncein-a-lifetime experience. approved programs abroad australia & new zealand Academic Year Programs James Cook University, Townsville, Australia University of Melbourne, Australia University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia University of Sydney, Australia University of Auckland, New Zealand University of Canterbury, Christ Church, New Zealand University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand approved programs abroad europe Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany... Choosing to study abroad has been by far the best decision of my academic career. In addition to taking many interesting classes that I could not have taken at Princeton, I got to learn about and experience a different culture fi rsthand, which was invaluable. Living with a host family in Copenhagen offered me a plethora of opportunities to see what life is like in Denmark, and they really treated me like I was a part of the family, which made it extremely fun! Having a semester abroad also gave me a change of pace and the chance to gain some perspective on what I want out of Princeton. I am returning to campus with greater clarity and optimism for the rest of my college years. In addition, taking a course in positive psychology abroad has changed the way I think and see the world and has defnitely infl uenced my academic interests and plans for my JP and senior thesis. My year at Oxford provided the perfect academic complement to a Princeton education. I was able to study mechanical engineering and continue my engineering physics certifi cate with a faculty of world-leading professors that rival Princeton s own. The Oxford system of study is very selfdirected, and the close contact with professors during small-group tutorials was an excellent setting in which to discuss topics in depth and develop a more fundamental understanding of important concepts. Beyond the academics, the year at Oxford also gave me the chance to get involved in a number of new activities, including rowing and ballroom dancing, in which Oxford boasts some of the best teams in the world. Probably the richest part of the Havana semester experience was the balance between the in-class experience truly immersed with Cuban students and professors, all in Spanish and the multifaceted out-of-classroom experience in such a unique, vibrant city. Outside the classroom, I learned so much just walking around observing how people interact, how they look, the technology available to them, etc. Princeton in Cuba allowed me to really engage in my classes, make new friends through university-wide activities and the foreign student network and escape New Jersey s winter! Overall, I am happy when I look back on my experience because I really tried to leave myself open to possibility, and I got out so much more out of the experience than I even expected! 16 Offi ce of International Programs, Princeton University www.princeton.edu/oip 17

The decision to study abroad was one of the best choices I have made at Princeton, both academically and in terms of personal development. Living in Istanbul during a period of rapid political developments in the Middle East enhanced my understanding of Turkey s importance in the region. Friendly, politically aware classmates and engaging courses at Bogaziçi University further enriched my academic experience. In particular, Professor Yesim Arat s course on Turkish politics allowed me to better comprehend the current state of affairs in Turkey and the country s history. Special Opportunities Among the study abroad programs available during the academic year are a number of exchanges that give students direct access to elite universities around the world. In addition, some Princeton departments have created academic programs with universities and research institutes abroad that are intended to fi t easily into departmental programs on campus. The following pages provide an overview of these special opportunities. University of Oxford, England Oxford is the oldest English-language university in the world and a popular choice for highly motivated students. While students can attend individual Oxford colleges as visiting students, Princeton offers two unique programs in cooperation with Oxford: a program at Hertford College for Woodrow Wilson School concentrators and the Oxford-Princeton Exchanges in Biocemistry, Engineering, and History. International Internships Princeton s International Internship Program (IIP) is part of the Office of International Programs and offers guidance and financial support to undergraduates who wish to undertake a summer internship abroad. If you are a freshman, sophomore, or junior interested in spending a summer abroad doing an internship related to your academic major or interests, we encourage you to explore the listings on the IIP website: www.princeton.edu/oip/iip. During summer 2013, the IIP supported 215 students in internships in 50 countries. A few examples of IIP Placements: africa Human Rights Advocacy Center, Ghana Bridges to Prosperity, Rwanda Energy for Opportunity, Sierra Leone Philani Child Health and Nutrition Project, South Africa Bayimba Cultural Foundation, Uganda Digital Solutions, Uganda Students often combine a summer internship abroad with a semester or year abroad. By working abroad before beginning a semester or a year of study, you can ease into daily use of the language before classes start. You may also apply for an internship from overseas if you are interested in extending your stay abroad by interning during the summer. Kenneth Hubbell 16 (right), a chemical and biological engineering concentrator, interned at the Parinaam Foundation in Bangalore, India. I worked on revising the curriculum for the Diksha fi nancial literacy program that Parinaam uses in its education programs. I looked at current content, collected feedback, and communicated the content changes to the trainers. The cultural differences in the offi ce environment, as well as those that arose in the fi eld, were very interesting to observe. I learned a lot of specifi c information about fi nance and micro-fi nance in India, as well as the credit options available to the poor. Overall, I got a good a sense of the general operations of a development organization. IIP has secured many internship placements that are available exclusively for Princeton undergraduates in Asia and the Pacific, Africa, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Middle East. Interns have held positions in government, the media, education, public health, and non-governmental organizations, as well as in financial and research institutions. The IIP staff advises students who wish to find their own internship by directing them to other sources for locating internships and helping them to evaluate the opportunities that they find on their own. The IIP guides students through the application process, facilitates review of applications, and prepares accepted interns for their stay abroad through orientations covering cultural awareness, health issues, research ethics, and safety. The IIP also coordinates the Princeton in France (PIF) Program and the German Summer Work Program (GSWP). PIF provides students with the opportunity to improve their language skills by working side by side with French colleagues. GWSP places students in jobs with German and Austrian companies and institutions. The program offers students an opportunity to improve their language skills while learning about Germany or Austria and aims to strengthen German- American friendship and cultural exchange. middle east Endeavor, Jordan Middle East Scientific Institute for Security, Jordan Royal Scientific Society, Jordan asia & the pacific Innovations for Poverty Action, Bangladesh Nature Conservancy, China Ashoka, India Stifttung Technologies, Philippines A*STAR Institute of Medical Biology, Singapore UNESCO, Thailand europe Danish Institute for Human Rights, Denmark Kilo Architectures, France Pasteur Institute, France European Roma Rights Center, Hungary Bioversity International, Italy Gay Straight Alliance, Serbia Swedish Parliament, Sweden latin america & the caribbean Terracycle, Argentina G5 Evercore, Brazil Ministry of Education, Chile El Nino y la Bola, Costa Rica Clinica Familiar Luis Angel Garcia, Guatemala Mexican Institute of Family & Population Research, Mexico Caribbean Environmental Health Institute, St. Lucia Anthropology concentrator Molly McBee 14 (left) interned with the Bayimba Cultural Foundation in Kampala, Uganda. As a result of my internship, I now want to do business development in third world countries. The internship also made me want to pursue a certifi cate in African studies, and I plan to do my senior thesis on something businessrelated in Africa. It was a great experience to live differently. I learned so much about the world and what I want to do with the rest of my life! 26 Offi ce of International Programs, Princeton University www.princeton.edu/oip 27

Many Princeton students choose to study abroad in the summer, often in addition to a semester or a year abroad. *****Archaeology in the Field in Greece The Princeton Institute for International and Regional Studies offers six-week global seminars in the summer. The seminars are led by faculty who have created programs of study that can only be fully experienced by traveling to the city and country at the heart of their subject matter.
