The center is a private institution that offers postsecondary training to individuals preparing for careers in allied health professions and continuing education to practicing health care professionals. The training center is in full compliance with the California Education Code. Training programs and courses are recognized and approved by a myriad of local state and national licensing boards and professional associations. All instructors hold advanced degrees and professional licenses and each brings years of experience in their fields of expertise. Requirements for California Certification As a Phlebotomy Technician Training Requirements for California certification in phlebotomy may vary depending upon the applicant s level of recent experience. Certified Limited Phlebotomy Technician (CLPT) Applicants with limited experience (limited to skin sticks) seeking California certification as a Limited Phlebotomy Technician (CLPT) and who are able to provide acceptable proof of experience may only be required to complete a minimum 20 hour course in Basic Phlebotomy. Upon successful completion participants will be issued a State approved training certificate. This document along with documents described at the bottom of this page must be submitted to the State Department of Public Health before a State license can be issued (see Basic Class schedule on page 4). CLPT s may only perform skin punctures (skin sticks). Certified Phlebotomy Technician I (CPT I) Applicants with six months or more experience within the prior five (5) year period who are able to provide acceptable proof of experience may only be required to complete a minimum 20 hour course in Advanced phlebotomy. Upon successful completion participants will be issued a State approved training certificate. This document along with documents described at the bottom of this page must be submitted to the State Department of Public Health before a State license can be issued (see Advanced Class schedule on page 4). Applicants with no experience are required to complete the 6 weeks Full Course in Phlebotomy. At Family Health Services (FHS) training centers, these students are required to complete a minimum 20 hour course in Basic Phlebotomy, a minimum 20 hour course in Advanced Phlebotomy, a minimum 40 hour laboratory course in Applied Phlebotomy and a 40 to 80 hour Clinical Externship in a healthcare setting. The following documents constitute the complete application packet. (1) Phlebotomy Technician Application All applicants are encourage to apply online @ dhs/lfs (2) Documentation of Training and Experience Completed and signed statement of phlebotomy training and or experience. This document must contain original signatures. (3) Documentation of Education Official school transcripts or GED document that shows a minimum high school education. (4) Passport size photos Two photos required (5) Copy of recent National Phlebotomy Certificate issued by a State approved national certifying 3 agency (not required for CLPT applicants)
San Diego Imperial Counties Classroom (instructor led) San Diego Imperial Counties Classroom (instruction led) In San Diego, courses are available at the Family Health Services Training Center. A new course begins on the 1 st Friday of each month. The class in Basic Phlebotomy is presented in three (3) 7 hour sessions on the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am until 3:30pm. The Basic class is followed by the Advanced class and is presented in three (3) 7 Hour sessions on the second Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 8am 3:30pm. Basic Class (Monthly) 1 st Friday, Saturday and Sunday / 8am 3:30pm Advanced Class (Monthly) 2 nd Friday, Saturday and Sunday / 8am 3:30pm In addition to the above basic and advanced classes, applicants with no experience are required to complete a minimum 40 hours of laboratory practical training. During this period, students are introduced to the various blood withdrawal techniques and devices. Each student is allowed to perform venipuncture and dermapuncture on mannequins and live subjects under close one-on-one supervision by licensed personnel. Week #6 Internship Internship* 7am-4pm *Internship rotations begin as early as 4-8 weeks after graduation. The Clinical Internship (Healthcare facility) Upon successful completion of laboratory practical sessions, each student is assigned a 40-80 hour internship at a FHS affiliated hospital or clinic laboratory. During this segment, students are expected to demonstrate proficiency in the various techniques of blood withdrawal including the successful performance of at least 50 venipunctures and 10 skin punctures. In addition all students are required to observe at least two (2) arterial punctures. Completion of classroom, laboratory and the clinical internship constitutes the Full course in phlebotomy. Afterwards each graduate is awarded a FHS state approved training certificate. A copy of the FHS training certificate along with documents outlined on the bottom of pg (3) is submitted to California Department of Health Services (DHS) for licensing. State required documentation showing proof of experience is provided by FHS to all graduates of the Full course. 5
Education Requirement All applicants must possess at least a high school education or GED equivalent. Original transcripts may be submitted directly to DHS by the education institution or sealed copies may be submitted by the applicant. * National Certification Exam (not required for certified Limited Phlebotomists Applicants for CPT I certification must pass a State approved national certifying exam. This exam is available here at the training facility at the end of the course. Examinees that pass will be awarded a national certificate in phlebotomy by the certifying agency. A copy of this document must be submitted when applying for state licensing (please see list of documents on page 3). To enroll in the course 1. Complete the registration form (see page 7). 2. The $150. Registration fee is deducted from all refunds. For example, if you are enrolled and have paid the full cost of $2500 and you now find it necessary to withdraw before the first session, your refund would be $2600 less $150 or $2450. If the class is canceled by us you would receive a full refund. Students who discontinue training after the course begins may be eligible for a refund but must submitt a written request within thirty (30) days. Refunds in these cases are pro-rated based on the total number of hours attended. The difference between this amount and the total amount paid may be refunded.
