Academic Advisor and related issues Extraordinary circumstances While you are at university, you may incur study delay through extraordinary circumstances such as family issues, illness, performance disability or other extraordinary circumstances. Study delay must be reported to the academic advisor as soon as possible. This is important for potential financial support from the Graduation Fund (see www.rug.nl/studievertraging) and for your Binding Study Advice. Sometimes the BSA Committee can make an exemption when you do not meet the BSA requirements through extraordinary circumstances. Student Service Centre The Student Service Centre (SSC) is the student counselling expertise centre of the University of Groningen. Our student counsellors, psychologists and trainers work together to provide an integrated package of student support with the aim of helping students with their studies. We can prevent or remove possible impediments to your study progress so that you can develop fully during your time at university. The SSC has a wide range of support facilities information and advice, individual discussions, shortterm therapy and a wide variety of workshops and training courses. You can find more information about the services of the SSC and the courses, training and workshops which are offered to students via www.rug.nl/ssc Contact academic advisor The academic advisor of the bachelor s and master s degree programme in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics is Mirjam Nederveen. She can help you in case of: - extraordinary circumstances - study delay - doubts about and choices in your degree programme - study planning and study skills - other problems and questions about studying and your degree programme. Her email address is academicadvisor.math@rug.nl and you can book appoinments via mnederveen.youcanbook.me 2

You can search for courses as well as for degree programmes. Elective in period 1 (semester 1a) The bachelor s degree programmes in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Applied Physics, Astronomyhave a joint first period. Each degree programme offers two mandatory courses within its own programme and one elective that can be chosen from one of the other programmes. The elective gives you the opportunity to get a taste of one of the other degree programmes and to switch to one of the other degree programmes after the first period without study delay. For the bachelor s degree programme in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics we provide a list of electives from which you need to choose one course. The names of the the degree programmes between brackets indicate to which programme you can switch after the first period when choosing that particular course. The course descriptions are available in Ocasys (see below). List of electives for the Bachelor s degree programmes Mathematics and Applied Mathematics: Introduction to Logic (Computer Science and Mathematics) Physics Laboratory 1 (Physics, Applied Physics and Astronomy) Molecules: Structure, Reactivity and Function (Chemistry and Chemical Engineering) Please let us know which of these courses you are planning to choose, before Monday, August 17, using this online form: http://goo.gl/forms/fgmkvnh3a7. Your final choice for one of these three courses must be made during the Welcome Day on 28 August the latest. This is important, as your schedule depends on the tutorial group you will be assigned to. Please note that besides filling in the form you will also have to register for the course of your choice in ProgRESSWWW (see below). 3

Calculus 1 and the basic mathematic skills test The course Calculus 1 starts with a digital test of your basic skills in mathematics. In case you do not pass this test you are obliged to take remedial teaching classes and can re sit the test a few weeks later. The test is scheduled on Tuesday 1 September at 14:00 15:00 hrs in the Aletta Jacobs building. On Monday, August 31, there are practice sessions in preparation for the test. Schedules The schedules of the programmes and courses are available via: http://rooster.rug.nl:81/#layoutmode=wide&header=true Please make sure you select the right year. Please check the schedules on a regular basis, as changes are still being made. Lectures are always offered to the whole cohort at once. For the tutorials and/or practical sessions the cohort is divided into smaller groups. Which tutorial/practical group you will be part of, will be announced on 31 August. Location You can find the location of the lecture rooms on the map at the end of this document or via http://www.rug.nl/about us/how to find us/studentsmap/studentsmap.html?map=onderwijsruimten All our lecture rooms are located at the Zernike complex More information can be found via the following sites as well http://www.rug.nl/fwn/organization/locaties/ http://www.rug.nl/staff/location/zernike plattegrond Course and Exam registration Registration for course units and examinations is compulsory and is done via ProgRESSWWW (see below) Timely registration for course units is means that you register at least one month before its start. The only exception to the one month registration deadline are the courses of the first period of the first year of the bachelor s degree programme: these courses are still open for registration in the first week of the academic year. Nevertheless, please register for these courses as soon as possible since you will then have access to the online course information provided by the lecturer. If you register for a course unit, you are to appear at least for the first session of the course unit. ProgRESS WWW does not allow you to register for more than four courses in a period. In case you want to register for more courses in one term, please contact your study advisor. Registration for written examinations is linked automatically to the registration for course units In case you attend a (re )exam you need to be present at the start of the (re )exam. In case you register for a course unit you are automatically registered for the exam. In case you fail the exam you are automatically registered for the resit. Despite the automatic exam registration the student remains responsible for being properly registered for (re )exams. There is an opportunity to sign out until at least 1 week before the date of the examination. 4

It is possible to register separately for an exam or re exam, i.e. without registering for the course.
