Date: January 18 Cooling Load Estimating One-day program designed to understand all aspects of heat generation and transfer required to design, select and install the proper AC system. Course focuses on large facilities as well as comparing the techniques to residential considerations. An extensive exercise promotes learning how to calculate a total cooling requirement. This course would be beneficial to engineers, technicians, maintenance personnel and designers. TRG-044 3.0 PEUs Pending Date: January 19 Understanding Water Treatment This one-day program is focused on water issues supporting the efficient operation of AC systems. This includes issues such as PH factors, piping, filtration, control, bacteria control and use, heat exchange, etc. The course is excellent for better understanding water cooled systems, and is beneficial to owners, service personnel, engineers, installation personnel and responsible water treatment personnel. TRG-051 3.0 PEUs Pending Date: February 7 IntelliPak Rooftops This course includes lecture on the construction of the entire unit along with the internals of the member components. Cooling cycle and troubleshooting the IntelliPak unit, a look at IntelliPak controls including STATITRAC, VFD, GBAS and VOM controls. A description and set-up of the Human Interface Panel is discussed including a review of the IntelliPak unit design. Voyager & Precedent Rooftops This one-day class is designed to acquaint attendees with Voyager and Precedent rooftop equipment. Voyager portion focuses on cooling only, cooling with electric heat, cooling with gas heat, CV units and VAV units. Topics discussed will be installation, operation including controls, electric heat and gas heat. Precedent topics include the basic unit, heating with electric and gas, cooling, available options, the next generation of micro controls and how to read and understand wiring diagrams. Date: April 3 & 4 Cost: $450 Series R Systems (2-day) This 2-day program was developed to provide attendees with the concept of the rotary compressor and the Series R machines. The course separates between the water-cooled and air-cooled models and covers installation, operation, maintenance, refrigerant issues and control of the machines. TRG-047 6.0 PEUs Pending Date: April 19 Compressor Diagnosing & Troubleshooting With this class, you will be able to recognize the various Trane compressors used and how they internally function and what the failed parts inside the compressor will tell you. The class discusses the four basic components along with how to tell one from the other and what their job is in a system. The state of the refrigerant as it travels from component to component is also discussed. System piping and other causes of compressor failures and their resulting problems are also discussed. Notice that accessing a refrigeration system requires an EPA certification certificate. The components are identified as the class goes from a basic stand-alone system to gradually more involved systems and finally the capabilities of total building automation systems. The various controllers are discussed along with their capabilities and uses. Who should attend? Owners and contractors who will come in contact with small free standing systems and those who operate them. Summit is touched on but not covered in individual depth. Summits are designed per individual job specs. TRG-048 3.0 Trade PEUs 3.0 Core PEUs 3.0 Core PEUs 3.0 Core PEUs Date: May 4 Time: 8:30 AM 5 PM Instructor: Elmer Franklin Refrigeration Fundamentals Overview & Update After an overview of a typical refrigeration cycle, there is a discussion on how various problems impact the operation and pressures in the refrigeration system. The changes to the trade resulting from EPA regulations are covered, including refrigerant phase-out and their typical replacements, service procedures to meet the new regulations, procedures for using the new refrigerants and oils, and the new machine room requirements. Typical service procedures are covered, including using the manifold gauges and T-P chart, leak detection, seasonal start-up, pumping the system down, refrigerant recovery, pressurizing the system, evacuation and adding refrigerant. Schematics Reading for HVAC This course promotes the concept of troubleshooting and repair of systems using schematics and wiring diagrams. With a focus on troubleshooting techniques and the concept of internal isolation, attendees participate in the recognition of components and circuits including diodes, capacitors, transformers, relays and more. The latest in ANSI diagrams is discussed, which includes understanding ladders, logic, keys and legends. Circuit board technology in troubleshooting the system will also be discussed. The course has 3 lab exercises covering using a schematic to identify faulty components, converting a line diagram to a schematic and making a schematic by tracing the system wires. Attendees discuss each topic using a systems approach to fully understand the selection of certain types of equipment and installation issues. This approach also allows the attendee to appreciate the responsibilities involved in environmental satisfaction in any type of building or facility. Date: Sept 25 Time: 8:30 AM 5 PM Instructor: Elmer Franklin Electrical Troubleshooting for HVAC After an overview of electric terminology, the attendee will learn the operation of various electrical devices used in HVAC systems, and the procedures for troubleshooting them. It incorporates principles of relays and other switching mechanisms and covers the basic principles of reading schematic wiring diagrams. The attendee will become familiar with HVAC electrical devices and circuits and will be able to use this knowledge to troubleshoot electrical controls and electrical systems in order to repair them. This course has one lab exercise and several in which the instructor demonstrates troubles on commercial air conditioner/furnace system components and the students work in groups of 2 using a schematic to identify faulty electrical components. The course breaks the chiller into sections, with complete understanding of each component. The course covers chiller operation; to include lift, approach, temperature & pressure relationships, heat exchange mediums, cooling demand, controls and adjustments. The course involves detailed understanding of chiller logs and identification of problems. It also covers preventative maintenance and inspections required to monitor and maintain system efficiency and safety, such as water treatment, cooling towers, refrigerants and mechanical room design. Attendees will also gain an important insight into ASHRAE standards and the environmental issues used by decision makers in focusing on replacement or retrofit concerns. This 3-part course includes: book home study, classroom lecture/overview and exam. The class is designed to prepare technicians, service and facility operation personnel and anyone who handles refrigerant to complete the EPA Refrigerant Certification exam. Participants can be certified in Type I Small Appliance; Type II High Pressure and Very High Pressure; Type III Low Pressure or Type IV Universal (Type I, Type II and Type III). The course covers ozone depletion, EPA regulations, safe handling and transportation, refrigerant recovery, recycling and reclamation. A certification exam is given at the completion of the course. Date: December 4 & 5 Cost: $450 Air Conditioning Clinic This 2-day course is designed to present the basic principles of HVAC in multiple areas. The course covers the basic refrigeration cycle, the principles of heat generation, transfer, and rejection.
