COMM 110: Fundamentals of Public Speaking (3 Credits) Course Description The theory and practice of public speaking with emphasis on content, organization, language delivery and critical evaluation of messages. Fundamentals of Public Speaking is a course designed to provide students with knowledge about and experience with the art of speaking with an emphasis on public speaking. The aim is to help the student become more comfortable in a speaking situation. Course Objectives By the end of the course students will be able to Analyze an audience for appropriate content, language, and motive Understand and demonstrate the elements of a formal speech, both as a speaker and audience member Demonstrate appropriate non-verbal communications Understand and demonstrate knowledge of different types of speeches Be more comfortable in speaking situations Textbook Verderber, Rudolph and Kathleen S. Verberber. The Challenge of Effective Speaking 15th Edition. 2012. Bemont, CA: Wadsworth. ISBN: 978-0-495-91134-0. This textbook contains a CD ROM which you may use in the course. Software: Microsoft Word is needed for all online classes. If additional software is needed for a particular course, it will be indicated in the online course schedule. Speeches Each student will be required to present 4 formal speeches, plus a final test speech. These speeches can be on any school-appropriate topic of your choosing. If you are unsure of the appropriateness of the topic, choose something else. One of each of the following speeches will be given: 1. Expository Speech 2. Demonstrative Speech 3. Persuasive Speech 4. Speech Using Visual Aids The student will present the speech either on campus on a specified date or post it to the course or to YouTube in the discussion for the speech. Uploading the speech to YouTube has worked quite well in the past; if you need help uploading the speech, there are short videos on YouTube which help you through the process. Only one on-campus time for each speech will be arranged. It will be arranged to fit into the schedules of the majority of people using this option. Posted speeches need to have an audience of at least 5 members. Children under the age of 15 are not considered an appropriate audience. These five people will need to be recorded before the speech begins. Failure to record the audience will result in a deduction of points for the speech. Rubrics for speech grading will be provided for each specific speech. It will be

located in the unit it is assigned. Quizzes, Tests and Final Speech Term quizzes will be given throughout the course. These are timed. Be sure to click the Submit button when you are finished. A final test will be given at the end of the course. It will cover the terms and concepts about the art of speaking and presenting a formal speech. A final speech, worth 100 points (50 points for content, 25 points for organization, 25 points for delivery), will be presented at the end of the semester. This is the only speech in which choices of a topic will be given to you. Assignments Assignments and quizzes within each chapter are due within specified time frames. Refer to the Schedule for specific due dates. Assignments not completed by the specified deadline but submitted late will have 10% of grade points deducted at instructor's discretion. No points will be assigned for incomplete assignments. Be prepared to spend at least four (4) hours per week in the online class, studying, and completing assignments. All assignments should be turned in via the Dropbox (located at the top of the course) unless otherwise specified. You are strongly encouraged to make hard copies of your assignments and communications with the instructor to avoid losing data in the case of technical issues. At the first sign of problems, contact your Internet Service Provider (ISP) immediately. Online Discussions The online discussions are required activities, and full participation is essential for your success of this course. Each posting must be relevant and substantive (at least 50 words in length.) Responses to classmates must also be relevant and substantive (more than "I agree.") Your first entry is expected by Wednesday each week. Check back into the Discussion to respond to your classmates by Saturday. Your responses need to be on more than one day. Points will be earned in the Gradebook for your participation in the assigned discussions. Points will be assigned using the following method and may be computed on a combination of columns 1 through 3: *Bonus points may be given for exceptional postings or more than 3 reaction postings. Correct grammar and spelling is essential, including punctuation and capitalization. It is the intent of NDSCS to develop employable skills in students and to prepare them for the workplace. Written communication is one of those skills. If this isn't your strength, develop a habit of performing a spell check in MS Word before submitting your work or posting to a threaded discussion. NDSCS classes. For example, a three-credit class may require approximately nine hours of work time a week for the student. This amount may vary by class and by student. Policies and Procedures NDSCS online students should be aware of various policies and procedures such as those shown below. Attendance - Students are expected to log into their online classes frequently during each week of the semester and to submit course work on time to meet due dates set by the instructors. Attendance and class participation is monitored and students not submitting work in their online classes may be dropped from the class. Review the Attendance Policy for further details. Computer Access - It is the student's responsibility to maintain access to a working computer and Internet connection to keep up in online class assignments. Because computer problems do occur, students should have a plan for alternative computer access in case of computer problems. Students will be able to access their online classes from any computer with an Internet connection. Refund Policy/Withdrawal Refund Schedule Academic Calendar - Online classes follow the same calendar as regular on-campus classes. They begin with the semester begins and students do not need to log in at specific days/times but instructors do set due dates for assignments and exams to be submitted so there is structure to the classes. Online classes are not self-paced but do provide flexibility in that they are accessible 24/7 to allow students to work around other commitments when doing their course work. Academic Integrity - Integrity is an NDSCS core value and there is an expectation that all students, as members of the college community, adhere to the highest levels of academic integrity. Dishonesty in class, laboratory, shop work or tests is regarded as a serious offense and is subject to disciplinary action by the instructor and dean of the respective division. Types of Misconduct Cheating: Intentionally using or attempting to use unauthorized materials, information, or study aids in any academic exercise. Fabrication: Intentionally and unauthorized falsification or invention of any information or citation in an academic exercise. Facilitating academic dishonesty: Intentionally or knowingly helping or attempting to help another to commit an act of academic dishonesty. Plagiarism: Intentionally or knowingly representing the words or ideas of another as one's own in any academic exercise.

Student-Instructor Communications While an online class is available 24 hours a day and offers greater flexibility for the student and instructor, keep in mind that your instructor will not be available 24 hours a day. Exams Online instructors may require a proctor for online exams. When the semester begins, check your course information for the proctor form. Schedule Online classes follow the same academic calendar for start and end dates as regular oncampus classes. While there is no set time for students to be logged into a class each day, instructors do set due dates for assignments and exams. Students should lot into classes frequently to keep up with announcements and to keep up with course work. Online classes are not self-paced. You may want to print the for NDSCS Academic Calendar reference during the year.
