Outline Introduction Geospatial training in Tanzanian Universities Curriculum Development Geospatial curriculum at ARU Teaching resource Job market for Geospatial graduates
Introduction Defining terms: Geospatial Technology, Geospatial Sciences & Geomatics are normally used interchangeably A systemic, multidisciplinary, integrated approach to selecting the instruments and the appropriate techniques for collecting, storing, integrating, modeling, analyzing, retrieving at will, transforming, displaying and distributing spatially geo-referenced data from different sources with well-defined accuracy characteristics, continuity and in a digital format (Gomarasa, 2009).
Introduction Teaching and Learning Geospatial Technology education/training entails formal or informal education At certificate, Diploma, Undergraduate and Postgraduate. On-the job training and short courses
Introduction Top Research Agenda with extensive application of GIS Climate Change (CCIAM) REDD Reduced carbon emission Natural Resource Management Public Health
Introduction Community Service GIS development Training Help procure Esri software Example: Tanzania Electricity Supply Company, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, National Bureau of Statistics
Introduction In Tanzania the use and application of geospatial technology is common in many fields such as:» Engineering (Many branches of engineering)» Geology,» Agriculture,» Geography,» Health informatics,» Environment
Introduction Geomatics and Geoinformatics is considered an added advantage to self-employment or employment in public and private sector. Geospatial education creates opportunities for spatial perspectives in many specialties.
Geospatial Training in Tanzanian Universities Geospatial Education is increasing Universities Very few tertiary colleges offer Geospatial training Full dedicated geospatial programs at: Ardhi University University of Bagamoyo Other universities have geospatial subjects mainly GIS and Remote Sensing in their curriculum.
Geospatial Training at Ardhi University Ardhi University (ARU) history dates back to 1957 training surveyors at certificate level It is a public higher learning institution It offers academic degree program in land related disciplines Land Management Urban Planning Architecture Building Economics Environment, Civil engineering and Land Surveying or Geomatics Today ARU Produce graduates with Undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications (i.e PgD, BSc, MSc/MA and PhD)
Geospatial Training at Ardhi University School of Geospatial Sciences and Technology Dedicated school for academic programs in Geomatics and Geoinformatics It has two departments offering the following undergraduate degree programs: o Bachelor of Science in Geomatics (4 years duration) o Bachelor of Science in Geoinfomatics (4 years duration) o Bachelor of Science in Information Systems Management (3 years duration). IT and SE will be offered starting next academic year
Geospatial Training at Ardhi University School of Geospatial Sciences and Technology Post-gradua Technologist Diploma in Geoinformatics (GFM4) jointly offered with ITC of the Netherlands Postgraduate Diploma in Geomatics (2 years duration) Master of Science in Geomatics (by thesis only) (18 months) Master of Science in Geomatics (by coursework and dissertation) (18 months) PhD in Geomatics (36 months)te programmes offer the following specialties:
Geospatial Training at Ardhi University School of Geospatial Sciences and Technology Technologist Diploma in Geoinformatics Nine months Geoinformation diploma (GFM4) Joint programme between ARU and the Netherlands International Institute for Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation (ITC) It is a modular and intensive international programme Targeting in-service staff responsible with the implementation of production tasks Esri has donated software for this programme for the past 8 years (two weeks ago we received 30 licenses for the GIS labs)
Geospatial Related Subjects in other Ardhi University Programs Other schools also have incorporated geospatial subjects in their curriculum Main subject are Geographic Information Systems, and Remote Sensing

Geospatial training in other Universities University of Dar es Salaam S/N Degree Program Geospatial subjects 1 B.A. in Geography and Environmental Remote Sensing Studies Geographic Information System Surveying and mapping science 2 BSc. In Computer Science Introduction to GIS BSc in Geology B.Sc. in Engineering Geology Introduction to GIS Remote Sensing and GIS Remote Sensing and GIS
Geospatial training in other Universities Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA) The use of geospatial technology for research and teaching has significantly improved There is a GIS and Remote sensing course in the Master of Science course in Agricultural Engineering Faculty members have been using GIS for research and teaching purposes
Geospatial training in other Universities University of Dodoma Largest University in Tanzania in terms of students and number of degree programs it offers High need of geospatial tools for teaching and research. Employed Geospatial staff to start a Geoinformation courses and possibly a programme
5 Forest Training Instritute -Olmotonyi Offering certificate and diploma program in forestry Geospatial training in other Universities Tertiary Colleges No. Institute Program 1 Southern and Eastern Africa Mineral Offers short course in: Centre (SEAMIC) GIS and remote sensing applications Geo-information management and archiving 2 Ardhi Institute -Morogoro Offering Certificate and Diploma course in Land Surveying 3 Ardhi Institute - Tabora Offering certificate and Diploma course in Cartography 4 Madini Institute-Dodoma Offering certificate and diploma program in Mining Engineering, Mineral Exploration
Curriculum and Curriculum Development Curriculum and curriculum development is core in academic training It involves many stakeholders such as employers, and students It also considers market survey and tracer study
Curriculum and Curriculum Development Themes for undergrduate Curriculum The curriculum is organized into themes All the themes combined cover the professional content of the curriculum Each semester has a main theme with project subjects
Curriculum and Curriculum Development Themes for undergrduate Curriculum The first two years have common themes as follows: 1 st Year: Introduction to Land Surveying and Cartography (Semester I), Topographic mapping (semester II). 2 nd Year: Electronic Surveying and Photogrammetry (semester I), Cadastral Surveying (semester II).
Curriculum and Curriculum Development Themes for undergrduate Curriculum The themes in the third and fourth years of study are program specific as follows: i) Geomatics 3 rd Year: Engineering Surveys (semester I), Satellite and Mining (semester II). 4 th Year: Under Water Mapping (semester I) and Dissertation (semester II). ii) Geoinformatics 3 rd Year: Geographic Information Systems (semester I), Digital image processing and visualization (semester II). 4 th Year: Spatial Data Infrastructure (SDI) (semester I) and Dissertation (semester II). iii) Geodetic Sciences 3rd Year: Control surveys (semester I), Geodesy (semester II). 4th Year: Advances in geodesy (semester I) and Dissertation (semester II).
Teaching Resource Both students and faculties need good learning, teaching and research environment There has been a challenge for conducive learning environment However, the situation is being improved and things are getting better after sensitization at management level.
Teaching Resource 2 Dedicated GIS Labs The School has acquired new teaching equipments worth 1billion To my knowledge we are now well equipped than any other department in East and Central Africa.
