Academic Advisor and related issues Extraordinary circumstances While you are at university, you may incur study delay through extraordinary circumstances such as family issues, illness, performance disability or other extraordinary circumstances. Study delay must be reported to the academic advisor as soon as possible. This is important for potential financial support from the Graduation Fund (see www.rug.nl/studievertraging) and for your Binding Study Advice. Sometimes the BSA Committee can make an exemption when you do not meet the BSA requirements through extraordinary circumstances. Student Service Centre The Student Service Centre (SSC) is the student counselling expertise centre of the University of Groningen. Our student counsellors, psychologists and trainers work together to provide an integrated package of student support with the aim of helping students with their studies. We can prevent or remove possible impediments to your study progress so that you can develop fully during your time at university. The SSC has a wide range of support facilities information and advice, individual discussions, shortterm therapy and a wide variety of workshops and training courses. Information about start of the programme and the first period Welcome Day There are several welcome activities planned for 28 August 2015 in room V5161.0253. Attendance is mandatory. The schedule will be provided in a separate document. Ocasys Ocasys is the online university course catalogue. It contains short descriptions of course contents, required literature, etc. The web address is: www.rug.nl/ocasys Ocasys contains information about the outline of the degree programmes as well. You can search for courses as well as for degree programmes. Elective in period 1 (semester 1a) The bachelor s degree programmes in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Applied Physics, Astronomyhave a joint first period. Each degree programme offers two mandatory courses within its own programme and one elective that can be chosen from one of the other programmes. The elective gives you the opportunity to get a taste of one of the other degree programmes and to switch to one of the other degree programmes after the first period without study delay. For the bachelor s degree programme in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics we provide a list of electives from which you need to choose one course. The names of the the degree programmes between brackets indicate to which programme you can switch after the first period when choosing that particular course. The course descriptions are available in Ocasys (see below). Your final choice for one of these three courses must be made during the Welcome Day on 28 August the latest. This is important, as your schedule depends on the tutorial group you will be assigned to. Please note that besides filling in the form you will also have to register for the course of your choice in ProgRESSWWW (see below). 3
Calculus 1 and the basic mathematic skills test The course Calculus 1 starts with a digital test of your basic skills in mathematics. In case you do not pass this test you are obliged to take remedial teaching classes and can re sit the test a few weeks later. The test is scheduled on Tuesday 1 September at 14:00 15:00 hrs in the Aletta Jacobs building. On Monday, August 31, there are practice sessions in preparation for the test. Please check the schedules on a regular basis, as changes are still being made. Lectures are always offered to the whole cohort at once. For the tutorials and/or practical sessions the cohort is divided into smaller groups. Which tutorial/practical group you will be part of, will be announced on 31 August. The only exception to the one month registration deadline are the courses of the first period of the first year of the bachelor s degree programme: these courses are still open for registration in the first week of the academic year. Nevertheless, please register for these courses as soon as possible since you will then have access to the online course information provided by the lecturer. If you register for a course unit, you are to appear at least for the first session of the course unit. ProgRESS WWW does not allow you to register for more than four courses in a period. In case you want to register for more courses in one term, please contact your study advisor. Registration for written examinations is linked automatically to the registration for course units In case you attend a (re )exam you need to be present at the start of the (re )exam. In case you register for a course unit you are automatically registered for the exam. In case you fail the exam you are automatically registered for the resit. Despite the automatic exam registration the student remains responsible for being properly registered for (re )exams. There is an opportunity to sign out until at least 1 week before the date of the examination. 4
It is possible to register separately for an exam or re exam, i.e. without registering for the course. ProgRESSWWW does not allow you to register for more than five exams in a term (this only holds for exams of courses which are offered in a term of 8 10 weeks). In case you want to register for more courses in a term please contact your study advisor. Information systems Personal account After enrolment, you will receive a student number and a personal computer account by email. A student computer account, consisting of a login name and a password, provides access to several websystems and storage servers. This includes: - access to the Faculty Novell servers, for the use of computer applications - access to the Internet - use of a personal data storage server - use of an e mail account - access to the electronic learning environment of the University of Groningen - access to ProgRESSWWW, where you can enrol in courses and exams, and view your study results You will need the following to log in: a login name and a password. Your login name is made up of your student number preceded by an s. Your initial password will be sent per email. You can change your password at myuniversity.rug.nl/infonet/studenten/ict/werkplek/ E mail Your e mail address is one of the primary means of personal communication of the University and the Faculty. For example, if one of the university employees (teacher, academic advisor, etc.) wants to send you a personal message, he/she will send it to your university e mail address. Your e mail address is consists of name@student.rug.nl. Your name is made up of your initials and your surname, separated by dots. In case of frequent surnames, a number may be added by the administration. Your university e mail will also be used by the university to send you important messages such as requests for enrolment for certain courses or alterations to the timetables. Students are expected to check their mailbox every day. For your own convenience, you may choose to forward your university mail to your private mail (use the settings after login). The University of Groningen uses Google Apps for Education which gives students permanent access to their e mail (Gmail), calendar (Google Calendar), chat (Google Talk), documents (Google Drive) and web pages (Google Sites). Online Learning Environment In the course of August, you will get access to our new Student Portal, which will provide you with the following information: Information and announcements about your programme (e.g., updates, events, forms, etc.) Course information, course documents and online exams Access to group activities (e.g., online project collaboration) ProgRESSWWW ProgRESSWWW is a web based application used by the University of Groningen. Students need to enrol for modules and exams well in advance via ProgRESSWWW. ProgRESSWWW can also be used to view your study results.
