3 11. Mode of Study All listed Masters Courses will be delivered by Coursework and Dissertation. Classes will be held from the OUT Centre in Kibungo, Rwanda, at selected times during the executive year. Each unit will be taught for a period of hrs continuously over a duration not exceeding six days. This is the Executive Mode. However, some candidates may wish to study some of the courses by distance. Please indicate the preferred mode of course work study by ticking the appropriate box in the selection Table above. 12. The Masters Programmes of the Open University of Tanzania, in Rwanda will be delivered by the Executive mode, where learners will be required to attend classes for a continuous period of one or two weeks in every two months. Classes will take place from its centre in 4

5 Kibungo, just behind the Ngoma District building. The duration of the coursework is usually twelve months. The research phase follows immediately after the course work and lasts between six and twelve months, depending on the students effort. 6 SECTION C: GUIDELINES FOR PREPARATION OF A TENTATIVE RESEARCH PROPOSAL FOR REGISTRATION TO A MASTERS DEGREE BY THESIS OR TO Ph. D DEGREE NOTE: These guidelines are only for those applying for a degree program done purely by thesis (research) without any course work. 1.0 The applicant should give a clear title of the research topic which will be the basis for deciding on the Faculty in which the research will be conducted and guiding the faculty on the search for supervisor(s). 2.0 STATEMENT OF THE RESEARCH PROBLEM AND LITERATURE REVIEW 2.1 A Brief Statement of the Research Problem Under this heading the applicant should outline the research problem, giving the background to it, and its significance. 2.2 Brief Literature Review The applicant should also give a brief review presenting the principal literature on the problem area, and stating what has been done on the research problem. The applicant should list the preliminary references cited in the text of the statement or research topic (tentative research proposal). Following conventional methods, e.g., arranging authors names in alphabetical order, giving details on the year of publication, journal volume, pages, etc. 2.3 Research Objectives The applicant should show the principal objectives of the intended research, outline what gaps of knowledge will be filled through the research, and what advances will be made when the research plan is executed. Provisional hypotheses should be presented, if already formulated. 2.4 Research Methodology and Design The applicant should briefly indicate the instruments to be used and methods to be adopted in carrying out research. 6
