: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 This guide provides instructions for installing PowerChute plus for Windows 95 and for installing related products and features. It contains the following sections: PowerChute plus Product Contents Hardware Requirements Software Requirements Preparing for the Installation Removing an Earlier Version of PowerChute plus Performing a New Typical Installation Performing a New Custom Installation Performing a Reinstallation Performing a Plug and Play Installation Performing an Installation through SMS Removing PowerChute plus, Version 5.0.1 PowerChute plus Product Contents PowerChute plus for Windows 95 provides the following: The installation program, which installs PowerChute plus and lets you view this installation guide and the release notes online during the installation. A UPS Monitoring Module (ups.exe), which communicates with the UPS via the serial port. A User Interface Module (pwrchute.exe), with which you can control and configure PowerChute plus through the drop-down menus and dialog boxes and can monitor the UPS through the Main Screen. A User s Guide available in two formats -- as online help files in HTML format and as a manual that you can either use online or print. The installation program lets you choose to install the online HTML help files, which you then access through the Help menu of the User Interface Module s Main Screen or by selecting the Online Help item from the PowerChute plus program group. The manual is available for downloading from APC s Web site at http://www.apcc.com. (If you are installing from a CD-ROM version of the product, the manual is included on the CD-ROM.) The HTML files contain the same information as the online manual. Release Notes available for reading or printing during the installation, and also available to be downloaded from APC s Web site. Hardware Requirements PowerChute plus requires the following hardware from American Power Conversion: An American Power Conversion UPS. PowerChute plus can communicate only with a UPS manufactured by American Power Conversion. Only users of smart signaling UPSs (Smart-UPS, Matrix-UPS, or newer Back- UPS Pro models) can access the full functionality of PowerChute plus. One custom UPS 9-pin serial interface cable (940-0024C for Smart-UPS models or 940-0095A for newer Back-UPS Pro models). The Smart-UPS and newer Back-UPS Pro product lines support smart signaling. (A 2
: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 Software Requirements 940-0020B cable for simple signaling UPSs is available for Back-UPS users in an upgrade kit you can obtain from APC.) 9-pin male to 25-pin female serial port adapter. This option can be obtained from APC. You must provide the following hardware: An Intel x86 compatible computer. An available RS-232 serial port dedicated to the UPS, set as follows: Bits Per Second: 2400 Data Bits: 8 Parity: None Stop Bits: 1 Flow Control: Advanced Settings: Xon/Xoff Disable FIFO PowerChute plus supports but does not require a mouse. (See the section Screen Navigation without a Mouse in Chapter 3 of the User s Guide: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 for information on screen navigation by keystrokes.) Software Requirements PowerChute plus for Windows 95 requires the Windows 95 operating system. You cannot run PowerChute plus for Windows 95 on a Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups operating system. Preparing for the Installation To prepare for installing PowerChute plus, perform the following tasks described in this section: Remove any version of PowerChute plus earlier than version 5.0, as described in Removing an Earlier Version of PowerChute plus. Decide the type of installation you want to perform, and then read the section of this installation guide that applies to that type of installation: Performing a New Typical Installation describes how to perform the simplest installation procedure, using mostly default settings. In a typical installation, you cannot choose which modules or features of PowerChute plus to install. The installation program installs the UPS Monitoring Module, the User Interface Module, and the on-line help files, but none of the optional features which you can select in a custom installation. Performing a New Custom Installation describes how to perform a custom installation on a machine on which PowerChute plus is not already installed. A custom installation lets you choose which modules or features of PowerChute plus to install. APC recommends this type of installation for experienced users only. Performing a Reinstallation describes how to perform a reinstallation to add any or all of the modules or features of PowerChute plus, version 5.0.1. 3
: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 Removing an Earlier Version of PowerChute plus Performing a Plug and Play Installation describes how to attach the APC UPS and communications cable to your PC so that Windows 95 can detect the new hardware and prompt you for installation information. APC recommends this type of installation for users with a Plug and Play APC UPS. Performing an Installation through SMS describes how to perform an installation through Microsoft s Systems Management Server (SMS). For a new custom installation, or a reinstallation, you may want to print the section that applies, so that you can refer to it easily during the installation or later. For a new typical installation, read the relevant section online for an overview, and then follow the instructions in the dialog boxes themselves. The installation program does not install the installation guide. If you want a copy of the entire installation guide for future use, print a copy during the installation or download it from the APC Web site. (If you are installing PowerChute plus from a CD-ROM, the installation guide remains available on that CD-ROM). Removing an Earlier Version of PowerChute plus First remove any 4.x version of PowerChute plus before installing version 5.0. Installing version 5.0 without first removing version 4.x leaves some version 4.x files on your system and may result in unpredictable operation. APC does not support installing PowerChute plus 5.0.1 for Windows 95 when a previous version of PowerChute plus remains installed on your system. To remove PowerChute plus, version 4.x, perform the following steps: 1. Stop the User Interface Module. 