How to setup a network printer using HP Universal Printer Driver This patch is only usable on HP T5730 Thin Client and up. The Printer also has to be networked and be PCL6 driver compatible in order to use this driver. Using the HP Universal Printer Driver will allow you to setup a printer using either the compatible printer search or by specifying an IP address to a printer. There are two setting in the HP Universal Printer Tool you will have to change but making this change will allow you to connect to a non-hp IP printer. Using this document you will be able to install both HP and non-hp PCL6 compliant networked printer. If you are trying to connect to a non-hp printer, the printer will have to be attached to your network and have a valid IP address. Initial Setup Process 1. First, go to http://www.smartstartinc.com/hdfiles and click on HP Universal Printer Driver. 2. This will prompt you with 3 options; Save, Run and Cancel. 3. You are to select the Run option. 4. Once it has fully downloaded the file it will execute the file and reboot your computer. (The downloading of the file can take several minutes depending on your internet connection speed.) 5. Once Windows starts up, it will begin the process of installing the HP Universal Printer Driver. 6. After the installation completes, the Printers and Faxes folder will open. You will notice a new printer in the folder called HP Universal Printing PCL 6. You will also have various prompts appear explaining the process. 7. Your next step will be to click on the new printer that is described above. This will select the printer and the window will display some new options on the left side of the window. 8. This can take a few seconds before you will see the HP Universal Printer Tool appear. During this time it is highly suggested that you do not attempt to do other functions. Once the Wizard appears it will look like the picture below. 9. You now need to make the changes to two settings in the wizard. The way you access these settings is by clicking on the Settings link located in the lower left corner of the wizard. See picture below for location of Settings link. Smart Start Inc. 10. When you click on the settings link you will be presented with the following window. The window will have two tabs name General and Device Verification. Each tab will have 3 options in each and in both tabs you will select the last option. See picture below to make sure you have selected the correct option. a. Under General Tab select the following option: i. Only prompt if the last known printer is no longer available b. Under Device Verification Tab select the following option: i. Verify port can be opened for printing (low) 11. Now that we have made the changes to the wizard settings, you can click on the OK button. You will now have to select an installation method. Option 1 will be using an IP Address which is very helpful if you are trying to connect to a non-hp printer. How to connect to an IP base printer Use the following process if you are trying to connect a network printer to the thin client. A network printer is a printer that is directly connected to the network using a Ethernet cable. The printer is then setup with a valid IP address which allows you to directly print to it. Following the steps below will allow you connect to such a printer even if it is not an HP product. 1. From the main wizard click on the following option Enter a Printer Address under Find a Printer. 2. When you click on the option above you will be presented with the following window. 3. In the Enter a Printer Address you will provide the IP Address of the printer you are trying to connect too. Once you have entered that address, you will click on the OK button. Make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the network before you before you click on the OK button. *When connecting to a non-hp printer, you will see a message appear in the Printer Information section. The informational message will have a blue question as its icon. The message is normal if you are trying to connect to a non-hp printer. Smart Start Inc. 4. After you click on the OK button the wizard will try to locate the printer using the IP address you provided. If the printer is found it will start to communicate with it and add it to the list of found printers as shown below. 5. Now, you will click on the listed printer using your left mouse button. This will highlight your IP printer in blue. You will also have to check the box that is located below the Printer Information section. The box you will check is labeled Add this printer to my printers and faxes folder. Below is a picture of the wizard with these options selected. 6. You will now click on the OK button. This will initiate the setup and installation of the IP printer. You will be displayed the following window where it is showing you that it is communicating with the printer. Smart Start Inc. 7. After the window above, the wizard will display this following window. Which shows you that it is adding the printer to the Printers and Faxes Folder in windows. This option was check in step 5 of How to connect an IP based Printer. 8. Once it has added the printer to your computer. You will be presented with the following window. This is just confirming that the printer was successfully added to your system and it is ready for use. So, you will just need to click on the OK button to close the window. 9. When you click on the OK button in step 8, this will trigger the properties windows to open for the HP Universal Printer. You should not have to make any changes here so, you should just close the window. 10. The installation wizard will also trigger the Printers and Faxes Folder to open. Make sure that before you close the folder, you set the new printer as the default printer. You will then continue through the rest of the prompts and at the last prompt the system will reboot. How to install a compatible HP printer using Search for Network Printers What this feature does is scan you network for compatible HP printers. Once it has completed its search, it will display a list of printers found on your network that you can install on the thin client. This list is not restricted to a specific HP printer. So, as long as the printer is compatible it will allow you to install it using the HP Universal Print Driver. The steps below will help you accomplish the printer installation. 1. From the main wizard window, you will click on the option labeled Search for Network Printers 2. Clicking on the Search for Network Printers will bring up a window, which will show you the available printers that were found on your network. This list will only display compatible HP printers that can use the HP Universal Printer Driver. This window will look similar to the one below. ***If the printer is not listed make sure it is turned on and connected to the network. 3. From the list of available printers, you will select the one you want to install and press the OK button. This window will also give you basic information about the printer you are going to install on the right hand side under the section labeled Printer Information. 4. This will begin a process of preparing the printer for installation. The next setup will be to check the box below labeled Add this printer to my Printers and Faxes folder. This is located below the Printer Information section of the wizard. You can see this below 5. After you click on the OK button on the window above. The wizard will begin the process of Identifying, installing and adding the printer to the Printers and Faxes folder. This can be seeing on a similar window as shown below. Smart Start Inc. 6. Once it has added the printer to your computer. You will be presented with the following window.
