Fall 2013 In this issue: Welcome Help Desk - Best IT Resource More Email Storage SkyDrive, Office Web Apps Faster Response Times Training Workshop Schedule Classroom Technology Computing Research Support Connecting to UW Wireless Personal Computer Help Find Information Technology Software Microsoft Updates Welcome Back From UW IT! Information Technology is here to help make your time at UW productive and enjoyable. Below is information on our most commonly used services. UW IT cares about your feedback. Please let us know what you think of our services, including ways we can serve you better, by emailing UWITcare@uwyo.edu. IT Help Desk Your Best IT Resource Contact the UW IT Help Desk for all your IT needs. 766-4357 or userhelp@uwyo.edu 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The IT Help Desk provides immediate Tier 1 support and can quickly assist you with solving most common technology problems. If the Help Desk cannot solve the problem they will escalate it to our next level, Tier 2, support. We have new remote tools to assist in solving the majority of problems quickly. More Email Storage with Office 365 During the summer UW faculty and staff email accounts were migrated to Office 365. This changes your email storage from 500 MB to 25 GB, more than 50 times as much space! This change will not require any action on your part when you use Outlook or Outlook Web Access. If you use a mobile device, you will need to update your accounts on those devices. Here are the How To web pages for configuring an iphone or ipad and for configuring an Android device. SkyDrive and Office Web Apps on Office 365 In addition to more email space, Office 365 comes with SkyDrive. When you log into your Office 365 Email, you now have access to 25 GB of SkyDrive storage. SkyDrive can be used to save documents and files so they can be accessed from anywhere with an Internet connection. With SkyDrive, Microsoft Office Web Apps are also available. These allow you to open, edit, and share documents in your UW SkyDrive - great for working on group projects, so everyone you are working with can update and share changes in real time. For a good, helpful demo of the capabilities of Office Web Apps, please see the Office Web Apps web page (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us /web-apps). You need to log into Outlook Web Access and click SkyDrive in the header to get started.

Faster Response Times with More Support UW IT is using a new model to provide faculty and staff more responsive computer support. Rather than departments having just one IT consultant who can help them, a team of three consultants will now be available. The new model will help IT respond to your requests more quickly. It is always best to first call the Help Desk (766-HELP) since they are likely to be able to resolve your problem immediately. If the UWIT Help Desk can t resolve the problem over the phone or with their remote tools, they will dispatch your problem to your consultant support team. Training Schedule UW IT offers several computer workshops in Microsoft Office and Adobe software as well as topics such as Web Content Management System and Computer Security. Below is a list of the classes that will be offered soon. You can register on the Computer Workshop Schedule page (www.uwyo.edu/infotech/services/training /schedule.asp). September Computer Security Seminar Thursday, September 5th from 3:00-4:30 pm Excel 2010 Introduction Monday, September 9th and Wednesday, September 11th from 1:30-4:30 pm $40 Web Content Management System Level 1 Wednesday, September 11th from 9:00-11:00 am WyoLync Friday, September 13th from 8:30-10:00 am Access 2010 Introduction Tuesday, September 17th and Thursday, September 19th from 1:30-4:30 pm $40 UW Survey Tool Friday, September 20th from 9:00-10:30 am Word 2010 Tips and Tricks Wednesday, September 25th from 8:30-11:30 am $25 Classroom Technology There are a couple resources to help you become familiar with the technology in the rooms where you are teaching. UW IT and the Ellbogen Center for Teaching and Learning have paired up to provide a workshop for general campus classrooms before the start of each semester. If you were not able to attend the sessions this semester, you can contact Classroom Technology Support at 766-2872 for a personal demonstration. If you would like to be able to take printed instructions for your classrooms, you can find them on the Explore a Classroom (www.uwyo.edu/cts/info.asp?p=9311) web page. On this page you can find the specific room that you will be teaching in, the equipment in that room, and room specific instructions.

Computing Research Support Whether you are just curious if research computing could assist in your research or you are a high performance computing expert that needs to know how to get computer resource access, the Advanced Research Computing Center (ARCC) can help with your research needs. Visit the ARCC website for more information on services and resources. Connecting to UW Wireless? Use UWyo (not UWguest) The university has different wireless service levels. Faculty, staff and students should always use UWyo rather than UWguest. Instead of logging in each time, the UWyo connection can easily be configured to connect automatically when it is available (see the screenshots below). It does not timeout like UWguest access does. It allows you access to computing and networking resources behind the UW firewall, such as file shares and remote desktop. Most importantly it has a much faster connection speed than UWguest. Need Help with a Personal Computer? The IT Service Center is here to help with faculty and staff personal computers and mobile devices. Whether you need a virus removed from your computer, diagnostics run, help installing software, or a mobile device set up to connect to the wireless network and email, the IT Service Center is here to assist you. The Service Center is located in the Information Technology Center room 160, which is right by the computer lab. The Service Center is open 9:00 to 4:00. The Service Center does ask that you stay with your computer or mobile device while it is being worked on. This allows our Service Center staff to show you and explain what they are doing with your computer.

Need to Find Us? The Information Technology Center is located on Sorority Row right next to the Fine Arts Center. Software Mathematica UW IT has a site license with Mathematica that allows faculty, staff, and students to install it free of charge on their personal computers when used for class and research purposes.. Mathematica is also installed on all UW Student Lab computers. See our Mathmatica website for information on how to get Mathematica installed and for online learning and support options. Office 2013 Office 2013 is now supported by UW IT. All UW owned computers can use Office 2013 free of charge. It can be installed from the UW network using these instructions. If you would like Office 2013, or a Windows 7 or Windows 8 operating system, for a personal computer, it is also available to benefitted faculty and staff for a small charge through our Work at Home program. Windows XP Microsoft will soon no longer be releasing updates and security fixes for Windows XP nor distributing antivirus to XP computers. As a result IT has been moving UW computers using XP to Windows 7. Microsoft will end support of Windows XP effective April 2014. IT will not be able to support it after that time. Windows 7 is free for any UW owned computers. IT computer consultants are available to assist departments with this upgrade. If you have questions about how to move to Windows 7, please contact the IT Help Desk at 766-HELP (4357), option 1, or userhelp@uwyo.edu. Software Sales UW IT has campus agreements with both Adobe and Microsoft that allow us to sell to departments for far less than even the education discount through a retail vendor. See what software we have and place an order through our online ordering site. Both P-cards and IDRs are accepted.

Microsoft Updates On the third Tuesday of every month any available Microsoft Updates will be automatically distributed to computers across campus. You will know that there are updates to install on your computer when you see the update icon, below, at the bottom left corner of your screen. You can install the updates using these instructions (www.uwyo.edu/askit/5001/). If updates have not been installed by the second Tuesday of the following month your computer will automatically install them and may automatically restart. The next dates for the automatic installation of updates and possible restarts are listed below. Any open work could be lost if your computer automatically restarts. IT will no longer be sending out monthly reminders about these updates. September 10th October 8th November 12th If you have questions about Microsoft updates, please check the WSUS FAQ (www.uwyo.edu/askit/487/) or contact the IT Help Desk at 766-HELP.