2. Move the program remove.exe from your PowerChute installation directory to your Windows 95 temp directory. 3. Run remove.exe. If you run remove.exe from your PowerChute plus installation directory or any of its subdirectories, remove.exe will not completely remove PowerChute plus from your system. Caution: If you first install version 5.0.1 of PowerChute plus on a machine, i.e. to an alternate installation directory, and then attempt to remove the 4.x version by using remove.exe, you will remove essential components of your 5.0.1 version as well. Always remove version 4.x before installing version 5.0.1. Performing a New Typical Installation If you are performing a typical PowerChute plus installation with no existing PowerChute plus installation on your system, read this entire section before proceeding with the installation. APC recommends this type of installation for inexperienced users. In a typical installation, the installation program automatically installs the UPS Monitoring Module, the User Interface Module, and the on-line Help files and does not offer any additional features or components. Perform the following steps: 1. If you are installing PowerChute plus using the installation program downloaded from the APC Web site, the program initially displays a welcoming dialog box and then the licensing agreement. In the welcoming dialog box, select the radio button labeled I would like to continue with the installation now, and click on the Next> button. Read the displayed licensing agreement, and click on the Yes button if you agree to comply with the terms of the agreement. 4
: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 Performing a New Typical Installation 2. In either version of the installation program (the Web version or the multi-product CD-ROM version), in the Choose the type of installation dialog box, choose the Typical radio button and select the location to which you want to install PowerChute plus. a. To install PowerChute plus to the default installation directory displayed (c:\program Files\Pwrchute), click on the Next> button. b. To install PowerChute plus to a location other than the default directory displayed, click on the Browse button. In the Choose Directory dialog box, select a local drive and directory in the Drives: and Directories: list boxes, or type the full path name of a local drive and directory in the Path: field. Do not use the Network... button in the Choose Directory dialog box. You must install PowerChute plus locally on the machine on which it will run. c. Click on the OK button to confirm your selection. 3. In the Setup UPS Parameters dialog box, click on the auto-detection icon to have the installation program automatically detect the type of your UPS and the Comm Port to which it is attached. If your UPS is correctly connected and is turned on, the installation program automatically detects the UPS Type and Comm Port for a Matrix-UPS, a Smart-UPS, or a newer, smart signaling Back-UPS Pro, but not for a Back-UPS. If the installation program cannot automatically detect the UPS Type and Comm Port, it assumes you have a Back-UPS and are using COM1. See Hardware Requirements for additional information on port settings. If auto-detection fails, select the correct UPS Type and/or Comm Port in the list boxes provided. For example, if your UPS is a Back-UPS, and you are using a Comm Port other than COM1, select the correct Comm Port in the Comm Port: list box. To move to the next dialog box, click on the Next> button. 4. You must reboot for PowerChute plus to operate correctly and to ensure the protection provided by your UPS. If you are using the Web version of the installation program, in the Installation Complete dialog box, choose whether you want to reboot now or later, and click on the Finish button. If you are using the multi-product CD-ROM version of the installation program, the installation program does not provide a reboot option at the end of the PowerChute plus for Windows 95 installation, but instead lets you select another product to install. If you do not want to install another product, click on the Exit button and reboot your system manually. For information on important configuration tasks to perform after the installation is complete, see the following in Chapter 4 in the User s Guide: PowerChute plus for Windows 95, or in the PowerChute plus online help system. If you did not originally install or accidentally deleted the PowerChute plus version 5.0 UPS Monitoring Module, User Interface Module, or online help files, and now want to add that part of PowerChute plus to your existing installation. To perform a reinstallation, perform the following steps: 1. If you are installing PowerChute plus using the installation program downloaded from the APC Web site, the program initially displays a welcoming dialog box and then the licensing agreement. In the welcoming dialog box, select the radio button labeled I would like to continue with the installation now, and click on the 7
: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 Performing a Reinstallation Next> button. Read the displayed licensing agreement, and click on the Yes button if you agree to comply with the terms of the agreement. 2. Select the destination directory for the installation in the Select Destination Directory dialog box. APC does not recommend reinstalling to a different directory to avoid overwriting your earlier 5.0 or 4.x version. If your machine has two versions of PowerChute plus in different locations, you cannot safely use the automated 4.x remove or 5.0.1 uninstall programs to remove the earlier version. To install PowerChute plus to the default installation directory displayed (the directory of your existing PowerChute plus installation), click on the Next> button. The PowerChute plus components you select for installation will overwrite those components, if they are present in the existing PowerChute installation directory. However, the installation program saves the old pwrchute.ini, pwrchute.log, and pwrchute.dat files as pwr_ini.sav, pwr_log.sav, and pwr_dat.sav in the installation directory. 