In accordance with the recommendations from the American Council on Education (ACE), Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services, credit for military experience is granted in compliance with EO 036, Section.. and SP 0-08. Every effort will be made to award credit for specific university coursework as opposed to elective credit. CI will award semester credit as follows: a. Credit for military training courses will be awarded as follows: i. Military Basic Training. Marine Corps students will receive 8 units; 3 units fulfilling General Education (GE) Area E and 5 units free electives.. All other branches will receive 4 units; 3 units fulfilling GE Area E and unit free elective. ii. All other courses will be awarded credit based on ACE recommendations as illustrated in Exhibit A. Units will count as free electives. b. Credit for an occupation will be awarded free elective credit based on ACE recommendations as illustrated in Exhibit B. The ACE National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training contains ACE credit recommendations for formal courses or examinations offered by various organizations, from businesses and unions to the government and military. c. Credit for Defense Institute Foreign Center (DLIFLC) courses will be awarded according to the ACE National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training as illustrated in Exhibit C. A minimum of 3 semester units will be applied for GE Area C3a fulfilling the University language requirement. Any remaining units will count as free electives. The DLIFLC provides foreign language training for U.S. military personnel requiring a language to perform their job and is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. d. Except as outlined above, formal approval is required for other GE Area and/or major course credit. Appropriate forms are available at http://www.csuci.edu/students/rec_reg_library.htm. No more than 30 semester units of combined externally developed test credit (of which military credit is included) will be applied to the baccalaureate degree. Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate and basic military training are excluded from this limit. Credit is granted for baccalaureate/associate degree level courses only. Graduate level work will be assessed by Graduate Programs. No credit will be granted for vocational level courses. 3. To receive credit, submit a request to the Records and Registration office along with a copy of your DD 4, DD 95, or other official documents such as the Army/ACE Registry Transcript System (AARTS), Sailor/Marine/ACE Registry Transcript (SMART), Community College of the Air Force, or United States Coast Guard transcript. Exhibit B Occupation Credit If a formal transcript (SMART, AARTS, etc) is not available, credit for an occupation indicated on the DD 4 and/or DD 95 may be found by searching at the following web location: http://www.militaryguides.acenet.edu/. The example below demonstrates how to determine correct CI baccalaureate level credit. Exhibit C Defense Proficiency Test Credit Students will receive the following credit based on the recommendations of the ACE National Guide to College Credit for Workforce Training at http://www.acenet.edu/credit/?fuseaction=browse.getorganizationdetail&fice=9063. The following examples demonstrate how to determine correct CI baccalaureate level credit. Transcripts may be sent to the Records & Registration office by ordering them directly from DLIFLC: http://www.dliflc.edu/dlitranscripts.html. Example : Defense Proficiency Test Credit The DLPT 5 Spanish test is completed with a score of 4 (DLI-0070) The student will be awarded 4 lower division (LD) units General Education (GE) C3a plus 7 upper division (UD) units as free electives. Example : Defense Proficiency Test Credit Two tests (same language) are combined to fulfill the required minimum of 3 units LD GE Area C3a. DLPT IV (Test period: Apr 0 to pres.) Italian test with a score of or (DLI-06) = LD unit GE C3a DLPT IV (Test period: Apr 0 to pres.) Italian test with a score of or (DLI-0) = LD units GE C3a Note: As of 4--0, test scores were converted to a single digit. Example 3: Defense Proficiency Test Credit Two tests (can be different languages) are completed, however, only one is needed to fulfill all 3 units of GE Area C3a. All units for the second test will be awarded as additional free electives. DLPT 5 Spanish test with a score of (DLI-0058) = 4 LD units GE C3a + DLPT 5 Spanish test with a score of (DLI-0059) = 4 LD units GE C3a + Credit earned for both tests = 4 units LD C3a + 4 LD free electives + 8 UD free electives for a total of 6 units.
