1 Military Credit Transfer Policies at Indiana Institutions As of July 10, 2013, 16 institutions out of 16 (including Ivy Tech Community College and Vincennes University), or 100%, responded to the request for policies on the evaluation of military credit. The top three most common elements were: 10 July 2013 Appel, Sara Institutions request one or more of the following: Joint Services Transcript (JST), Community College of the Air Force transcript (CCAF), a Coast Guard Institute (CGI) transcript, a DD214 or DD295 form. 1 The American Council on Education s (ACE) credit recommendations is consulted when evaluating transcripts to award credit. Most credits that are awarded are done so as undistributed credit. 10 or 63% of institutions request a Joint Services Transcript 2, Community College of the Air Force, and/or Coast Guard Institute transcript. Whereas the DD295 is used by the military to evaluate an active duty service member s learning experience. 2 The Joint Services Transcript (JST) is a transcript that incorporates the Army/American Council on Education Registry Transcript System (AARTS) and the Sailor/Marine American Council on Education Registry Transcript (SMART) transcripts into one. Due to HEA 1116, institutions need to have a policy specific towards military credit; label it appropriately. 2. Due to dates on some of the submitted polices, campuses should review their policy on awarding military credit to ensure that it has recently been evaluated. 3. In light of HEA 1116, institutions need to mention if they use ACE Credit Recommendations. 4. With the new JST, references to AARTS and SMARTS need to be updated. 5. Documents that service members need to have submitted in order for the institution to evaluate their potential credit, need to be specified (i.e. JST, DD214, etc.) 6. Policies should specify if the credit will be distributed, undistributed, or elective. 7. Include the maximum number of credits possible. If there is no maximum, have a note as to how this may help and hinder the student s progress (i.e. IUPUI s memo). Page 8 of 8
