1 CTE - Radiologic Technology and Fluoroscopy The Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program s assists current California X-ray Technician permit holders to begin at the most advanced point possible toward completing the Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program. At East Los Angeles Occupational Center, students meet the State required curriculum hours for Diagnostic Radiologic Technology program through transfer of credit and work experience. Mission Statement: The Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program is committed to providing accessible and affordable quality education to assist current California State Certificated X-ray Technicians in developing and achieving their shortterm goal of upgrading their skills and knowledge toward becoming competent radiographers in a process of lifelong learning. IMPORTANT: Having a misdemeanor or other felony conviction(s) may restrict an individual s eligibility from ARRT certification. Contact the ARRT Ethics Department at (651) ext. 580 or their website for any questions or concerns regarding this matter. All internship sites require criminal background checks and/or drug screenings. Prior to the onset of the program, potential candidates will undergo a background check administered by Los Angeles County Health Services (LAC-USC Med Center HR). Findings could result in internship sites refusing a student s participation and/or prohibit the continuation/starting in the program. Additionally, candidates are responsible for providing proper documentation for the fingerprinting (DOJ and FBI) requirements. Be advised that enrollment in this program without a social security number may hinder ability to start/complete externship and/or eligibility status for the state/national licensing requirements. GOALS Goal: Students will demonstrate clinical competency. Student Learning Outcomes: Students will demonstrate competency in the application of occupational and radiation safety procedures. Students will demonstrate competency in producing quality radiographic images. Goal: Students will demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving skills. Student learning Outcomes: Students will produce quality images while evaluating them for appropriate positioning, technique, and other influencing factors. Students will be able to easily adapt to non-routine situations. Goal: Students will demonstrate effective communication skills. Student Learning Outcome: Student will communicate effectively with patients. Students will communicate effectively with radiologists, radiographers, and other healthcare professionals. Page 1 of 6
2 Goals: Students will demonstrate professional aptitude. Student Learning Outcomes: Students will perform the essential tasks related to an entry level imaging professional in a reliable and responsible manner. Students will model professionalism. Graduates will learn another modality, have been involved with the training of another imaging professional, and or attained/attaining higher education. DESCRIPTION The Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program is designed to provide the essential information needed by student radiographers to pass the State certification examinations, including the ARRT s Fluoroscopy and the ARRT-National Certification. Through a variety of closely integrated didactic and clinical educational experiences, student radiographers develop both the necessary skills and abilities needed to meet the requirements of their job description, as well as provide optimal patient care. The students are prepared clinically in healthcare facilities supervised by the instructor and staff members. Passing the State and National examinations allows graduates to work as a Radiologic Technologist under a supervising licentiate. Program Length The Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program is 1400 hours, with hours per week of instruction. Accountability The Radiologic Technology Program design and curriculum are based on national standards established by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JCERT). JRCERT ( / 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 2850, Chicago, IL / / Fax / mail@jrcert.org) serves as the accrediting body for the Department of Education as well as the California Department of Health Services ( Program Effectiveness The Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program s most recent success rate can viewed via the JRCERT website This effectiveness data includes statistics on credentialing examination pass rate, job placement, and program completion rate for East Los Angeles Occupational Center and other schools. Credentialing Examination Rate January 2010 through December 2014 This figure represents the number of students that passed the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) Certification examination on the first attempt within six months of graduation from the program. The rate reflects an average over a five year span. The programs credentialing examination pass rate from 2010 through 2014 is 98%. During this five year period, 58 graduates tested within six months of completing the program and 57 of them passed on the first attempt. Job Placement Rate January 2010 through December 2014 This figure represents the number of students that acquire a job in the Radiologic sciences within twelve months of graduation versus the number that graduate and are actively seeking employment. The job placement rate for 2014 was 100%. The program s job placement rate from 2010 through 2014 is 100%. During this five year period, 64 graduates were actively seeking employment and 64 Page 2 of 6
3 graduates found employment within 12 months of completing the program. Completion Rate January 2010 through December 2014 The completion rate is calculated annually by identifying the number of students that began the program divided by the number of students that actually completed the program. The program s completion rate for 2014 was 88%. Seventeen students started the program, however 2 dropped out due to personal reasons. The program s completion rate for 2010 through 2014 is 81%. During this five year period, 79 students started and 64 completed the program. ENROLLMENT Prerequisites Must be 18 years of age at time of enrollment. Current California Identification Card or California Driver s License or a current U.S. Passport. Proof of a current California State X-Ray Technician permit verifying California state licensure in at least the chest, extremities, and torso skeleton at minimum. At minimum, an Associate s degree (AA or AS) from an accredited college or university. Entrance Date Offered at East Los Angeles Occupational Center, the Radiologic Technology/Fluoroscopy Program starts on August of the current year (class meets M-Th from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.). The selection process for program candidates occurs during the months of March or April before program begins. In addition, applicants are given a Radiography Examination to determine the knowledge base of Radiologic Technology. Interview/Mandatory Orientation The qualifying applicant will be notified of an interview and/or mandatory orientation date. All students are expected to attend. Failure to appear on the scheduled date will result in placement forfeiture. At the mandatory orientation, students receive and review the Student Handbook, which contains the policies of the Radiological Technology/ Fluoroscopy program. Health Clearance After notification of acceptance into the program, the student must obtain a satisfactory physical examination using the form provided by the RT Instructor or Program Director. The physical examination/vaccination form must be submitted 1 week after the onset of the program. Students will not be allowed to continue in the program without a valid physical examination. CPR & First Aid Requirements & Fire Safety Card An American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid certificates are due after the start of class and must be presented prior to clinical rotation. The CPR & First Aid training and certificates must be specifically for the Healthcare Provider/Professional. A Fire Safety Card will also be required. Page 3 of 6
4 Clinical Obligations Students must be able to attend clinical internship Monday thru Friday from 7:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. In order that students gain the knowledge and skills required of trauma radiology in the Medical Emergency Department (MED), students will also have a three week evening clinical rotation: Monday thru Friday 1:00 p.m p.m. At no time will the didactic, together with the clinical hours exceed 40 hours per week.
