Ebsworth Life Center Project Update Preliminary Plans for the Construction Period We are well into the preparations for life without the Great Hall during the construction of the new Ebsworth Life Center. The joyful adventure of worship in Great Hall on November 11 th was a terrific warm-up for the excitement and changes that construction will bring to us. We hope that the planning and preparations described below will excite you about the changes to come, assure you that much has been done to make the construction period as easy as possible, and encourage you to get involved where you can during this time of change. We also hope that as you review the plans and preparations you will gently and lovingly share your concerns, reach out with your fears about the coming change, and remember to love and hold one another in the love of Christ. Changes to the Campus & During the last two weeks of April, the Great Hall will be emptied and fenced off as we prepare for the start of construction. Office, construction, and bathroom trailers; several storage containers; and construction machinery will be brought on campus, which will tie up parts of the north and east parking lots. A diagram of campus with the layout of trailers, containers, site fencing, and construction traffic routes traffic is included below. Also at the end of April, the church will begin to take on a different look as we prepare use it in more and varied ways during the construction period. To provide gathering and meeting space, we are going to remove the pews from the east and west transepts and temporarily replace them with stacking chairs. This will allow us to use these areas for coffee hour, meetings, and classes. You may also see folding tables and other items stored in the back of transepts that we will need for the events and classes that will be hosted there. Office Trailers, Onsite Storage & Bathrooms As mentioned, we will be bringing two 24' x 60' office trailers onto the campus to house the staff and some program activities during the construction period. Each of these trailers has four enclosed offices, a set of restrooms, and a large open area that will provide a temporary home for our staff and volunteers. These trailers will be located where the trailers that housed the City of Medina staff were located (east parking lot across from the church). We are also going to place a 10' x 18' locking storage container adjacent to the trailers that will provide storage for maintenance equipment and other large items that we need on campus during construction. In addition, we will be bringing a bathroom trailer onto the campus that will be located adjacent to the front of the church to provide restrooms during the construction period. And yes, we are going for the nice ones! Page 1 of 5 Prepared by Greg Murray Printed 3/29/2013
Worship & Parish Programs As you will see below, most all of our regular programs will continue to meet on campus. This is going to challenge us all to say a few more prayers, use an extra dash of creativity, bring an abundance of willingness to go with the flow, and to let the Holy Spirit lead us in new ways. Sunday worship will remain virtually unchanged except that the church will take on a different appearance with the pews in the transepts replaced with chairs. The biggest change you will notice on Sundays will be in the time in between services and in the parking. Coffee hour, choir practice, and adult Forum all will have to take place in the church. This obviously creates a schedule conflict. We are working through scheduling solutions for these activities, and we will be sharing more details as we get closer to the start of construction. Because of the trailers and construction equipment much of the parking lot will be unavailable to us for the duration of construction. We will have to use on-street parking and the limited number of stalls that will still be available. We are working with the City of Medina to make sure that we can use as much street parking as we need during construction. During the construction period, Metro parking will be discontinued. This will ease the burden during the week, but, in any event, patience, courtesy, and early arrival will help all of us. The list below shows where we anticipate worship and program activities will take place during construction. For the most part programs will continue at their regular times, but specific schedules will be made available closer to the start of construction. We are still working on temporary homes for a few regular program activities that require the kitchen such as the Sandwich Makers and the Men s Breakfast and a few other programs. This process is underway and should be completed by mid-february. Parochial and financial records that do not need to be kept on campus are going to be moved to an offsite record storage company. Those records that do not need to be maintained any longer are going to be destroyed. This will free valuable space during construction and in the future. Furniture, equipment, and fixtures that will be reused in the new Ebsworth Life Center but do not need to remain on campus during construction will be stored for the duration of construction. We are working to find warehouse space for this purpose. Furniture, equipment, and fixtures that will not be reused in the new Ebsworth Life Center, will be donated where possible to other organizations or recycled. We will also be having two events on campus where parishioners and invited organizations can come and take items that will not be reused. The dates for these events have not been set. We are also developing a room-by-room list of furniture, fixtures, and equipment that will be needed for the new Ebsworth Life Center. As this list is completed, we will be sharing it with you. Phone System, Computer Network & Audio/Visual Equipment The phone system, computer network and audio/visual equipment we are using in the Great Hall are all inadequate to handle the expanded needs of the new Ebsworth Life Center. We are in the process of working with multiple vendors to identify the best systems to meet our future needs and to be sure that as we begin construction that we are putting the right infrastructure in place to handle the systems we need to serve the new facility. As we share the room-by-room list of furniture, fixtures and equipment mentioned above, we will also be providing details about the phone system, computer network and audio/visual equipment we need for the new building.