3. In the Select PowerChute Components to Install dialog box, select any of the following PowerChute plus modules: the PowerChute plus Client (the User Interface Module), the UpsServer (the UPS Monitoring Module), and the PowerChute plus On-line Help (the HTML Help files). To select all three components, click on the Select All button. To deselect all three components, click on the Clear All button. 4. For a machine that will perform UPS monitoring and configuration and also be monitored, select the PowerChute plus Client (User Interface Module), the UpsServer (UPS Monitoring Module), and optionally the PowerChute plus On-Line Help files. a. For a machine that will monitor and configure UPSs attached to other machines on the network but that will not itself be monitored, select the PowerChute plus Client (User Interface Module) and, optionally, the PowerChute plus On-Line Help files. b. For a machine whose UPS will be monitored and configured remotely only, select the UpsServer (UPS Monitoring Module). If you do not select PowerChute plus Client (User Interface Module), you will be unable to configure PowerChute plus locally from that machine except by directly editing the pwrchute.ini file. Editing the.ini file incorrectly can cause problems in the functioning of PowerChute plus and can put the protection provided by your UPS at risk. APC recommends that you edit the.ini file only to implement the few parameter settings that cannot be set through the User Interface Module. c. If the purpose of this installation is to add a module or the online help files that you accidentally deleted or chose not to install in your previous installation, select only that component. Caution: Never install the User Interface Module for a new PowerChute plus version while retaining a UPS Monitoring Module from a prior version. d. Click on the Next> button to confirm your selection. 5. 8

Performing an Installation through SMS Installing PowerChute plus via Microsoft s Systems Management Server (SMS) requires that you first create an installation script that SMS can use to perform an unattended installation on one or more Windows 95 workstations. You perform an installation on a machine while software by InstallShield records your keystrokes and mouse clicks as the script. You then provide that script to SMS. 11
: PowerChute plus for Windows 95 Performing an Installation through SMS Recording Installation Scripts Before recording any scripts to install PowerChute plus using SMS, review all the installation options available by doing one or both of the following: Review the file sample.iss, provided in the \Program Files\Pwrchute\SMS folder as part of the PowerChute plus installation software (i.e., downloadable from APC s Web Site at http://www.apcc.com or, if you installed PowerChute plus from a CD-ROM, available on that installation CD-ROM in the \Intel\Pchute95\SMS directory). The sample.iss file shows all options available during installation and uses comments to explain the options. Do not attempt to use this.iss file to perform an installation; it is for informational purposes only. Perform a test installation according to the instructions in Performing a New Custom Installation. During this test installation, decide what installation directory path names and what installation options to use in the installation scripts you will subsequently record for installing PowerChute plus using SMS. In the Program Files\Pwrchute\SMS folder, APC also provides a setup.iss script file that you can use for a typical installation. Therefore, you do not need to record a script for the simplest kind of installation described in Performing a New Typical Installation. A typical installation uses all default options and does not let you choose optional features. The default installation path name in this setup.iss file is c:\program Files\Pwrchute. To use this script to install PowerChute plus to a different directory, first edit the following line in the file to replace c:\program Files\Pwrchute with the installation directory of your choice. szdir=c:\program Files\pwrchute To record installation scripts, perform the following steps. 1. To start recording a script, execute the appropriate setup command: a. If you are using the version of the installation program downloaded from APC s Web site, execute the following command line: setupex -r b. If you are using the version of the installation program from APC s multi-product CD-ROM, from the folder Intel\chute95, execute the following command line: setup -r 2. Perform the installation, choosing all options you want recorded in the script. a. Choosing the autodetect option for determining UPS type and Communications Port ensures that subsequent installations performed with the script will also perform autodetection. You do not have to create separate scripts for each UPS type or Communications Port setting on your network. b. In the Setup Complete dialog box, choosing the option to reboot your computer now will not necessarily cause an immediate reboot at the end of an SMS installation of PowerChute plus. The SMS Package Command Manager typically restarts a machine once after installing multiple packages. The completed script file is in your Windows folder and has the name setup.iss. 3. To create multiple script files containing different selections of PowerChute plus installation options, do the following. a. Rename the setup.iss script file you just created in Steps 1 and 2 so that it will not be overwritten. Use a name descriptive of the options the script contains. b. Execute setup -r again (or setupex -r if you downloaded PowerChute plus from APC s Web site), and perform an installation with a different set of options, and rename the new setup.iss file with a descriptive name. Repeat this procedure for each different set of installation options you want to record, deinstalling before recording a script for another new installation, or leaving the existing installation when recording a script to perform an update installation. 12

Configuring for SMS Installation To obtain a package definition file (PDF) and other files required for installing PowerChute plus through SMS, do one of the following: If you are using an installation CD-ROM, copy the contents of the Intel\Pchute95\SMS directory from your CD-ROM.
