Congratulation on 6o years anniversary of Harbin Engineering University! Hidekazu Yoshikawa, PhD Professor Emeritus Kyoto University Master Professor Harbin Engineering University 1

Kyoto University was founded in 1897 in Kyoto, a historical city where a unique balance is achieved between tradition and innovation. Kyoto University has advanced cutting-edge education and research of the highest standards in diverse fields ranging from the humanities to the social sciences. At present, the university has 10 faculties, 18 graduate schools, 14 research institutes, and 20 educational institutes and other establishments. There are approximately 9,300 graduate and 13,500 undergraduate students, 3,400 faculty members, and 2,600 administrative staff members. 2

Kyoto University s academic style is characterized by free-thinking, self reliance, and open-minded dialogue. Many students take the initiative to pursue study and research based on their own personal interests and concerns Researchers are challenging uncharted frontiers and achieving innovative results. The strength of our methods is proved by most notably eight Nobel Prize laureates who undertook groundbreaking research during their time at the university. 3

A prominent recent acknowledgement was the award of the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to Dr. Shinya Yamanaka of our Center for ips Cell Research and Application (CiRA) for his epoch-making discoveries in the field of stem cell research. The launch in 2007 of the Institute for Integrated Cell- Material Sciences (icems) marked the first step of the Japanese government s WPI (World Premier International Research Center Initiative) program. Dr. Yamanaka and his team have opened new realms of possibility in biology and medicine, which are expected to pave the way for further remarkable advances in basic research into biology, medicine, and regenerative medicine. 4

Kyoto University offers a diverse range of degree programs entirely in English in addition to regular Japanese-taught courses. Currently, the offered programs comprise one undergraduate and fifteen graduate/mba courses. The G30 Project aims to enhance the opportunities and academic environment for international students in Japan. Students from approximately 100 different countries and regions, lend the university s campuses a rich cultural diversity. For prospective students who have graduated from a university in China, Hong Kong, or Taiwan, and wish to enroll at Kyoto University as a researcher, master s or doctoral student, the Admissions Assistance Office (AAO) provides support for candidates from China before they submit their application to the relevant graduate school. 6

The KYOTO-U OpenCourseWare (OCW) project was launched in 2005 in an effort to make the university s lectures widely available through the internet. It aims to bring the benefits of Kyoto University s education activities to as many people as possible It is not only to students and academics, but also to members of the general public seeking to further their personal knowledge. In this way the project aspires to the worldwide pool of human knowledge. The KYOTO-UOCW website is available in both English and Japanese. 7

Kyoto University has joined edx,the international consortium of 27 prestigious universities including the two founding institutions, Harvard and MIT, that offers free online courses known as MOOCs(Massive Open Online Courses) as the first Japanese university. The consortium has approximately 900,000 registered students from around the world who are able to take any of the over 60 courses that edx is currently providing. The first edx course from Kyoto University will be Chemistry of Life by Professor Motonari Uesugi at the Institute for integrated Cell-Material Sciences. 9

The course will start next spring and those students who completed homework and passed the examinations throughout the course will be awarded a certificate of mastery under the name of KyotoUx. Joining edx enables Kyoto University to reach out to hundreds of thousands learners globally with its high-quality education as well as to actively learn from and build upon each consortium member institution s educational innovations. 10

International collaboration agreement was established in 2007 between CNST/HEU and Graduate School of Energy Science, Kyoto University. Teachers and student exchange: four graduate school students and teachers came from HEU to Kyoto University. Mutual collaboration to conduct international symposium, seminars and workshops I hope the HEU will in future expand the collaboration with Faculty of Engineering, Graduate Schools of Engineering and Information Sciences, Kyoto University. 12

Kyoto University is committed to its mission to pursue harmonious coexistence within the human and ecological community on this planet. We invite students and researchers from around the world to our campuses in the heart of Kyoto to become inspired by that ambitious ideal, and not only become specialists in their chosen fields, but also to help tackle the world s most urgent problems and contribute to the global community. HEU 60 Years Anniverary 13

Thank you very much for your kind attention! 14
