2 Why Certify? Certification is a way to assess whether an individual possesses the skills and knowledge required for successful job performance. By becoming certified, and maintaining competency year after year, the individual indicates to an employer that he/she: Has met standards that have been established and verified by a third-party organization Is dedicated to maintaining quality in the workplace What s in a Name? Although some of AMT s credentials bear the designation Registered, it is important to note that ALL individuals credentialed by AMT are considered Certified, much like Registered Nurses, Registered Dieticians and Registered Respiratory Therapists are certified by their respective boards. The new Federal CMS Meaningful Use regulations require that Medical Assistants who enter orders in the Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) system be credentialed. MA students will need to be certified in order to meet this changing job requirement.

3 Why AMT? AMT is Well-Respected in the Industry Established in 1939, AMT is a PREMIER certification agency with a well-established national and international reputation. AMT Validates Credentials AMT carefully reviews applicants credentials to ensure that they are appropriately trained in an accredited institution and/or have the requisite experience necessary to successfully take and pass an AMT exam. Low hurdles to qualifying for a certification exam is typically not well received by employers, can damage a school s reputation, and be a disservice to students. AMT Promotes High Exam Security AMT devotes considerable resources to ensure secure exam administration and procedural standardization. All of its exams are conducted in tightly controlled testing environments. To maintain this integrity, AMT does not allow instructors or other third-party individuals to proctor and/or have any financial interest in administering exams. AMT Supports its Certificants To promote continued learning and growth, AMT s certified individuals automatically become members of AMT and have at their disposal a variety of tools and services, including multiple continuing educational options and leadership opportunities. AMT is a Cost-Effective Choice When reviewing the total cost of certification compliance over several years, AMT stands out as the best and most economical professional choice. AMT also provides a number of cost-effective continuing education options, and yet does not designate how or from whom it is obtained.

4 Registered Medical Assistant RMA(AMT) Registered Phlebotomy Technician RPT(AMT) Graduate from a medical assistant program whose program or institution is accredited by an organization approved by the US Department of Education* Graduate from a formal medical assistant training program of the US Armed Forces Graduate from an accredited phlebotomy technician program, which must include at least 120 hours of didactic instruction Complete at least 1,040 hours of acceptable work experience as a phlebotomy technician within the last three years Work as a medical assistant for at least five out of the past seven years, no more than two years of which may have been as an instructor Pass a phlebotomy technician examination given by another certification organization approved by AMT, or a state licensing agency (no AMT exam is required) Currently instruct in an accredited medical assisting program AND complete a course of instruction in a healthcare discipline AND teach a medical assisting discipline for a minimum of five years, OR work in a healthcare setting for three years Pass an examination given by another certification organization approved by AMT (no AMT exam is required) All applicants must complete a minimum of 50 successful venipunctures and 10 successful skin punctures. AMT is an approved phlebotomy certification organization in the State of California. * Program should include a minimum of 720 total program clock hours, including a clinical externship of no less than 160 hours For more details, visit

5 Medical Technologist MT(AMT) Medical Laboratory Technician MLT(AMT) Graduate from an accredited medical technology program with a bachelor s degree in medical technology Graduate from an accredited college or university with an associate s degree in medical lab technology or equivalent Graduate from an accredited college or university with a bachelor s degree AND complete at least 35 semester hours of coursework related to clinical laboratory sciences AND either complete an accredited academic program in medical technology OR complete at least one year of approved lab Complete at least two years (60 semester hours) of courses in any accredited college, including 25 semester hours in clinical laboratory science disciplines AND six months of approved lab experience Complete a 50-week US military laboratory medical training program experience within the last five years Pass a generalist examination given by another certification organization approved by AMT, or a state licensing agency, AND be currently employed or have recent laboratory work experience (no AMT exam is Pass a generalist examination given by another certification organization approved by AMT, or a state licensing agency, AND be currently employed or have recent laboratory work experience (no AMT exam is required) required)

6 Certified Medical Administrative Specialist CMAS(AMT) Registered Dental Assistant RDA(AMT) Graduate from a medical office administrative program whose program or institution is accredited by an organization approved by the US Department of Education* Be certified as a Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent, and have a minimum of two years experience working as a medical administrative specialist Work as a medical administrative specialist for at least five out of the past seven years * Program should include a minimum of 720 total program clock hours, including a clinical externship of no less than 160 hours Graduate from a dental assisting program whose program or institution is accredited by an organization approved by the US Department of Education Graduate from a dental assisting training program of the US Armed Forces AND work for one year as a dental assistant Work as a dental assistant for a minimum of three years All applicants must be certified in CPR by the American Heart Association or American Red Cross or show proof of comparable training

7 Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant CMLA(AMT) Allied Health Instructor AHI(AMT) Complete an academic course of study that is a minimum of 200 didactic clock hours (at least 100 of which are devoted to the study of fundamental lab technology) AND a minimum of 120 clock hours of approved laboratory experience Complete a minimum of 1,040 hours of work experience within the past three years in which lab technology was the primary focus (at least 520 hours devoted to performance of clinical lab duties) routes to qualify for certification (no AMT exam is required): Graduate from an accredited school with a healthcare-related course of study AND have related teaching experience in at least two of the past five years Hold professional certification in their field of allied health instruction from a nationally recognized certification organization AND have related teaching experience in at least two of the past five years Clinical Laboratory Consultant CLC(AMT) Certification is granted to applicants who earn points across areas such as education, certification and professional activities. (No AMT exam is required.)
