The FACE Distance Learning Program The Distance Learning Program is available to ESL students who are unable to attend regular classes offered at the school. The program can also be accessed by students who desire supplemental ESL curriculum to study at their own pace. We offer a variety of materials at all ESL Levels. We have ESL workbooks, DVDs, CDs and online lessons for every level - Beginning ESL to Advanced. Students can practice grammar, listening, speaking, reading, & writing. We also have workplace fluency and life skills materials that can help students reach their language goals. Students must check-in with a teacher (face-to-face and online) to monitor progress, take quizzes and take the CASAS tests. The summer courses are shortened for the 6 week session. Summer 2012 Online ESL Courses The summer course is 6 weeks long. Your teacher will help you decide which online course is right for you. There are 6 courses to choose from. The courses offered are: USA Learns 1 (Beginning) This course uses an online classroom-based teaching video that is organized in 20 thematic units. There is a speaking practice in the course. The summer session is 14 units. USA Learns 2 (Intermediate) This course uses video stories presented in 20 units. All instructional activities are based on the language and actions of the video stories. There are short writing activities in the course. The summer session is 14 units. USA Learns Practice English & Reading (Intermediate) This course had 42 readings based on real life situations. Each story contains a reading, vocabulary development, comprehension questions and a writing prompt. The summer session is 14 units. PETW 2 (Intermediate) Workbook, DVD, and online course This workbook series of 24 units teaches traditional grammar, vocabulary, sentence construction, comprehension and problem-solving. It also illustrates the skills necessary to find employment and excel in the work environment. A DVD of videos accompany the workbook. Online dictations for listening and speaking are available. The summer session includes 4 units and 4 online dictations. Contact USA (Advanced) book and online course This is a 12-unit reading a vocabulary textbook. This book presents readings that offer cross-cultural perspectives and topics such as cities, food, culture shock, retirement, equality, racial issues, taxes, and freedom of religion. Online dictations for listening and speaking are available. The summer session includes 4 units and 4 online dictations. Advanced ESL Moodle Course (Advanced) This online course has 18 units. Activities include listening, reading, writing, vocabulary development, and grammar practice. The summer session is 4 units. 2
Requisites Students need: Computer access Internet access Headset, microphone, speakers Email address Attend orientation and wrap-up sessions Pay registration fee Pay a refundable deposit for any borrowed materials Take 2 CASAS tests Summer 2012 Certificates To earn a certificate, students need to complete the requirements of the summer course, which includes online course content and 2 CASAS tests. Students must complete at least 40 hours of online instruction to be eligible for a certificate of participation. 3
Orientation: Students are required to attend a face-to-face orientation scheduled on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 12:00-3:00 pm in Room 3. During the orientation, students will, o Fill out forms o Pay registration fees o Pay a deposit for any take-home materials o Receive an orientation to the course o Choose a course and register for the online course o Meet the teachers o Take a CASAS test Wrap-Up: Students are required to attend a face-to-face wrap-up scheduled on Tuesday, August 30, 2012 12:00-2:00 pm in Room 3. During the session, students will, o Return any checked out materials and receive a refund for deposit o Take a CASAS test o Pick up certificates 4
Fremont Adult & Continuing Education Online ESL Courses Distance Learning Study-English-at-Home Summer 2012 Student Expectations Welcome to the Online ESL Distance Learning Program! Here are some important things to keep in mind as a Distance Learning Student. To be a successful online learner, follow these guidelines: 1. Spend at least 1 hour per day or 5-7 hours per week on your online coursework every day. 2. Contact your teacher by email if you have questions. 3. Choose a quiet place to study. 4. Participate in any online discussions as directed by your teacher. 5. Attend both classes. 6. Submit your assignments on time. 7. Write down new words. 8. Take 2 CASAS tests.
